Whenever I try to boot up my main comp I get this message, "Disk Boot Failure, Please Insert System Disk." Now I detached and reattached the IDE cables to no avail and can't figure out what's wrong with my hard drive. The bios won't recognize it all. Maybe I'm thinking wrong. Any suggestions?

Could be a virus. Use your floopy recovery, if you made one.

Absolutely. Once you're sure you're virus free, throw in the system boot disk (assuming you made one) and once you get back into windows re-run a virus scan. I had the same thing happen to me last week while I was going through a Mobo change. I didn't have a virus, just seemed like a system "hiccup".

Sorry fellas, but if the BIOS doesn't see the drive then you're a bit more fucked. No virus can do that. The closest thing I've seen is a virus that rewrites the BIOS - now THAT sucks!

But yeah guys, if the BIOS can't see the hard drive, you've got no chance of scanning it for viruses anyway - you can't scan something that isn't there.

AM -

1) Try a new IDE cable altogether. Ya never know, you could get lucky.
2) Try putting that hard drive into another computer (as a slave) and see if it'll show up.
3) May also want to take a listen to verify that the drive isn't clunking, making weird noises - and see if it's even spinning at all when the power's on.

And hey, if nothing else works, you'll have a lovely paperweight.

I have seen this. you need the systems disk to boot up because some of the kernel files are messed up. nothing to do with the hardware.

President Clinton visiting Vietnam, shooting out the door of Air Force 1 (from the Clinton in Vietnam audio clip):
Clinton's advisor:"Mr. President, how can you shoot innocent women and children?"
Clinton:"It's easy. Just don't lead'em as much!"

ron if the bios doesnt see the hard drive that has nothing to do with the kernels its probally either a bad cable, a problem with the power supply or the hard drive symply died! which would really suck....but look on the bright side the magnets from hard drives are fun to play with

If this helps at all this happened once before and all of a sudden corrected itself.

1) I'll try the new IDE cable.
2) I'll try that too.
3) To the best of my knowledge that isn't happening.

Thanks for the suggestions.

RonRon - the BIOS, basically, is a program located on a chip on the motherboard that detects all hardware FIRST and sets everything in motion. When you turn on your computer and see the RAM counting, the BIOS is testing it. (BIOS: Basic Input/Output System) If the BIOS cannot see the drive, then no files can be accessed on the drive. If no files can be accessed on the drive, then the problem cannot lie in those files.

I tried replacing the IDE cables to no avail.

So I'm going to put the hard drive in another comp and see how that works.

I've done a few tests and have determined that the problem is with the hard drive.

I've done a few searches on price watch and have seen some sweet 60 GB 54000 rpm drives. Now some drives may make up for that by having faster access speed and greater arial density. Any drive you would recommend? I wouldn't want to spend too much maybe around at 150 at most.

54000... damn, that would burn a hole through your computer. :)

Anyhoo, whenever I buy a drive, I go with Western Digital. They do not fail often, and if they ever do fail, you can send it back and get a new one, or a comparable one. Example: once my brother's 5 gig died after a good few years of use, he called WD, and since they didn't make the 5 gig anymore, they sent him a 6.4 instead, their smallest model at the time.

I've had too many failures in the past with shit like Seagate, Maxtor, and the ol' Conner Peripherals (am I dating myself or what?) that Western Digital is all I'll trust.

Also - buy at a computer show. Always more bang for your buck.

Another edit - Right now Western Digital has their 5400RPM 60GB listed as $145, and their 7200RPM 60GB is $183. Both would probably be lower at a show.

I got a Maxtor 60 gig 7200 at a comp show for $110 2 weeks ago - new, in a sealed box. If theres a local show in your area anytime soon, you might wanna try there first. But thats not a bad online price for that roomy of a drive - whats the brand?

If Pricewatch has 140, the show will probably be 150-ish.... the prices will probably come out the same after shipping.

And HGW... Maxtor.... yuck. Remember, sometimes you've gotta go the extra step, pay a few more bucks for the reliability. It's a HARD DRIVE after all.... kinda important.

Of course, with my luck, if I plug WD, you'll buy one, and it'll die in a week.. hehe.... TRUST ME THOUGH! :)

I guess I'll go buy the Western Digital(that's the brand hgw) drive online. I was interested in Maxtor but I think I'll go WD. Also the drive that died on me was a Seagate.
