Magnus, That must be nice. I can't even get my company to do casual summers. I would love every other Friday off.

Saw a Sunday Matinee of Final Fantasy. First let me say, I have only played ONE of the Final Fantasy games and got bored with it after about ten hours or so.

This movie KICKED ASS!!

The graphics are amazingly realistic. Like Seph said, there are times when you can completely forget the movie is animated and think your watching live action.

The story is strong and well told. Unlike Anime that tends to leave things unexplained or to skip over a lot of detail, everything is well explained and the structure of the story arc is well executed.

Now, for the draw backs. While the characters are incredibly detailed and realistic, the animators haven't quite mastered all the nuances of human facial expression. What that means is, when a character is hurt, their face doesn't show ENOUGH pain. When their sad, they don't look sad ENOUGH. In human actors, the performance would be considered wooden, along the lines of Nicholas Cage or David Douchaveny.

Also, for the first ten or fifteen minutes, I was playing the "who's voice is that" game. The actors they chose to do the voices have very distinctive voices and its a bit weird getting used to them coming out of different faces. Much more so than hearing say Robin Williams coming out of a blue jeanie.

However, the incredible voice talent does a great job of conveying the emotions of the characters, the animation is incredible and the story is well told.

To give an example of how detailed the animation is, there's a scene of an eagle flying, and you can actually see the control feathers on its wings adjusting to the wind currents.

This is a 9 out of 10 movie. Definitely worth the price of admission. I really hope word of mouth increases the box office next week. I really want to see more movies made this way. With the ability to create bigger worlds, more special effects, bigger stories, etc. there are a lot of great stories that could only be told properly on this scale.

I liked the movie a lot as well, but I thought the story was kinda weak. I have played quite a few of the FF games, and liked them. I also think what the movie was missing was intensity, but other than that it was done superbly. I also have to say that Kefka from FF3 was defenitely my most favorite FF villain, him that annoying laugh made me want to stick him in a fucking blender, I so wanted to destoy him...

Alright, Im bringing this thread up for one reason:

Final Fantasy DVD Review

The Movie
The first thing i noticed is that it has a wide-screen format. Once i got past that, i was throughtly impressed with it. The movie was the same, but i like the extras included. 2 full lenght commentaries: one with the Co-Director, Sequence Supervisor, Lead Artist, and CG Supervisor, and another with Animation Director and Editor. EXCELLENT CG Menues, and lots of other cool crap.

The Extras
The second CD is just extras, and great ones at that. It includes another great opening CG Menu, a mini-movie compliling all of Aki's dreams into one fluid scene, the Alternate Opening sequence to the Movie, a behind the scenes movie, TONS of other minor (but EXCELLENT) extras, and 2 of the coolest things i've ever seen on a DVD. The first is the "Final Fantasy Shuffler", a feature that allows you to edit and playback a pivitol scene from the movie (and Im not saying what scene), and affect how it turns out, fucking awesome. The second is purely humor, it is a mini-video that features all of the main character, including some phantoms, re-enacting Micheal Jackson's "Thriller" video, and Captain Hein plays the part of the scared girl. Funny as fucking hell.

If you liked the movie at all, you MUST buy this DVD. Satan commands you.
