ok I Live on Long Island Now but was born and raised in Jersey. It took me 21 years of my life to escape but after living on this one big strip mall they call LI, I really miss it! For the same apartment you pay about 550 a month there I pay 1200 up here. as far as taxes go dont even go there my dad has a house with a little over three acres and pays $12,000 a year in taxes alone. Pensy is a treat. Everything is relative though. I mean how much is usual salary where your from compared to here. F it I say I am moving to Florida.

Well, a sincere thank you to all you Jerseyians for helping me out here. This is what I've learned;

Jersey is proud of there sport teams. The only pro team that uses New Jersey in their name is the Devils (sorry I can't bring myself to use Nets and pro team in the same statement) and they all but signed a deal to move to Milwaukee in 94. Thankfully they started winning and stayed here. The other pro teams that play in New Jersey identify themselves as New York. OK. What ever

Many of you take pride that there is so much to do here and you are so close to your favorite cultural and entertainment centers, New York and Philadelphia. Yup, Jersey pride.

Farmland, lots of it, The Garden State and Jersey tomatoes. That is something to be very proud of. Good vegetables are always in demand. I did a bit of research on that one. Jersey ranks 47th in the US in total farm acreage. Jersey exports only 12% of its produce crop to the United States and 28% internationally. Toxic residue in Jersey produce exceeds acceptable limits in 46 of the 50 states and Puerto Rico. But you do grow really big tomatoes here.

Attitude. Can't argue that one. Your state pride and Jersey attitude is unparalleled. Bravo to you on that one.

And finally, many of you defined one thing that made it all very clear to me. Most of you hate Bon Jovi. Now that rocks!! Hold your head high and stand proud New Jersey! That cleared it up for me! :-)

I live in southern Ocean County and I love it here. I can walk to the lake, and it's only a short drive to the ocean or bay. The pace is slower down here. I grew up in Union County and have been moving steadily south (Middlesex County, Monmouth County, and now Ocean County). I'd love to own a vacation home in Wildwood Crest at some point.

Granted, New Jersey isn't all great, but I love where I live. :)

Swallow.. I think you forgot to add [sarcasm] and [/sarcasm] or [facetious statement] and [/facetious statement] to what you wrote.
BUT... I will point out ONE thing that NO REGULAR MEMBER of this board can deny is a reason to love New Jersey...

I hardley consider those town farm land. Try mendham, chester, long valley, harding, madison. Those are the towns that make Jersey great and why I never want to leave (ok, maybe not chester, but its the closest fast food).

And let's not forget that Bergen County is one of the richest counties in the entire country.

I do believe that it is Morris County...thanks in large part to Harding, Madison, and Mendham.

Yes, Morris County has its fair share of undesirables (ehem...Dover, Roxboury, East Hanover), but what part of the country doesn't.

I lived in NJ for 14 years before moving to another dump called Long Island in 1994. Despite being known as the armpit of the nation, if not the world, the Nets & Devils (sorry I'm a Ranger Fan the laughs at the fact they hold cup parades in a parking lot.), the freaking tolls.

Looking at Tankgrrl's experiences with both areas, I may too feel tempted to move to Florida after college graduation. The cost of living is cheaper, there's hardly any snow. And if you are like my brother, you can be close to Disney and other shit.

But if I leave the NY area I will definately miss NYC. I wish rents were cheaper in the 5 burroghs. I think I'm more of a city person.

I can't believe I missed this mention by Claire
quote:

And out West Jersey-Wayne, Morristown, Hopatcong

Hopatcong? shithole

And don't even get me started on Newton. The last time I went there I swore I was seeing the cast of Deliverance.

And another thing that bugs me, how come every sign on 80 West says "Netcong"? The town consists of a Quick Chek and a barber shop. Ponderous.

-------------------
But there's also this: there are over 5,000 men in this city, who know that being a policeman is an endless, glamourless, thankless job that's gotta be done.

I know it, too, and I'm damn glad to be one of them."

