In today's Las Vegas Review Journal, Vince McMahon addressed several issues dealing with the XFL. He stated that the league still needs to have some elements that needed attention, but people are too quick to bury it. He went on to say that the WWF was in he XFL for "the long haul" and it takes a while to "build a brand" which he will put in the time needed to do it.

McMahon did admit to trying to run an angle with Jesse Ventura and NY Hitmen coach Rusty Tillman and that it was a mistake. He also spoke about Jim Ross's status with the XFL and said that Ross was replaced as the announcer on the A game because of the wrestling connotation that he brings to the XFL. He wants the XFL to be its own entity.

XFL Stops Going to Extremes

The XFL is going straight.

As the league enters its sixth week tomorrow night, a decision has been made to eliminate most of the shtick coming out of the announcer's booth and replace it with a more traditional football broadcast approach.

On-field cameras and all the microphones will still be a big part of the telecasts. But well-embedded league and industry moles say the halftime look into the cheerleaders locker room, during tomorrow's Orlando-Las Vegas game, will likely be the last salacious WWF-style stunt for the rest of the season.

The sources point to a number of behind-the-scenes moves made by NBC Sports and the WWF to center the broadcasts on pure football, in another attempt to find a formula which will bring the severe ratings declines the XFL has experienced to a halt.

NBC Sports has contemplated bringing in current NFL players as guest analysts. The network engaged in serious talks with Tony Siragusa. The Ravens defensive lineman appeared on NBC's XFL opener, but only to be interviewed during a break-in play. Siragusa weighed NBC's offer and wavered back and forth before deciding — on Monday — not to take the gig.

"The opportunity intrigued him, but after various discussions we both felt the timing was not right to pursue a national TV debut as a guest analyst," said Steve Rosner, Siragusa's marketing agent.

Network executives also had what was characterized as a very "preliminary conversation" with Giants defensive back Jason Sehorn. Sehorn is a close friend of Los Angeles Xtreme quarterback Tommy Maddox, a former teammate of Sehorn's with the Giants.

Matt Vasgersian, who started the season as the XFL's No.1 play-by-play man, only to be demoted to the backup game after week one, will likely move back to the top play-by-play slot. The move might come as early as tomorrow night for NBC's Orlando-Las Vegas telecast.

Jim Ross, the voice of the WWF who replaced Vasgersian, will return to backup game duties. Vasgersian is better suited to provide a straight football play-by-play. While Ross had done some football broadcasting before his WWF days, his voice is too closely associated with wrestling telecasts.

Mike Adamle, who was brought into the booth last week to join Ross and Jesse (The Body) Ventura, will remain in the analyst role. Last week, for the first time since the XFL debuted, Adamle — who played in the NFL for seven seasons — was able to interpret the dialogue between the offensive coordinator and quarterback, which viewers hear live during XFL telecasts. Adamle's translations filled in a huge gap that existed during the first four weeks of play.

While much of the media has predicted the XFL will be dead on NBC after this season, network brass is already looking ahead to the possibility of a second season. Adamle's move into the booth offers a signal. If the XFL returns to the Peacock for year two, Gov. Ventura won't have to explain his weekend absence to legislators in Minnesota. Ventura will not be invited back to the XFL broadcast booth.

All XFL broadcasters (NBC, TNN, UPN) have been put on notice that there could be more booth shakeups before the season ends.

Changing the focus coming out of the broadcast booth likely won't stop the XFL's ratings slide.

Once viewers have left the barn, it's hard to get them back. Straight football talk is no substitute for the lack of offensive fireworks the XFL has experienced over its first five weeks.

But the mere fact that NBC Sports is looking to change the broadcast focus, shows NBC Sports boss Dick Ebersol and WWF impresario Vince McMahon are not throwing in the towel.

They are not sitting back, taking a bashing from numerous parties, including former network sports executives who have suddenly become geniuses skilled in the art of piling on, without trying to find a formula that clicks with viewers.

Now, finding that formula is the longest of shots. In the XFL the only certainty is uncertainty. This new strategy could easily give way to another one.

For in the XFL, nothing is set in stone.
