This is basically a repost from another thread, with some new info. But, since this will be a huge summer flick, there will be tons of threads. This is my attempt to consolidate them. Any and all info i find i will post here. This could also serve as a chat thread for the movie. BTW, the old "This belongs in the movie forum" joke is just played out, so dont be a tool and say it. Here we go.

FINAL FANTASY: THE SPIRITS WITHIN

Here is all that i know so far:

VOICE TALENTS
Alec Baldwin as "Grey"
Ming-Na Wen as "Aki"
Ving Rhames as "Ryan"
James Woods- To be Announced
Steve Buschemi as "Neil"
Donald Sutherland as "Dr. Cid" (obligatory Cid reference i suppose)
Peri Gilpin- To be Announced

PLOT
Squaresoft and Columbia pictures have been EXTREAMLY tight lipped about the plot. They know how much it would be worth if it slipped out. However, this much is known. It will NOT be based on any previous Final Fantasy Storylines from games. However, be on the look out for familiar scenery (one movie clip showed a area similar to Midgar with the foiliage in FF7's Ending). The script has undergone several re-writes, to strengten the plot on Earth. The plot (that which is known at this point) circles around events in the year 2065, after Aliens Come to Planet Earth. The Official Final Fantasy movie site has been tempting fans with a different movie trailer every week. However, if you have missed the clips you can visit this archive site.

This next section is taken from The Final Fantasy Shrine, one of my personal favorite sites.

quote:

The images that have come through thus far are clear, like-like, and just plain beautiful. Square is creating a virtual world, storyline, and characters unique from all of the Final Fantasy Games and the outlook is very promising. There have been many release dates proposed, but thus far it seems that the movie will be released in Mid-July of this year.

The Final Fantasy Movie is currently being produced at Square Honalulu. The film will not have any characters from previous Final Fantasies, but will instead have a completely original storyline.

Not much is known about the movie at this time. There have been unconfired reports that the movie will take place in the year 2065 and will include over 50 human characters, demons, an involving plot, and scenes both on earth and in space. The main character is believed to be named "Grey". The setting will be both earth and space, but there are no characters, storyline, magic, or other references from other Final Fantasy games.

The plot is rumored to be very complex, featuring aliens, a discovery by scientists that sets off a religious controversy, and magicians who were created through science. The story is said to center around a female scientist who is on the verge of breaking the language code of the aliens, and Grey, an ArmorMan Warrior (sort of the police of the late 21st century) from New York. Also included is the typical Square collection of heros: a brawler, a young magician, and several others. Rumored to be in the earliest of development stages are a sequel and a prequel, a video game, and books detailing the adventures of Grey before the time of the movie.

The voices to be used in the movie were announced in June 1999 and will include Alec Baldwin (Hunt for Red October), Ming Na Wen (The Joy Luck Club), James Woods (John Carpenter's Vampires), Donald Sutherland (Outbreak), Ving Rhames (Mission Impossible), Steve Buscemi (Armageddon), and Peri Gilpen (Frasier).

Square is using top-notch talent including former Disney animators, the art director from "The 5th Element", and the CG director responsible for the introduction sequences in Namco's Tekken 2 and Soul Blade.

The film's director is Square's own Hironobu Sakaguchi. Fans know him as the director of all the Final Fantasy games. The script is being written by Sakaguchi, Al Reinert (Apollo 13) and Jeff Vintar, whose unproduced adaptation of Frederick Pohl's Man Plus is considered one of Hollywood's most intelligent unproduced science fiction screenplays.

The movie is, in fact, being produced with a US release of the movie in mind instead of a Japanese release like many fans first suspected. The title has been picked up by Sony Pictures Entertainment (a.k.a. Columbia Tristar) for worldwide distribution - which means that Square is making this a massive undertaking and ensuring that the movie will get the wide distribution a film of its quality deserves.

With completely realistic CG graphics, a promising storyline, and a soundtrack which promises to be as good as the rest in the Final Fantasy Series, this film seems destined to be a hit. Final Fantasy fans everywhere definitely have something to look forward to. Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within - Coming to theatres in mid-2001.

Here are a few Pics. More will be added later.

Sephiroth, great job posting the links to the trailers. I personally never played or got into the FF games, but this is one movies I'm really looking forward to this year. The CGI looks amazing, and the storyline seems like its going to be strong enough that the CGI just enhances, as opposed to carries, this movie to success. Nice post!

