LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Actor Carroll O'Connor, who became one of television's biggest stars as grumpy, bigoted but lovable Archie Bunker on the landmark 1970s TV series "All in the Family," died on Thursday. He was 76.

The Bronx-born O'Connor died at Brotman Medical Center in the Los Angeles suburb of Culver City of a heart attack brought on by complications from diabetes, his publicist Charles Sherman said. His wife, Nancy, was at his side.

"He was having chest pains at home," Sherman said. "They rushed him to the hospital and they tried to revive him without any luck. He'd been in and out of the hospital but his heart seemed fine so this kind of took us by surprise."

Though O'Connor had a long career in show business that included scores of stage and film roles, he was indelibly linked to Bunker and "All in the Family," which was hailed for its groundbreaking social satire -- the likes of which had never before been seen on American television.

The show, which was based on a popular British series, "Till Death Us Do Part," debuted on CBS in January of 1971 and ran for eight seasons before the show was revamped and premiered under a new title, "Archie Bunker's Place."

The original show opened with O'Connor and co-star Jean Stapleton as his scatterbrained wife Edith behind the piano in the living of their working-class home in Queens, singing the standard "Those Were The Days."

The groundbreaking series first drew controversy over the comic rantings of Bunker, who called blacks "jungle-bunnies" and "spades," Puerto Ricans "spics" and Asians "chinks."

But the show became a major hit and transformed O'Connor from a journeyman actor into a household name with critics hailing his performance as a masterpiece. He won four Emmys for the part.

'MEATHEAD' AND THE JEFFERSONS

Bunker's foils on the show were his liberal, intellectual son-in-law, portrayed by Rob Reiner -- who the irascible dock foreman referred to as "Meathead" -- and the black family next door, the Jeffersons, who later had a hit television series of their own.

O'Connor once described his portrayal of the narrow-minded Bunker this way: "I'm not playing him to make people hate him for his attitude or make them like him. I'm just playing his attitude as truthfully as I know how."

That portrayal showed Bunker as a loser trapped in his own prejudices and was praised for ultimately advancing race relations.

As he once told the Los Angeles Times: "The funny thing about Archie is that he wouldn't change his mind. That was the fun, the comedy and the satire. That was what you laughed at. He never laughed at anything himself .... The world was a painful place to him. And because it was painful to him, it was funny to you."

"Carroll O'Connor as Archie Bunker was genius at work, God's gift to the world," Norman Lear, producer of "All in the Family," said after learning of his death.

O'Connor returned to series television in the late 1980s, winning his fifth Emmy as the small-town sheriff in the NBC series "In the Heat of the Night," which was based on an Academy Award-winning film.

TRAGEDY PROMPTS ANTI-DRUG CRUSADE

Tragedy struck for O'Connor in March of 1995 when his only son, who had been battling drug addiction, shot himself to death. Hugh O'Connor's death inspired O'Connor to launch an anti-drug crusade, which culminated in his public condemnation of the man he said had sold his son drugs.

O'Connor called the drug dealer, Harry Perzigian, a "partner in murder" and a "lawbreaker" and gave out his address so that he could be ostracized, saying in one interview: "Harry Perzigian, you sleazeball, we're going to get you."

Perzigian sued O'Connor for slander but lost the case after a jury trial in Los Angeles.

Film critic Leonard Maltin has said that were it not for O'Connor's "long-running gig as TV's loudmouth bigot Archie Bunker," the actor would not have scored very high based on his work in movies, in which he often played nasty heavies and gruff, boorish characters.

Born Aug. 2, 1924, he was educated at the University of Montana and at Dublin's National University."

His last screen role was as Minnie Driver's grandfather in the romantic comedy "Return to Me."

wow what a shock anthony quinn a couple weeks ago now o'conner. Slowly the legends are passing away yet with no one to replace them on the horizon.

Archie was a racist and a foul mouthed hypocrite but it showed in a comedic character the wrongs of america and it challanged things. It didnt promote racism and other important issues it bought them into peoples living rooms. It was probably one of the most important shows of the last half century.

RIP archie.

Here is another one I just saw

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Legendary blues guitarist John Lee Hooker, whose spare hypnotic style born in the heart of the Mississippi Delta influenced generations of rock and folk stars, died on Thursday in his home near San Francisco. He was 83.

"John Lee Hooker passed away peacefully in his sleep this morning," The Rosebud Agency, Hooker's San Francisco booking agent, said in a statement.

Hooker, an influence on many of the world's most prominent musicians and a 1991 inductee into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, had been in good health and frequently performed despite his advanced age, manager Rick Bates said.

"This was totally unexpected. He had the audience on their feet three or four times on Saturday night," Bates said. "He enjoyed performing and he found joy in sharing his music with people."

Bates said Hooker was not known to have been suffering from any particular illness and attributed the death to natural causes. In an interview with the Arizona Republic last February, Hooker said his health was "pretty good ... I'm still kicking -- anybody I can find."

