positive suggestions? How about you apply some positive pressure to remove your head from your rectum. :)

but seriously, criticism of any kind can be taken two ways, as a complaint, or as a plea for change. I keep coming here, and I make my little changes here and there. If you feel that I only post complaints, you should really venture out of the slacker thread a bit more.

I'll readily admit that I'm a negative poster. But, without negativity, how would you know postivity?

As for Magus and Kid A's positions on this board (along with many others here)...we've all talked about this before about how the board has changed. There is no denying it, this board has, and will again, change. This board is a reflection of the people on it...and by it's very nature, because the coming and going of O&A fans, it will always change.

Fundamentally, this board, when smaller and more private, was purely just people interacting thru the faceless media of the web. It was alot looser and free b/c people could be what they wanted and what they shared. They didn't have to carry their own personal baggage with them, and they would not be viewed by their perceived shortcomings via in personal contact. They made the rules as they went along, and it was a freeform of ideas and views. But, it was not to last. The thing about a freeform beginning...is that people interacting within the web parameters eventually desire or move towards seeing them outside the web space...which brings us to the ol' bang party and beginnings like the ESPNZone. Once the bang party happened, this site boomed, and alot of the current members now came from that "gold rush". By the show's talk about the board, and O&A's very rise, this site was "the place" to be. Problem is, that with so many people, rules needed to be developed, and that freeform nature that was so wonderful began to disappear. At one point this board was so out-of-control, O&A were actually pissed off at this site...and we were in danger of losing focus, being the focal point of negative talk, and losing our steam. Trust me, if those rules didn't be put in place, there would have been no site right now...or we'd be the equivilant of the Calzone Box.

I miss that freeform times...back before (perhaps)this board loss it's innocence (maybe where the high school analogies stem). But, you will find that this is just a schism of many things in our lives when something is new, pristine and innocent....before it gets muddled. But, here-in lies the problem, everything gets that way eventually. Shangri-La is a pipe-dream.

They call it halcyon days...those days that we recall fondly...when things kind of made sense. There were halcyon days to this board...but, like everything else, things change. This site got bigger, and we began to associate with one another outside the web paramaters...sometimes with good results, sometimes with not-so-good results. But, if you are lamenting that pristine-like quality this board had, you have to realize that it was only temporary...and it will always be temporary. As a reflection of the many types of people on this board...including yourselves (and myslef)...you (I) have to take some sort of repsonsibilty that you (I) helped change it to what it is now. Nobody did it while we weren't looking...it changed before our own very eyes. And I think those changes were inevitable.

I think this board still is a great place for fans of O&A, where we can interact on a day to day basis with other fans of O&A...but b/c of this site's size and the show's huge growth...I think that any thoughts that this board will be the metophorical Shangri-La is a pipe-dream, and always was. It may have seemed so, but it was just an illusion because we wanted to be a Shangri-La. It's just a message board. People choose or choose not to interact outside the board.

Is this board a community....yes it is.

com·mu·ni·ty :
A group of people having common interests.

Yup, there's no denying it. And like any community...there are good times, bad times, a myriad of different personalities...and it's your choice in how much or less you interact. I choose to be a part of this community b/c I get something out of it, and this is why I have been, and continue to be on this site. We have common interests, goals and/or backgrounds...and all are fans of the show.

Actually k1d, I know that you don't just post negative comments. I wasn't referring soley to you. You are included, but there are many people that have negative comments.

Did you notice that this turned into the Maynard-k1d debate? Where the hell is everyone else? Opitions are like assholes. Everyone has one. And this place especially.

Well, I heard of the board from my husband. I read here and there for a while, but didn't join and begin posting until after being in Foundry Chat for a while and being encouraged by some, for whatever reason, to display my insanity on here. ;)

When I initially started posting, this board was already beginning to come down from its high of replicating the show it was founded about. I haven’t been able to be as ‘insane” on here as I used to be, but that isn’t because I have gotten to know people from here. I attribute it to the rules changing in the middle of the game. ;)

In my early posting days I came here because it was an escape from “my real life”. However, since then things have changed. I don’t come here for the show or for that escape anymore, but for some of the people I interact with from here. Many of you have become good friends, whose friendships have extended well beyond this board and it’s functions, onto my phone lines and into my home and heart. And though some of you remain the same cocky bastards I met back then, and more assholes join by the day, I don’t allow what you do or not do, affect how I feel about this place or the people I have become close with from here. ;)

If anything, I feel knowing people from here, out of this place, actually makes you post better. Because attending the functions and so forth gives you an opportunity to see people and get a gist of their humor. Like my incident with Raven when I initially began posting. He knew not of my humor and I had no clue as to his, but the pool tourney brought us together and I am happy for that. It enabled me to get to know him and understand what it is that he posts and why and when he means it as humor and when he is serious. There are other examples of that and I am sure you all have your own. ;)

originally, i became a member to gain information about the show. now, its become a wonderful social outlet. i don't know if i miss the old board all that much. although the pile-ons were always interesting reading (and funny if it wasnt you), i was the object of one of those and it caused me to leave the board for months. its a kinder, gentler board now, thats clear. i know that some of you are opposed to that, but it works for me. the only peave i have is censorship, but i understand that its a necessary evil what with legalities, etc., so i abide by the rules. i'd much rather stay and be a good little post-er than confront the policies of the board. in closing, i love this place.