The movie is coming out soon (July 11th), so back to the top. I was wondering if some people from the board would want to go see it opening day. I figure that at least 5 or 6 people get together, so it would be cool. Any ideas/suggestions?

:::coughing on the dust:::

Thanks for the update Sephiroth. I think this movie is going to take CGI movies to a whole new level. It's generations beyond the Anime that has come out in the past few years. I've never played any of the FF games, as I am more partial to the PC, but this movie looks like it is going to have a place in SciFi movie history.

I am anticipating this movie not just because it looks awesome but also because I heard the Spider-Man teaser will be attached to it. I think that I'll be seeing it Wednesday as at the late show and then see The Score later this weekend.

EDIT: I might actually wait for later this week to see it since there are good late night things on Wednesday.

Hey Sephiroth, I picked up the FF series, like many people, after playing the best game ever FF7.

I am well versed in all of 7 8 and 9. But are there any particular themes thats exist in the games before 7 that might stand out in the other games.
Whats the setup of the magic systems before 7?

Im not Sephiroth but i think i can help.....Final Fantasy 1 magic useres had to buy spells in stores. Then as thier level went up, they can use the spell more and more in battle. Ive never played FF2 or FF3. In FF4, magic users learned spells automatically as thier level increased. FF5 had a job system. You pick a job, and as you earn AP, you learn the spells the job teaches. This is kinda like the items in FF9. FF6 uses summoned monsters that you can equip that teaches you spells. Again, as AP increases, you learn the spells. Overall, id have to say the magic systems are less complicated. As you gain levels, you earn more magic points, and thus the more times you can uses the spell. Sephiroth probably knows more so he could fill you in better. Im just tryin to be helpfull.

I just saw FF:TSW this morning. Before I start my review, you should know that my review will be slightly biased. I have been playing Final Fantasy ever since the first game on NES, and have been excited about this movie ever since it was announced 5 years ago. To put it simply, it would be harder for Square to make a movie I would dislike. I went in wanting to like this movie. On to the review.....

I really liked it. Other than the CG, the movie didn't blow me away, but I certainly enjoyed it. I've read numerous reviews on the internet blasting the plot, and while it isn't Shakespeare, its passable. It's basically a plot similar to the Final Fantasy games, no better, no worse. A lot of people are going to be turned off by the constant talk of spirits and Gaia. Hell, if I ever hear the word spirit again it'll be too soon. The background of these spirits is never explained fully, and since it is such an integral part of the plot, much of the dialogue in the movie comes off sounding vague and confusing. The plot is still pretty easy to follow, even if it is nothing groundbreaking. The only other thing that was annoying were the "humerous" one-liners. Some were alright, but others were so horribly contrived I was embarassed to be watching them. It didn't detract from the movie that much, but they felt unnecessary. So, in summary, the plot is enjoyable, despite the psycho-babble.

The CG work in this movie is worth the price of admission alone. Trust me on that. It's obviously not real, but it's still oh so pretty!!!! Not that there weren't some minor problems. First of all, the design of the villian, Gen. Hein, is ridiculous. His face is basically a permanent evil scowl. Even if you didn't hear a word he said the whole movie, you would know from one look at his face that he is the bad guy. The other problem is something Square will have to work on for the next movie. The movie was hurt by the inability of the "actors" to show any emotions through their faces. Their faces hardly change at all. At one point, Aki was supposed to be crying, but her face apparently didn't get the message. The closest her face got was when she looked like she was getting pinched. That was the biggest problem with the CG, the inability of these actors to show emotion. This really hurt the film, and made the kiss uncomfortable to sit through. However, the action sequences were great. The phantoms were great villains in that the characters were never safe from them. The escape from the wastelands was an especially good sequence. Hell, they could make a theme park ride out of that one.

The last complaint I have is the voice acting of James Woods and Alec Baldwin. The other voice actors did good jobs, with the exception of Donald Sutherland who was excellent. I can't even describe how bad they were. I'll sum it up in one sentence since this is already painfully long: I'd take the voice actors from Resident Evil over Woods and Baldwin.

So, in summary, the CG work in this movie saved the movie. This is a groundbreaking film despite its OK plot and the current limitations of CG. While there is a lot to dislike, there is also a lot to like. Next time, however, I won't be so forgiving.