Ahh.. clear and concise logical demonstrations of the negative aspects of the areas in question.
By the way.. you do realize that with that statement you basicly called me an inbred throwback to the stoneage, or some such, don't you?
I do have a great question if you'ld take the time to answer it..
The "last time" you went through Newton.. how long did it take you to traverse the extent of rt. 206 you were driving to get through the town, and did you stop for anything more than a few traffic lights and maybe gas?
This is what I mean.. New Jersey is very much the opposite of Florida.. most "Scenic" areas of Fla are only "scenic" until you get about 4 or 5 blocks off of the highway or state route that you're traveling on, whereas Jersey is the exact opposite.. you have to actually TRAVEL a ways off the beaten path before you encounter the "nice" areas.
Using my Florida example... I went to college in Sarasota.. a very money rich Fla city, VERY scenic.. ALL of directly accessible from the Tamiami trail.. YET.. travel 5 blocks OFF of Tamiami and it all turns into slums.. My college was right in the thick of "scenic" Sarasota, and my entire campus could hear gunshots almost evry other night coming from those blocks a few streets away.
Sparta central looks like white trashville.. Newton central looks the same.. yet travel a little off the beaten path and you'll see beautiful countryside and nice.. large, well maintained and rather affluent homesteads. This whole argument can be pretty much summed up with the old addage "don't judge a book by it's cover"

i love jersey cause we are hated by everyone. we are a shithole, no one likes us and no one ever will, and that's fucking awsome. We are the outcast state, and after living and surviving here, you get a sense of pride for this place. you don't like peoples jokes, no matter how true they are. you get to enjoy the aroma of newark on the turnpike, you learn to just love the things about this state that everyone else hates. And plus we have the Devils, which makes living here a helluva lot more livable.

I agree with Spuds about Morris County being the richest in the state. Most of the weathier sections are near Morristown and Mendham areas, but the towns along rt 46 are kind of trashy. I live in Kenvil, and am neighbored by wharton, dover, hopatcong and netcong. Those places are the dark side of the county.

This also annoys me because all of my South Jersey friends think of the north as very wealthy when they are only partially right. They only think of the rich towns along rt 24. Then again, check out how run down salem county is and I realize Roxbury isn't so bad after all.

In all honesty.. this can be a dangerous topic for discussion... I've seen it before.. a lot of people just hate Jersey for whatever reason.. but alot of folks (including myself) start taking their criticisms of the state as a criticism of themselves.. while this should say alot about our state pride.. I think it's important here at this point to just remind people that just because someone hates the state you live in DOESN'T mean they hate you.. everybody please try to keep that in mind.

Rooned It, Hopatcong is Sussex County not Morris although I kept recommending they succeed from it since sussex county sucks. Well so does Hopatcong but it's still better than Sussex County.

Didn't really mean it quite like that. I just have a lot of issues with that whole area. I know a bunch of cool people from around there though. Anyway, to answer your question. It was about 4 years ago now that I dared go that far on 206. Basically I just picked up 206 in Byram and rode it to the Ames in Newton to the Ames. It was a rather odd experience. And what's the deal with Andover?

Ah Sussex County, a simple country life.

I knew you didn't mean it that way.. was just illustrating a point.. and making a joke..
I figured you hadn't gotten off of 206.. like I said.. what you generally SEE is crap.. you have to dig for the good stuff, that's the trick to NJ.. as far as Andover.. it does look even more backwoods than newton from what you see on 206.. but it's got it's little gems too I'm sure

New Jersey to all the other states is like O&A to all other radio programs. Scrappy, underdog, and we bite.

Seriously, the crappy areas of Jersey are there to fool you into thinking the whole state is a craphole like the section of the Turnpike from Lincoln Tunnel to Edison.

Down the shore, try Long Beach Island, or Island State Park. Beautiful.

Well, I can't say much for the rest of Jersey, but the Shore is THE most beautiful place on all the East Coast, and I include the entire state of Florida in that statement. Long Beach Island is the coolest fucking place on the planet. Now, that said, let me remind all of you Jersey people very clearly:
