OK. With all the talk about the Oscar winners and the cliched state of current Hollywood offerings, what stories would you like to see brought to the screen? And would they be 2 or 3 hours long? Major motion picture or TV miniseries?

My picks:
Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (In the works)
Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card (It's in the works)
Sword of Shannara or Running with the Demons by Terry Brooks
Heir to the Empire Trilogy by Timothy Zahn

Late one night at the insane asylum one inmate shouted: I am Napoleon! Another one said: How do you know? The first inmate said: God told me! A voice from another room shouted: I did NOT!

Here's a few.

I Am Legend

"Based on a novel by Richard Matheson (as were Vincent Price's The Last Man On Earth and the 1971 Charlton Heston film The Omega Man), I Am Legend casts Arnold Schwarzenegger as the last man on Earth to avoid a killer plague. Action erupts when the sun goes down and clans of zombie vampires go on the rampage through the streets of a post-apocalyptic Los Angeles ravaged by the virus. Director Rob Bowman's film will focus more on the internal struggle of being the last man on Earth than the previous adaptations of the story did. "

Crichton's Timeline

"The film tells the story of three archaeology students who must use a time machine to go back to 14th century France to rescue their professor who was trapped there during a first-hand study session. "

I read Timeline. It has too many plotholes to count and continually contradicted itself. It's a shame to see another writer destroyed by Hollywood success.

How about:
Ann Rice's The Mummy: Ramsese the Damned
The Guns of the South by Harry Turtledove
Batman: The Dark Knight Returns by Frank Miller

i would love to see DragonLance Chronicles become a major motion picture series like the Lord of the Rings is being made into. Three 2 1/2 - 3 hours epic movies surrounding a group of unlikely heroes who save the planet...

Previously adopted by Joey Big Arms.

Rommel, read "Guns of the South" by Harry Turtledove. It's an alternate history novel about the Confederacy getting a little help from the future in the way of an unlimited supply of AK-47's and ammunition. Turtledove is a historian who really knows how to create the personalities of the historical figures. Very good story.

Thanks man. And may I suggest The Eight, by Katherine Neville. synopsis fr. Amazon

"Katherine Neville's debut novel is a postmodern thriller set in 1972 ... and 1790. In the 20th century, Catherine Velis is a computer expert with a flair for music, painting, and chess who, on her way to Algeria at the behest of the accounting firm where she is employed, is invited to take a mysterious moonlighting assignment: recover the pieces of an old chess set missing for centuries.
In the midst of the French Revolution, a young novice discovers that her abbey is the hiding place of a chess set, once owned by the great Charlemagne, which allows those who play it to tap into incredible powers beyond the imagination. She eventually comes into contact with the major historical figures of the day, from Robespierre to Napoleon, each of whom has an agenda.

The Eight is a non-stop ride that recalls the swashbuckling adventures of Indiana Jones as well as the historical puzzles of Umberto Eco which, since its first publication in 1988, has gone on to acquire a substantial cult following."

Neuromancer - William Gibson

quote:

Synopsis
The book centers on Case, a former computer hacker who makes his living by breaking into security systems. Caught stealing from his employers, Case is rendered physically unable to withstand the rigors of access to the worldwide computer net. Unable to work, he welcomes suicidal thoughts, entering into deals that can only go bad. Willing to do anything for the chance to work again, he turns to a mysterious figure named Armitage, and by so doing begins a journey out of the gutters of 21st century Tokyo and into an ever-expanding world of multinational intrigue. Armitage pays off Case's debts, repairs his neural damage, and places him under the protection of Molly, a professional killer. As Case progresses through his assignments with Molly and a range of others enlisted by Armitage, he becomes aware of larger forces working to control his activities. Ultimately, Case realizes that it is Neuromancer, a far-reaching artificial intelligence, that he has been working for. The opus ends with Case's realization that he has been controlled by the very technology he uses.

For those that don't know, this book was first published in 1984.

But I'll settle for Matrix2 next year. :)

Kid, poeple have been trying to make Neuromancer for 16 years!! Nobody has yet come up with a way to do it that doesn't end up like Lawnmower Man or Johnny Neumonic (based on a Gibson story).

Rommel, I'll check it out. Thanks.

Snow Crash by Neil Stephenson
(Neuromancer has become a bit dated, but Snow Crash still rules in timeliness. Stepherson's last book Cryptonomicon also rocked...breaking through as a bestseller)

The Poet by Michael Connelley
(a great serial killer thriller...that may be the next best thing besides Silence of the Lambs)

Dragonlance series by Margret Weis & Tracy Hickman
(deifnately has some possibilities...but will never be done because Wizards of the Coast couldn't handle it...look at the mess they made with Dungeons and Dragons)

Tigana by Guy Gavriel Kay
(a fantasy book one-shot that has everything...revenge, revolution, sorcery and etc. Much more workable as a movie b/c it is a single book.)

