I second that!
Also, if you're big on special features, look into discs that are labelled Criterion Edition - theyr'e usually loaded with behind the scenes stuff, documentaries, etc. I just got a copy of The Rock, and its loaded with good stuff.

Porn aside, these are definite DVD-worthy movies:

1- The Matrix
2- Gladiator
3- American Pie [Unrated version]
4- The Cell
5- The Mummy
6- Pitch Black
7- X-Men
Obviously this list is only recent films that (except for American Pie) are heavy on visuals that just look better on DVD as opposed to videotape. There are older movies that you should get on DVD simply because they include previously deleted scenes or commentary on how scenes were filmed (example: The Exorcist anniversary DVD).

And hell, I almost forgot: if you're a fan of anime, get those on DVD, too.

Actually, AFP, your own namesake American Psycho on DVD includes scenes not seen in the theater... Hopefully the DVD version is as all-out nasty as the book was...

Brain, I have seen the uncut version, and it sucked. They hyped it and it only has a few additional sex scenes. It was no where near the book. But the movie itself kicks ass so it's worth it.

All this DVD talk, I think I'll stop on the way home and buy a few today.

If you're thinking of buying DVD's think of what would look good wide-screen. You know, that letterbox thing with the bars on top and bottom of the screen that everyone hates. Most DVD's offer that, and it really makes some movies better to watch.

Absolutely! What are you waiting for? You can even take advantage of the situation and get the "Special Edition" of Star Wars with about 30 seconds of extra CGs that Lucas threw in 20 years too friggin' late.

Anime DVD's are always good. They offer English and Japanese voice tracks, which is good for either type of fan. I would reccomend the DVD set of either Neon Genesis Evangelion, or Rurouni Kenshin.

when i bought my dvd the first movie i got was scarface with pacino. For the time it was a great DVD very up to date lots of special features and the movie itself looks a 100 times better.

Some others that are worth it are

T2:Judgement Day - Defines what a dvd should be.
Se7en the collectors edition.
2001: A space oddisey
Dr Strangelove
Men In Black
Blade

The godfather trilogy has not yet been released but thanks to DB for the info it will be coming out later this year. The star wars trilogy i have no clue when it will be out.

But it all depends on your tastes in movies. Some ofocurse you make mistakes on and wish you didn't buy. Some may have little or no extras but it is just worth it for the movie alone like:

Usual Suspects and pulp fiction.

Recently i been getting some good flicks at the bargain bin at the Wiz.

I picked up King of new york and deep cover for 11 bucks a piece and i got bad boys with sean penn for 7 bucks.

12 Monkeys (one of the best making of featurettes I've seen)
The Oliver Stone Collection
American History X
GO
Immortal Beloved
Braveheart

I don't have it but the Men In Black Collector's edition is supposed to have some great interavtive extras

They also have Dragon's Lair and Space Ace on DVD, they are exactly the same as the old Arcade Upright except you play with your remote.

And to second someone else Fight Club is a must have and Seven is great as well

fight club definetly, i watched the movie atleast 15 times before i got the DVD and then i watched it 10 more times. Same thing with se7en.

Immortal Beloved

I love immortal beloved but i have it on VHS I can imagine the sound on the DVD is better but besides that was it worth it?

I know Amadeus was a great buy for the music score isolation alone works best with the 'Don Giovani' scene.

saw that movie when I was like 8. All I remember is the convict who picks his nose, puts it on his peas, and then eats it. It's weird what sticks in your mind as a child....

On Immortal the sound alone is worth it and the scene at the end when he is laying in the water among the stars is crystal clear and beautiful.

Since I got the DVD Player I won't watch any thing except taped TV on VHS, I have pretty much replaced all my VHS favs on DVD, most of the extras you watch once and never again, it is the picture and sound quality that makes DVD so superior.

And to add to the list the Toy Story 3 disc set is great as well, they made outtakes that are pretty damn funny.

And when I think of Bad Boys it is soda cans in a pillow case that comes to mind. Other good cheap DVD's I found were New Jack City and Suicide Kings.

If you're gonna get Pulp Fiction, you have to import the Canadian version for the extras.

Godfather and SW aren't on DVD yet, the Alien movies are direct copies from the laserdiscs.
