I just got Max Payne this afternoon. I figured we could put the reviews in a new thread. Anyway, BULLET TIME RULES!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It doesn't make the game easy, though. It still is pretty difficult to aim while jumping in slo-mo, but it looks so damn cool. The game is VERY straightforward. There is very little searching around for "keys" to move one. It is mostly just kill everybody. That's it. No real puzzles or anything. But the action is great. The enemies have great AI. In one particular part, I ran into two enemies. I killed one, and the other one ran off. I immediately ran after him, but found that he was just running for backup. I then died. I've read that the game is supposed to adjusted its difficulty level for how good you do in the game. Since I am playing through for the first time, I can't see any evidence of that, but there have been no parts of the game that I have breezed through, so I guess it's working. I personally would have preferred more depth to the game ala Deus Ex, where there are many different approaches to getting through your obstacles. In Max Payne, its kill, kill, kill. But at least the action is fun. Hell, it's DAMN (true) good.

I just got this game too. If you have a computer fast enoguh to run it, go get it. The game looks and runs great. Bullet time is a really cool feature, jumping into a room packed with gangsters while on bullet time gives you plenty of time to dive to the ground killing 3 people before you hit the ground. The story is pretty good, and it's all about killing people, and not about finding stuff. No multiplayer though...

If you decide to buy it, help us out and buy it through this link:

when you say computer fast enough to run it, how fast are you talking about? would 500 mhz with a 3d card be good enough?

Yeah as long as you have a 3D card it should run fine. When you run the game you can set the resolution you want to play at, as well as if you want 16 or 32 bit textures. If you have a slower computer you can still play it at the lower resolutions.

Would a Herc ProphetII MX, a 1 gig CPU and 256 megs of RAM do the trick? I'm working on getting a GF3, but its taking a little time and I'm not so sure the GF2MX can handle it.

HGW,I went looking for a 3d card, the guy at the store said at least get the GF2MX and if you can afford it the GF3,and your comp is plenty fast enough for the game.

Is there any RAM minimum needed for the game, I have 500 mhz, intel celeron crap,64 MB RAM, is that enough for the game to run? I will be getting another 32-64 MB soon.

You need at least 128 MB ram and 256 is optimal. That processor may be pushing it though.

So is my best bet to just wait for Max Payne to come out for PS2?

I'm not sure I would wait for a demo and see how it does.

You really need a good machine to play this. IGN said a 600Mhz P3 with a GEForce2 was enough to play it. I myself have a P4 1.5Ghz with a GeForce2MX (that is wasting the power of the P4, sigh), and it runs smoothly in 32-bit color at 1024X760, but it does clow down at some points. And I mean to a point where it is unplayable. Large areas with many enemies will really tax your machine. Like the part where you finally track down Gognitti. I needed to put all the settings to low to make that part playable. So while most of the game will run fine on a slower machine, there will be areas that need a horse.

Looks Like I'm gonna go and pick it up - I have a credit at J&R, so I might as well use it for something good. Hopefully if I tweak some of the settings down, I'll be ok.

I'm running an AMD 1.2ghz with 512 megs of DDR Ram. The game runs great at 1200x1020 (32-bit) except when the comic strips are playing in between rounds the mouse pointer moves really slow, and jumps all over the screen. It happens sometimes when the camera is above Max too. Also, when i'm in game my start button flashes into the game at the bottom of the screen. I disabled some programs that i thought might be interfering such as ramidle and norton, but that didn't help. Anyone else have a similar problem, or know what could be wrong?

RAM is really cheap these days, you can't go wrong with adding a few hundred megs of extra ram. Check out this place if your looking to upgrade, they have some of the best prices i've seen:

Liquid I have the same problem on my machine.. I shut off all the back round crap like Mbprobe and it happend less. I just decided to live with it. I have a 1.13gig T-bird with 256 and a Geforce 2 pro card and the game chokes at 1024x768X32 everything maxed out I throttled it down to 1024x768X16 and moved a few other settings to medium instead of high. Everything is playing really smooth including the comic strip part. too bad there is no multi-player. I would love to see it running at 1600x1200. I guess it's time for Geforce 3. :)

Max Payne aint so great. Sure the graphics are nice but when people require mutliple shotgun blasts to the chest it kinda annoys me. Get Operation Flashpoint! Now that's realistic!

I just read a review on this game. It said bullet time is like the FX in the movie Matrix. Is this true? That would be great.

It most certainly is! This game rocks, no question - and I also notice that I don't have all that much of a problem in the area of comp resources. It could be a little smoother for me personally, but considering I'm on a GF2MX, I can't complain at all. The only thing that pisses me off is the fact that I don't have enough time to play it as much as I would like to (damn married life).

If you haven't gotten this game yet, you don't know what your'e missing out on!

It sounds like you should have no problem, except for WinME. From what I've heard, its not the best OS to have when trying to run games. I'm running Win98SE, a GF2MX card with 32 megs if SDRAM, 256 RAM on the MoBo and a 1gig PIII - no problems so far.
