What a major disappointment! I'm sure die-hard fans of D&D will disagree with me here, but this was definitely not the game I expected.

I had picked up Baldur's Gate 2 when that first came out a few years back and I kinda expected Neverwinter Nights to be pretty similar. The spells, weapons, and layout are pretty much the same for both games so I figured that the combat would be as well. Not so on that aspect.

I've always been one who prefered turn-based combat to real-time. I like the strategy aspect of turn-based and feel that real-time offers nothing more than just "run up and bash the enemy until either you or they die" combat. Anyway, Neverwinter Nights is more the latter of the two there. First off, you have little to no control over anyone else in your party besides the main character and if they decide to run off screen to fight, you have to fucking chase them, find them and then start fighting a bunch of monsters that are all bunched together. Baldur's Gate 2 at least paused between your turns and gave you a chance to think out the strategy and then attack.

Needless to say, I returned Neverwinter Nights today and picked up both Arcanum and Age of Wonders 2, both turn-based games. Hopefully both of these are what I'm looking for.
