First a couple of links so everyone can know what I'm talking about.
A link to online copies of all the stories: Visit this Website
A link to some great quotes from his works: Visit this Website

So, why is HHGTTG so important to me? Well, for a long time growing up, I took life WAY to seriously. Everything was very important and nothing was funny. I couldn't stand sitcoms and all the stupid people in comedy movies. They just didn't make me laugh.

Then a friend in school told me to read HHGTTG. That book taught me to laugh at even the most serious situations and to take life more easily. It opened the door to a much more enjoyable life.

So, Douglas Adams will be sorely missed. I can just hope that the movie version of HHGTTG will now be made in his honor so everyone can understand what was so special about his work.

quote:

"`You ARE Zaphod Beeblebrox?'
`Yeah,' said Zaphod, `but don't shout it out or they'll all want one.'
`THE Zaphod Beeblebrox?'
`No, just A Zaphod Bebblebrox, didn't you hear I come in six packs?'
`But sir,' it squealed, `I just heard on the sub-ether radio report. It said you were dead...'
`Yeah, that's right, I just haven't stopped moving yet.'"

-- Zaphod and the Guide's receptionist.

quote:

"There was a point to this story, but it has temporarily escaped thechronicler's mind."

quote:

"There are of course many problems connected with life, of which some ofthe most popular are `Why are people born?' `Why do they die?' `Why do they spend so much of the intervening time wearing digital watches?'"

-- The Book.

I think I got one of the most valueble pieces of advise from Adams. It is the phrase on the cover of the book, written in big friendly letters:
Don't Panic

Yeah Dick, I know. That's why I didn't do this on Monday. But so many people have been posting "Why didn't Dent do this?" "I expected Dent to say that." That I felt this thread was needed.

Thanks, Dent, for that nice tribute to one of the finest writers of our time. Once again, Douglas Adams' humor and style will be sorely missed. I'm with you, I hope they can make a film version of his works that lives up to the high standards he placed on himself.

I can appreciate your appreciation for Douglas Adams but I never really understood it. The humor always seemed so forced and not really very funny to me. That being said, the guy was a great influence on a great number of people and thats what matters.

i didnt' want to start a new thread but for you HH fans the 'final' book is going to be published next year. which is weird considering the ending of the previous final one but you know, anything can happen. Douglas Adams' Final 'Hitch Hiker's Guide' Found
LONDON (Reuters) - The final unfinished novel by cult British author Douglas Adams is to be published next year on the anniversary of his death, his agent says.

``A Salmon of a Doubt,'' the final and sixth part of his classic ``The ``Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy,'' has been edited from files found on Adams's computer after he died suddenly in May, Ed Victor told the Sunday Telegraph.

``We have pored over Douglas's hard drive. There were so many different versions of the novel. He would take it and then revise it repeatedly so there were many files,'' said Victor.

``As soon as he wrote anything he would say, 'Oh God, that's terrible'. He was a very, very self-critical author,'' he added.

Adams died from a heart attack at his California home aged 49.

His ``Hitch Hiker's Guide,'' about a group of galactic travelers who survive the demolition of Earth to build a space bypass, began life as a 1978 BBC Radio series.

It was turned into a best-selling novel, a TV series, record album, computer game and adapted for stage. It made Adams a household name on both sides of the Atlantic.

``A Salmon of a Doubt'' will be published next May in a compendium of Adam's final works, including a film screenplay for the Hitch Hiker's Guide, Victor said.

Sunday November 18- CBS: Max BIckford, In Love and War...NBC: Link, L&O: CI, UC...FOX: 7:30- King of the Hill, Simpsons, Malcolm, X-fils...ABC: 7-9: Facts of Life Reunion, Alias, Practice...UPN: Buffy S3, Practice S1,

Hmmm, as much as I hate to say it, I think they should leave the story untold. The person Ed Victor who the article quotes from said that Adams was "a very, very self-critical author". So would Adams really have wanted someone else to try and complete his book for him? And would they even be able (or would they even bother trying) to do it right, or would it just be an attempt to shill out an unfinished work for a few more dollars (or pounds) from his fans?

Did any of you guys ever see the BBC Hitchhiker's TV series?

That was some whacked stuff - big time Douglas Adams meets cheesy Dr. Who like special effects. Pretty funny seeing how AWFUL Zaphod's second head looked!

Come on Spork, you gotta love those zany British special effects. Just one step above "Lost in Space".

I thought that was the point, bad effects, campy acting...what more could you want?

If Adams was so self-critical, how do you justify So Long And Thanks For All The Fish? It was god awful...

Funny how Brain and I still have the same old sigs...have we reached perfection or are we just lazy?

Douglas Adams = the Tupac Shakur of the literary world?

I don't know about this. First, they should probably just let it rest. This isn't like Frank Herbert's son taking on Dune. This is someone grabbing a bunch of pieces and slapping them together into a story just to sell books.

What I would find interesting is if they released ALL of the material they found and turned it into a "Hitchhiker's Guide to Writing a Book" type deal. Something to give to inspiring writers or use as a guide in a college writing class.