Wow... I got a few more responses than I thought.. thanks (keep it going) seeing why other folks keep coming back is a bit of an insight..
I myself come here because.. well.. I've made friends with quite a few folks here, and most other folks can make me laugh pretty regularly, and it's a lot better to get mad and vent about stupid shit here ( like people who take threads like this as an opportunity to jump on the soapbox and let people know what they think is wrong with the board coughKIDcough ;) ) than about the stuff that happens outside of the place.

Why should this thread be any different than the rest? ;)

Ya know it's funny, more than a few people have told me that I care about the board too much. And yes, you guys that said it are right, the board has changed and will never go back to the way it was. There are new people here, people that would've never understood how the board worked back in the day. Alas, the people that made the board the way it was are, by and large, no longer here. I suppose I'm still somewhat longing for the board to be fun again, and I do enjoy it sometimes, but then some stupid shit happens to sour it to me again. I'll keep coming back, because of the good things. But, I'll never forget how the board once was.

Thanks for the insight, Gooch. After reading your post I have a better understanding of what someone meant, when they told me that I played it perfectly(it wasn't meant as a negative dig) last week.

Personally for me, the ESPNZone, was the start of me being less and less fan of the show. It changed the focus of the board, which eventually dimished the freeform nature of the board. The more and more people got together, the more and more the board was less about O&A and more about parties, personal baggage, and birhdays???.

Now while that would be fine in the freeform atmosphere, an atmosphere that reflects a a radio show that where punching below the belt is not only accepted, but its rewarded... noooo we had to become a community that cared about each other's feelings. If one wants to protect their feelings, do they go on, or call, an O&A/Howard Stern type show? If back in the late 80's/early 90's, if a fat pig wanted to protect her feelings... did she wear spandex that was (insert # here) sizes too small and sit in the front row of an Andrew Dice Clay show? The answer is "No." So, why a message board that is modeled after a radio show that ridicules people on a daily basis be any different is beyond me. If one cares about their feelings so much either a.) don't talk about your personal shit or b.) if you feel a need to discuss your life and not have to worry about being tooled on, Lifetime Television Message Board may be an option to look into.

The reasons I still come here are on a need to know basis. IM me at my AIM name that is provided below, and I will let you know if I feel you need to know.

I have intriguing posts? That's a first.

I keep coming back to piss off you guys that hate me and for my ultimate goal of 1 million posts.

I agree with Slash. You can't make a joke without a ;) or a :) or someone will take it wrong. And even then they might still.

Also the if you don't like it then leave crap is the weakest line ever. Did you tell people in Cambodia under Pol Pot that if they didn't like it they should leave. I know it's a completely different thing but it still applies.

Ok, seriously.

I love this place. Even when everything was taken away from me... something kept me coming back. Maybe it's the fact that I enjoy talking to these people on AOL IM more so than friends from school.

This is an interesting place and the reasons are endless. The O&A connection makes the community. There are few places the demented can gather.

One interesting thing here is watching people go at each other’s throats (like Kid and Gilligan in this thread) but still manage to put their differences aside and still get along. You don't see much of that in the real world.

It is also amusing to watch "episodes" unfold on the board. Things like the slacker thread and the perception of that group being a clique or a bunch of elitists. Then the elitist tag moves on to other topics and issues. Similar things have happened with comments from Kids race threads. When the dust settles from these skirmishes, everybody has a good laugh with it (I thought we were all just having fun) and everyone moves on to something else.

The social/party aspect of this board is very interesting. Where else could so many people with common interests from various states, come together in person and enjoy each other’s company, time and again?

A personal note, one thing that keeps me coming back is the people. I am a youngster trapped in an old mans body (what the hell, I might as well role with the joke). If I'm not the oldest member here, I have to be in the top 5. As many of you have told me, I'm old enough (or in some cases older than) to be many of your fathers. But my interests in humor, music and socializing are still that of a 20-year-old. All of you have welcomed me and many enjoy hanging with me and I don't have to feel like a fish out of water doing it. To me, that is priceless!

I found this place after hearing it on the show last year, and was drawn by the show, initially.
I quickly realized that this place was it's own entity, actually pretty far removed from the show.
The fact that i'm socially inept, lacking the "Hi,my name is..." gene that so many other people have, i found it easier to talk to strangers here than in the real world, so i hung around, eventually realizing that this stupid board had actually helped me in my everyday life. I now find it easier to talk to people that i normally wouldnt have before.

Or maybe i'm just a dick.
