This might be shocking to some of you but youknow those ads where they have "average" people talking about how great a movie is? Well...it turns out that the SONY (inventor of David Manning) had two SONY executives in the Man on the Street Ads for "The Patriot" reviews. Ah...Hot Shots Part Deux Had it right

The article was longer than I expected so I'm just posting the link Here

Sony workers were faux fans in "Patriot" ad
Reuters

HOLLYWOOD (Variety) -

Columbia Pictures has now invented its own fans.

In nationally televised spots for Columbia's 2000 summer movie "The Patriot," a montage of man-on-the-street interviews ... two of these "folks" were employees of Sony Pictures Entertainment.

Both employees, Tamaya Petteway and Anthony Jefferson, still work in Columbia's worldwide marketing department.

Petteway looks into the camera and assures viewers the movie is a "perfect date movie!" as her ostensible date, Jefferson, silently looks on with a faint smile.

Movie marketing insiders at other studios say it's highly unusual for a studio to use its own employees for these spots.

Columbia's Precious disagreed. In a statement defending the "Patriot" ads, she said, "Using actors, real people or employees as spokespeople is not unique to the entertainment business, is not specific to Sony Pictures Entertainment and is not something that is praticed only by me.

Indeed, at least one entertainment marketing executive who runs his own firm said the use of actors or studio employees for advertising testimonials has become an "industry-wide practice."

Charges of false and misleading advertising fall under the purview of the Federal Trade Commission. Capitol Hill, which has been sensitive to Hollywood marketing recently, could look into the practice as well.

Even if the reviewer is real you can't trust it- it's legal to take one or two words, in or out of context, and use it as a promo. I could say the Patriot was a huge waste of time and money, and they can print the Patriot is huge to promote the movie. Plus, who is to say the "man on the street" isn't a complete ass who I have nothing in common with! My method is if the story line is too accessable in the promo (you've seen the promo, you've seen the movie) then chances are the movie sucks. I do like the reviewer from Vouge and NPR- he's usually right on- he sorts the good from the shite without getting snobby.

Didn't want to create a new thread but SONY is being sued for The Animal

Sony Sued Over 'The Animal'
The Associated Press
Jun 15 2001 10:05AM

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) - Two parents have sued Sony Pictures, claiming the studio falsely marketed its comedy ``The Animal'' to youths.
James and Ana Morris claim Sony failed to warn moviegoers adequately of scenes involving human and animal sexual acts that are inappropriate for children to see.

The couple filed the lawsuit Thursday in Palm Beach County Circuit Court. It seeks $15,000 to $75,000 in compensatory and punitive damages.

The parents said they took their twin 13-year-old sons and 10-year-old daughter to see the movie on June 3.

James Morris said the movie, starring Rob Schneider as a man who receives transplanted animal organs, should have been rated R instead of PG-13.

``I expected perhaps language,'' said Morris, of Loxahatchee. ``I certainly didn't expect to have thrown at us references and innuendoes to bestiality.

``We continue to stretch the bounds of what our kids can absorb,'' he said.

Sony spokesman Steve Hagey declined comment on the lawsuit.

The lawsuit also claims Sony deceived moviegoers with an ad containing praise from a phony film critic.

The ad quotes nonexistent film critic David Manning as saying ``The producing team of `Big Daddy' has delivered another winner!''

Sony has expressed regret over the deception and suspended two executives last week for 30 days without pay.

Christ, they must be the most annoying, uptight parents in the world.
