| Hanger-On Registered: Jan. 70 | AM, may I ask what is your fascination with Unix-based operating systems? I know all about open source and all that good shit, but what are the real tangible benefits of it. I have yet to see a major software come out for use on a Linux. Or, Linux-compatible hardware for that matter. By the way, you ever hear of Object Desktop for Windows?

| O&A Board Regular Registered: Jan. 01 | Linux(and most Unix based OSes) generally accept more coming at them at once. For example I could run as many as 16 virtual desktops on my computer without any problem. I could have countless browsers windows, terminals, etc. open. Linux and FreeBSD both allow for the running of a proxy, ftp, and a file server simultaneously on the same machine. I like the constant upgradability. The free nature of almost all the software. Sure Windows may have more progs but Linux has a program that is just as good if not better on too usually and if not it usually is embedded into the operating system. And if it isn't available you can emulate it on Linux and run it better than Windows can. BSD can run most Linux programs so they have pretty much the same library. Oh and I have heard of Object Desktop. It's pretty good. | Psychopath Registered: Jan. 01 | OK, a few thing have happened since my last post. Here we go. As for loading linux without a cd or floppy. That would require downloading the ISO files (cd-rom images) to a machine on the network and you can do it from there. I am not positive of the exact instructions as I have only seen it done and not done it. I believe that places like Red Hat have the instructions on their site for this. You asked about fascinations with Linux. It is a lot more then it just being free and the open source project or the GNU liscensing. It is more a matter of functionality. The newer linux versions, especially those running the 2.4 kernel are much more stable then windows. They do not need to be rebooted as often. I have talked to people that have Apache web servers and UNIX or Linux servers that have not needed a reboot in a year. I have not met anyone that can say that about Windows. The other part is that you can run more. The big joke is a widows user can playing quake and using ICQ on my windows machine at the same time. The linux user can play quake, run ICQ, act as a web and ftp server, while updating the system. It is a more efficient OS and it does good software based firewalling. Also, you can run WINE. It an emulator style program that allows you to run windows programs. The latest benchmarks show windows programs running 10-15% faster under wine then windows. An emulater is running faster then the OS. I will grant you though that it is still a techie's OS and not ready for the mainstream. FreeBSD is a version of linux developed at Berkely I believe. | Hanger-On Registered: Jan. 70 | I think the typical response to your arguments would be that windows is hella-stable too, if you don't put a bunch of shit programs on it. as far as multi-tasking, I regularly run multiple applications on multiple monitors. I'm not going to try and win the big debate. if there was more software available for linux, I would probably use it. but I know what a whore it was for a fellow employee to install redhat on a machine here at my job. it took him 3 days, and it still doesn't work right. I'll take "plug n pray" over that anyday. Object Desktop kicks some serious windows ass. I can't believe how customizable it is. It was pretty buggy when I first installed it, but now it's running consistently well. I'm using DesktopX and WindowBlinds along with IconPackager. Some of the skins that are out there are just sick!

| O&A Board Regular Registered: Jan. 01 | Actually FreeBSD is not developed from Linux. It came from a team of programmers who wanted to update 386BSD but ended up doing an entirely new OS altogther. It is compaitable with Linux but is not necesarily coming from it. EDIT-The original BSD was developed at Berekely University in the 70s. It became the main competitor to the Bell Labs version. It still lives on in Apple OSX, FreeBSD, and other OSes. | O&A Board Regular Registered: Jan. 01 | Kid I installed Mandrake Linux in about 30 minutes(including the 4 cd's of software it had to install). If you want real hell installing Linux try Debian. It was pretty simple and that was when I knew absolutely nothing of Linux. As for software I don't see myself missing Windows software much instead of the games and that will be fixed in 2 possible ways. As for your saying Windows is stable unless you don't knock it too much then it defeats the whole purpose of tinkering around with different programs. | Psychopath Registered: Jan. 01 | I installed Red Hat 7.1 in about 45 minutes. 3 days what were they doing? It took 50 min. on my laptop. All dell, IBM, HP, and 3 other companies I can't remember are all 100% compatible now. Sorry about the NSD thing. I know that it isn't from Linux. What's worse is BSD was developed in part through a competition. The school that came up with the best new OS got some funding. My friends team came in second to the BSD folks. Need sleep, haven't really in about 2 weeks now. Oh, Red Hat, I have installed it on a dell desktop, 4 laptops, quantex, quantex laptop, IBM netfinity, and a compaq with no problems or needs for downloads. I don't know exactly what problems he had, but he spent a lot of time on the phone. I've been tempted to install Linux on one of my machines, but I guess I'm just not up for the challenge right now. If you willing to spend a little $$ go with the SMC Barricade, 4 ports, built in print server. I think I posted that earlier, oh well. You could also go with something like BlackIce defender for the firewall. Whatever you use make sure it is set to drop packets, not deny them. By denying it tells the outside world you are there and sometimes they can tell what program you are using. By dropping your machine just doesn't respond. | O&A Board Regular Registered: Feb. 01 | I have a set of discs for solaris 2.8 (I think, the new one) for the X86 platform (standard PC) but the laptop I want to put it on, can not boot from the CD, and I dont know how to install it. I downloaded red hat, to put it on there, but I havent done it yet. I am not very good with unix/linux. Does anyone know some sites that have good detailed instructions on how to install? Most sites I have seen just expect you to be an expert, or at least know something about unix. I am great with windows, but unix, I know 2 commands, and thats it. | ||||

| Hanger-On Registered: Jan. 70 | onehung, recently I picked up a PIII 1GHz processor for $230 at a computer show. I don't know how much cyrix processors are going for but, I've never been disappointed by pentiums. Although, I hear that AMD processors are also good and they are cheaper than pentiums. My suggestion would be to upgrade your motherboard, processor and RAM. The bus speed of newer processors is faster than your current machine, so they will probably be incompatible.

I've seen problems with AMD chips (especially running 3D games) but that was with K6-2's.... I haven't heard whether Athlons have the same problem or not. I've been sticking with Intel myself. | O&A Board Regular Registered: Jan. 01 | Athlons are amazing performers. In some cases they work better than Intels. You could get a 1.4 Ghz Athlon for $160 and a motherboard for $100 or so. Definitely go for the Athlon it has the same performance as an Pentium and is a lot cheaper. I quarantined it and deleted it, but I still can use that folder in OL to delete junk mail, it says that the folder cannot be displayed due to low memory or low storage space...Any help here?????????
