It's gonna be the rumble heard 'round the world.
The World Wrestling Federation is buying World Championship Wrestling, its competitor for almost 20 years, after the struggling franchise's owner decided to take it off the air last week.

"This acquisition is the perfect creative and business catalyst for our company," WWFE CEO Linda McMahon said. "The incendiary mix of World Wrestling Federation and WCW personalities potentially creates intriguing story lines that will attract a larger fan base for the benefit of our advertisers and business partners."

Among the names rumored to muscle their way into the new wrestling franchise is Hulk Hogan. Hogan rose to fame with the WWF but left for the WCW for more money in the 1990s. He has been off the air since July and has sued Turner alleging defamation.

"We think the WCW has found its proper home now," Turner spokesman Jim Weiss said.

Goldberg, the wild-eyed, bald, goatee-wearing, WCW star could face the WWF's champion "Stone Cold" Steve Austin, also a wild-eyed, bald, goatee-wearing wrestler. The WWF said it would start to "cross-brand story lines" soon.

Wade Keller, editor of the Pro Wrestling Torch, a pro wrestling newsletter, said the deal will help the WWF freshen-up its story lines and inject new talent.

Throughout the 1980s and '90s, the WWF and WCW exchanged punches for ratings and fans. WCW took the ratings lead in the mid-'90s, but in the late 1990s, as the WCW's top performers started showing a little gray, the WWF began to regularly beat up Turner.

Financial details of the transaction were not disclosed, but McMahon said the price of the show (which lost $80 million last year) "was not an important part" of the deal. The WCW's prime asset is its extensive film library dating to the 1970s, merchandise and some production and exercise equipment.

Fusient Media Ventures was aiming to purchase the WCW, but the company stepped out of line when Turner Broadcasting decided it wanted to attract a more upscale audience and dropped wrestling on its TNT and TBS networks.
