Mayor Giuliani launched his new ban on booze at street festivals yesterday - using his power to put the rule into effect immediately, instead of waiting the normal 30 days. "The ban's official as of today," declared Rosemarie O'Keefe, commissioner of the mayor's Community Assistance Unit. "The kickoff for street fairs is really May, and I didn't want someone to say, ‘You let them [sell beer and wine] and not me.'" At least one group was caught off-guard by the sudden ban. The head of Brooklyn's Gowanus Canal Local Development Corp. said she had to call three restaurants and bars yesterday to tell them they can't sell beer at the group's Sunday street fair. "We were a bit upset. We were under the impression we had a month," said the corporation's executive director, Jean DiLascio. Some festival organizers are deciding whether to sue the city over the rule, which forbids the sale of booze at events that require a street-closing permit. "We're considering it. The ban is going to hurt us financially," said Carl Blumenthal, executive director of the Atlantic Avenue Local Development Corp., which makes about $3,000 from beer sales at its massive Atlantic Antic fair. News of the ban came as organizers of the Puerto Rican Day Parade vowed that there won't be a repeat of the wild Central Park sex-assault spree that marred last year's event. Working with the NYPD, which has developed a massive plan designed to protect women, organizers are beefing up security, said the parade's chairwoman, Maria Roman. "What happened in Central Park last year was an isolated incident, and we are taking all the necessary steps to make sure it doesn't happen this year," Roman said in announcing the June 10 celebration, held between 44th and 86th streets along Fifth Avenue. "We will have more of our own security at the parade, and cops have assured us that they will have more officers deployed." Last year, mobs of young men gathered around women in the park after the parade, dousing them with water, tearing their clothes and, in some cases, groping and sexually abusing them. When the melee erupted, officers refused to leave their assigned areas and rebuffed victims' pleas for help. Roman's announcement came two days after a Bronx man was sentenced to a maximum of four years in jail for participating in the sex assaults. | ||||

Because of a couple of drunken low life scumbags, they had to ruin every other street festival in New York. Sepiroth, what about the San Gennaro festival coming up in a couple of months. That is always big with the alcohol. | ||||