Hooker, who was born in a shack near Clarksdale, Miss., on Aug. 22, 1917, was one of the giants of U.S. blues music and continued to win both popular and critical praise well into his 80s.

He outlived most of the other greats -- such as Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, Elmore James, Lightnin' Hopkins -- who learned their craft in the Mississippi Delta and other parts of the rural south.

A HUGE LOSS FOR THE BLUES

But unlike B.B. King and other blues elder statesmen, the man known as "the Hook" made no concessions to popular taste, his music was always unique and uncompromising, with a distinctive staccato guitar and gravelly voice.

Beginning with his signature hit "Boogie Chillen," recorded in 1948, Hooker laid down a trail of pop smashes including songs like "I'm In the Mood," "Boom Boom," and "Dimples," establishing a gruff, growling, foot-stomping presence on the music scene and presiding over periodic revivals of blues popularity.

Over the course of his career, Hooker's persistent, chugging rhythms were picked up and amplified by rock stars ranging from the Rolling Stones to Van Morrison, and he was featured in a cameo role in the 1980 Dan Aykroyd/John Belushi movie "The Blues Brothers."

In 1989, he was "rediscovered" yet again and producer Roy Rogers recorded Hooker playing with such performers as Carlos Santana, Bonnie Raitt, Robert Cray and George Thorogood, producing the Grammy Award-winning album "The Healer." In 1992, "Boom Boom" was re-released and became an even bigger hit in Britain than it had been in the 1960s.

Frank Alkyer, editorial director for Downbeat Magazine, a leading jazz and blues journal, said Hooker's death was a huge loss for the blues.

While it had been decades since Hooker had written a new song, it seemed like every decade younger musicians were recording his music, he said.

"He was definitely the last of the really huge popular blues guys. Besides B.B. King, who else has that kind of stature? In the pantheon of the blues I would put him in the top 3, at a minimum top 5 of jazz and blues artists."

GAVE UP HARD LIVING

Hooker, who suffered from arthritis and other maladies, gave up his hard living ways years ago.

"I don't drink hard liquor, I quit smoking. A little beer once in a while is about it," he told Reuters in a 1995 interview. "I smoked like a chimney stack, I used to drink like a whiskey still."

But he still loved to be surrounded by young beautiful women.

"They run over each other getting to me, yeah they do ... I like young women. When a woman's older than me, that ain't fun."

He was philosophical about his mortality.

"I live while I'm living. When I'm gone, I'm gone," he said, adding that he wanted to be remembered simply "as a great musician."

At a performance last weekend in Santa Rosa, California, Hooker once again proved his point, tearing through his vast catalog of hits.

"He was playing the boogie and he had quite a few fans and friends up on stage," Bates said. "He had a big smile on his face as he's always had his entire life."

Bates said Hooker left behind "a large extended family" in the San Francisco Bay area, and had always put his music and his fans first.

When asked about his personal life in the interview with the Arizona Republic last February, Hooker said, "I'm single. But I still get lucky once in a while."

With the death of Archie, does that mean Norris' career is dead too?

Too bad about Carroll O'Conner and John Lee Hooker. Two of the great ones.

It's sad that we lost Carroll O'Connor and John Lee Hooker today, but somehow I think Roger will be more upset about this:

Oscar-Winning Actor Del Toro Breaks Wrist on Set
June 21, 2001 8:29 pm EST

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Actor Benicio Del Toro, the heroic Mexican cop in "Traffic," broke his wrist and came out on the losing end of a recent fight scene between himself and fellow Oscar winner Tommy Lee Jones in their latest movie, studio officials said on Thursday.
Del Toro broke his wrist while diving for a knife in an action sequence with Jones on the set of "The Hunted," a thriller about a trained assassin who made a sport of preying on humans, Paramount Pictures said on Thursday.

"He put his hand down wrong and just broke his wrist," a studio spokeswoman said.

The accident, which occurred a week ago in Portland, Ore., forced filmmakers to halt shooting with just five days of production left, and those scenes will be completed when Del Toro recovers, a studio spokeswoman said.

"We'll be staying in touch with his doctors to see when he's ready to come back and finish his work," she said. "It's not a big deal, really. It's no different than doing a re-shoot, except the insurance company pays for this."

The film is slated for release sometime next year.

The Puerto Rican-born Del Toro, 34, won the Academy Award for best supporting actor this year for his role as a Mexican narcotics agent in "Traffic." Jones, 53 won an Oscar for his supporting role as a U.S. marshal in 1993's "The Fugitive."

That's sad, especially after the tragedy of what happened to his son a few years ago. He was a sitcom legend.

I guess we'll be hearing Norris on the show tomorrow then...

John Lee Hooker was one of the great bluesmen. His influence & ability are surpassed by only a few in the blues world. He's one of the few guitar players I was always hoping to see play one day.

I have to start watching the news more...I had NO idea! I used to watch All in the Family all the time. I still watch it, on Nick at Night, when I'm home. It was such a great show. He turned out to be a very good person after his son died. (not that he wasn't before, it just seemed to show more after).
