I'm sitting here watching the Robert Downey Jr trial on CourtTV. He's facing up to four years in prison for violating his parole, parole stemming from a conviction for drug possesion.

This time around, he checked into a luxury hotel on Thanksgiving day, locked himself in his room and was about to get high when the police, acting on an anonymous tip, busted in and arrested him. Turkey good, crack bad.

The fact that both the room and the drugs were purchased with money Downey earned, not from chain snatching or stealing car radios, but rather while engaging in his chosen profession counts for little. As does the fact that he was behind closed doors at the time. See, he was doing drugs, and as anybody who has ever seen an ABC after-school-special can tell you, drugs are bad.

For some reason, it's o'kay for talking frogs to sell beer to children, but drugs are the Devil's candy. Or is that Kit-Kat bars? I'm always getting those two confused.

I don't want to go off on a rant here, but how can a Country whose very origins stem from the principles of personal freedom, be so ass backwards when it comes to things like drugs and the sex trade.

You can legally buy a gun, but not a blowjob. You can turn on anyone of 80 channels and see senseless acts of violence, but God forbid you spy a nipple. It's alright to drink yourself into a drunken coma, but don't you dare get high. Unless, of course, it's with a Doctor's prescription, than everything is just dandy. Don't let your kids do drugs, but give them Zoloff from a pez dispenser if their youthful hyperness get in the way of your couch potato time.

Look, I understand that we live in a society and that we pass laws based on the greater good, but drugs & prostitution aren't going any where anytime soon. And I'm not sure that either is any more dangerous than any of our already legal vices. Want to regulate something? Begin with BigMacs. Or something truly harmful, 2nd hand smoke. Reinstate prohibition. Outlaw red meat. Ban all cell phone. Demand helmets be worn while driving. Make vitamin usage mandatory. Stop the sharing of all bodily fluids. No kissing without tongue condoms. And since many die from old age, criminalize that as well. Two words, Logan's Run.

Downey got a 2nd probation, btw. Lucky him, he get's to avoid jail as long as he submits to a myriad of court ordered demands, including weekly drug testing and random searches of his home, car and person. Don't know about anybody else, but I'll sleep better tonight knowing that this desperado is under such scrutiny.

I realize I'm only shouting at the rain here, but there's something very wrong when laws exist to govern individual liberty... or the lack there of! What one, two or twenty consenting adults do, assuming no harm is caused to anybody else, is nobody else's business. We should be the land of the free, not because we have 85 different ways to order coffee, but rather because we are allowed to live our lives as we see fit. I don't do drugs, nor would I employ the services of a prostitute (well, maybe if I was really horny and it was TeenWeek IV, The Brothel), but perhaps somebody here can explain to me why I should have to risk arrest to do either.

Guess I ended up ranting afterall, huh? A big FU to the 1st tool who "Dylans" me ;-)

Certain drugs are illegal because phamaceutical companies are way too powerful with politicians.

Now if you legalize drugs and prostitution you get regulation. Most drug overdoes occur when dealers up the potency of their drug and users don't know. So they take the same amount but it is more potent. Prostitution would be safer with testing and disease control. But this will never happen.