Focault's Pendulum by Umbreto Eco
(a tough read by the author of In The Name of the Rose, but a very disturbing look at our fear of what we don't understand.)

The Gold Coast by Nelson DeMille
(great story about Long Island's last vestige of decadence - where in the area of the very rich, moves in a Mafiaso husband and wife)

Marshal Law
(A graphic novel that dealt with a superhero-laden society bent on genetics, where the main hero is a superhero-stopper, who stops them when they get out-of-control. It pulls no punches skewering the idealism of the typical comic books with a hard reality and a great storyline)

Hyperion by Dan Simmons
(Mindblowing Sci-Fi/Horror - Hyperion is the tale of seven people who make a pilgrimmage to a terrifying creature called the Shrike in an attempt to save mankind. One of the best Sci-Fi series I have ever read...on par with Dune)

Well, the Lord of the Rings is already in the
works. I can't wait for that!

I'd like to see a follow-up to Dune. Maybe a
movie about the Asimov Foundation series
would be cool too, but very difficult to pull off.

I'd also like to see some genuine
documentaries made about Greg Noll and
Jerry Lopez. They are 2 very pioneering and
influential surfers.

Good news for you Box.
Because of the success of its mini-series, Sci-Fi channel plans to make a mini-series out of the second book in the Dune series.

Arthur Dent,

Thanks, I hadn't heard about that. Do you
know when it comes out? I missed the Dune
mini series. Do you know if the mini series
will be released on video or DVD?

Gooch, how can you insult the originator of Cyberpunk? I couldn't even get into Snow Crash, but I could hardly put down Neuromancer. William Gibson is a brilliant writer, I don't even like to read that much but I've read three of his books.

I have to throw in another vote for Dragonlance Chronicles. But sadly I think Gooch is right, it will never happen.

I'd also be happy to see On A Pale Horse by Piers Anthony, although it is part of a series, it stands on its own quite well.

Say hello to my little friend(s)!

I want to see an adequate movie done about the rise and fall of Al Capone or Tammany Hall.

As for Tomcats, I am going to say it has potential.

I preferred Snow Crash to Neuromancer, too. Considering Gibson had never been in the same room as a computer when he originally wrote it, it may need some minor tweaks, but both movies are in preproduction.

I'm currently reading Stephenson's "The Big U." His first book, which was out of print for 10 years. Pretty good, but nowhere near as cool as Snow Crash.

You listen to me! While I will admit to a certain cynicism, the fact is I am a nay-sayer and a hatchet man in the fight against violence! I pride myself in taking a punch and I'll gladly take another because I choose to live my life in the company of Gandhi and King! My concerns are global. I reject absolutely revenge, aggression, and retaliation. The foundation of such a method...is love. I love you, Sheriff Truman.

I would love to see:

Alas Babylon, by Pat Frank
The US versus Russia fighting it out in a nuclear war. End of the world? Maybe.

The Metamorphasis, by Franz Kafka
A young man wakes up and realizes that he is a roach. How will this affect the way he sees the world/the world sees him?

Farenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury
Similar to 1984...but more about censorship.

Those are just a few off the top of my head.

Farenheit 451 was done already in the late 60s, not great, but well worth watching if you can find it. A remake would rock, except Hollywood can't be bothered to make a meaningful film for the two of us to enjoy(lol).

Best line in the book/movie-"Firemen used to put out fires..."

And a Kafka movie? I'd rather see "The Trial," but again, I don't think Hollywood has the guts to do it. An indie? Sure, I think every film student does a treatment for The Metamorphisis - a theme with true visual appeal. But would it play in Podunk?

I wonder if anyone at one of the cutting edge studios reads this board?

They never made a Metamorphisis movie but made Two, TWO Trial movies.

The first was in 1960 director by Orson Welles and starring Anthony Hopkins. Not as good as the novel (which is my personal favorite of all time along with 1984) but still a great movie with excellent surreal dark humor. Though it's on video it wasn't until I saw a restoration of it in a theater that I realized how good it actually was.

The second Trial flick was in 1993 with Kyle McLachlan (Twin Peaks's Dale Cooper) which I never had a chance to see.

If you liked 1984 I totally suggest seeing Terry Gilliam's 1985 Tribute BRAZIL, one of the best movies of all time.

As for Fahrenheit 451 good news. They are trying to make it with Frank Darbont directing and Ralph Fiennes starring read her
