This could become big news as far as the future of WWF Smackdown! on UPN is concerned. Variety reports that the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) will consider easing up on the television network ownership rule that prohibits one of the "big four" networks (ABC, CBS, NBC and FOX) from owning a second, smaller network. A hearing is scheduled for April 19, during which the FCC will address this issue. Viacom currently has until May 4 to decide the fate of UPN, because Viacom merged with CBS last year and due to the current network ownership rule, Viacom can't own both networks. Viacom hasn't found an interested buyer for UPN, so the conglomerate's only other option would be to shut UPN down, but Viacom's argument is that the loss of UPN would hurt television diversity, since UPN targets minority demographics. The FCC has acknowledged Viacom's argument and obviously must agree since they're now considering relaxing that rule. We'll know more after April 19.

Should Viacom be forced to shut down UPN, the future of Smackdown! is uncertain. I can't see Viacom giving the WWF a weekly show on the powerhouse that is CBS (although it would be enormous for the wrestling business), and although Viacom would likely offer the WWF another timeslot on one of its cable networks, any cable timeslot is less attractive than a network timeslot.

Ticketmaster.com has listed the first "new" WCW TV taping for Trenton NJ on May 9. Interestingly, the event is listed under more info as "Shane McMahon presents WCW" which might not bode well for WCW's long term viability. Tickets go on sale on April 14.

Following the loss of WCW to the WWF, it appears that Fusient Media is now trying to do the same thing to the WWF. Fusient is the latest name to be involved in talks to buy Artisan Entertainment. The WWF has also been interesting in buying the film company. Artisan is the studio behind "Blair Witch Project" among other films.

I'm not sure that one of the big three (NBC,CBS,ABC) is ready for Smackdown on primetime. The last wrestling on NBC I believe was the good old Saturday nights main event, and wrestling has sure changed since those days.

I am pretty sure that NBC will have a new Saturday night time slot open. That would be perfect. A throwback to the old Saturday Night Main Event.

With the WWF ratings as high as they are, if UPN shuts down, I'm sure another network would be reletively quick to pick it up, even though the time slot would never be as good.

God I hope we don't lose upn...while i would love to see nbc give up the saturday night slot, we all know that won't happen. not if vince is involved, they have a sour feeling from him. lets just have viacom buy someone on the fcc to convince them to change the rules, they have the cash to do that!
