Saw this on the Web

Austin needed stitches after being busted open legit by the Van Daminator on Smackdown. While he's not upset, there's word that the WWF might ban the move.

Val Venis and Sean O'Haire will go to OVW for the time being.

Kidman's rehab isn't going as well as expected. He'll see a doctor next week to find out what's wrong.

Man they would be stupid to try, and start banning moves. I mean this is wrestling, and granted its not real it is very physical, and their are bound to be accidents. I am sure they have been cases where someone did not pull their punch, or kicked way to soon, and accidenltey hit the guy. I think the WWF needs to searously think about what they are about to do

you're right: if they ban the guys who actually have talent from showing off their talent and we're left with useless pieces of crap like The Rock then the ratings will go down and they'll lose money. Those guys in the WWF are getting payed thousands (if not millions) to get in the ring and please the crowd, they don't have to do it. They could go get a regular office job if they dont want to get injured. I know its selfish, but the fans are the ones that buy the ppvs and the merchandise and we effectivly pay the wrestlers wages so they should be prepared to give something to us.

They should clarify that. I sure what they meant to say was "He will be banned from doing it to main eventers." I'm sure they will allow him to continue giving the Van Daminator to Raven and The Hardy's as long as he wants to.

This isn't unprecedented, nor is it an attempt to hold a mid carder back or protect the main eventers, nor is it STUPID, it is a move for the safety of the wrestlers, which seems to become less and less of an issue with the fans, sadly, by the day.

I mean, the WWF has banned the piledriver and any variation of it, including the Tombstone, after the Steve Austin- Owen Hart incident in 1997. Outside of the piledriver on Chyna by the RTC, which was sold as something that would end her career, something that would never had happened after a piledriver 5 years ago, there hasn't been a piledriver in the WWF since about May of last year when HHH piledrove the Rock (once again for a pin, making it seem like a deadly move) during the Ironman Match. It is to try to cut back on injuries that can cause permanent damage to the wrestlers. And, yes, BE DIALING, you can't use it on Jeff Hardy either. Do you think that Vince values Austin's life more than Jeff or something? Geez. I should hope not.

A Van Daminator can easily give a guy a concussion, especially if Rob isn't careful, and quite frankly, how careful can you be when you have to twist, jump, and kick a chair at the same time, not knowing at times where the hell your foot is gonna end up? Maybe it isn't so stupid after all.

I mean, I guess it's OK to you guys that Mick Foley is gonna be a vegetable in ten years, but I actually feel sorry for the guy, and wouldn't mind if the WWF took more of these measures to cut back on concusions and neck injuries.

But, then, the moves wouldn't be as cool, right? Well, at some point, you have to say, "Who gives a shit?"

RVD's been doing the move for several years in ECW without any serious injuries occurring, and now, just because Austin needs a couple stitches (and apparently isn't even angry about it), people start talking banishment. In the words of the late great Gorilla Monsoon, "Give me a break."

As far as the alleged pildriver ban goes, I have read that it's not banned outright, but that Vince has asked wrestlers to use special caution when using a piledriver maneuver and to try not to use it too much (this is due in part to the infamous Austin injury and also a minor injury Triple H suffered after taking a Tombstone piledriver). That's why 'Taker and Kane started using the chokeslam instead.

And Diamond Dust, I have friends who wrestle (some as a second job, some as a career), and I very much give a damn about what happens to them when they step in the ring. One friend broke his leg after being shoved off the top of a steel cage; another friend passed out as a result of blood loss during one match and then was legitimately knocked unconcious during another; and in one particularly disgusting incident, I watched from the second row as a young girl got her neck broken due to a badly miscalculated powerbomb. These images, particularly the last, haunt me, but you know what? All three of these people are still involved in wrestling to this day, despite swearing after each injury that they were done, because they love being a part of it. So please, do not presume that all wrestling fans don't give a shit about what happens to these wrestlers, because I most certainly do.

i think that if the wwf bans the move, rvd will have to use the van-terminator instead of van daminator.

Yeah, but Shane might have stolen any thunder that move had by using it against Vince at WM X-7. Damn show-off. :-P

ok, is it a problem to see taker and kane using the choke slam (which anyone can use these days) as their finisher and have it work all the time? yes it is. is it a bad thing that the pile driver has been put onto the shelf (whether it is per vince or per the wrestlers)? no it isn't. i love watching these guys wrestle, and would hate to see their careers shortened or ended due to the holds they put on one another. its a shame that we lose guys to career shortening injuries (see dynamite kid, shawn michaels as 2 examples) let alone losing guys because of a pile driver or van daminator. sure, there aren't a lot of instances where a wrestler will get hurt from a move like that, but the austin incident back in 97 and hhh last year should be enough to show you that it does happen, and can hurt the business. now sure, rvd has done this move for 4 years or whatever, but is it really worth it to have an injury to a person and lose that person from the roster, be it jeff hardly or steve austin? not in my opinion. it would hurt the wwf more if one of these guys got hurt and was put out for good. i think that may be the driving force behind limiting use of these moves, if not banning them outright...

god, what got into me? carry on

Just to clarify, I personally am not a fan of the piledriver. When I was younger and watched guys like Paul Orndorff and Jerry Lawler use the move all the time, I was always scared shitless that someone was going to end up dead. Given the long history of guys being seriously injured (quite frankly, I wouldn't be shocked to learn that someone DID die as a result of the move), I can understand why several organizations banned the move outright. Hell, given what happened to my friend last year, I wouldn't mind if they banned powerbombs too, but I digress.

The Van Daminator, however, usually results in nothing more serious than a sore spot for a few hours, when done properly. Austin ends up getting a bit more of the chair than most "victims" do, thus resulting in his needing two stitches, but that's still relatively minor compared to a compressed disc or a broken neck. If it was, say, Jerry Lynn, Steve Blackman, Mike Awesome, or some other mid- to lower-tier wrestler who ended up needing stitches, I doubt the outcry would be even comparable to the one ongoing at the moment.
