WORD ON BIG NAMES FOR THE NEW WCW

by Dave Scherer Updated: 5/21/2001 11:32:57 AM

In his Ross Report on Friday, Jim Ross made mention of having some unexpected people sign deals with WCW very soon. Two names strongly making the rounds as candidates are Rob Van Dam and Buff Bagwell.

Van Dam has been in negotiations with Ross lately. I think he would be a perfect guy to come into WCW due to his name value as one of the top guys from ECW. While that may not mean much for a guy coming in for the WWF, it would mean more for the new WCW, especially given the absence of people like Goldberg and Sting at the top of the company. Plus, Rob would, at least in theory, be familiar to the ECW audience that used to watch the show on TNN as well. And, no one has ever questioned Van Dam's work ethic.

As you probably remember, Bagwell's WCW contract expired earlier this year. He then signed a two month extension. With that expired, he becomes one of the big WCW names that the WWF can go after for WCW. I think Buff would be a good signing for the WWF as well. While he has had some attitude problems in the past in WCW, I think that at this point everyone from the old WCW deserves at least one more chance considering the fact that WCW was run so poorly and actually created an environment that encouraged poor behavior from its wrestlers.

Other names that are being talked about, with less certainty, as to possibly coming into WCW are Dallas Page and Booker T. Both men are still signed to deals with AOL Time Warner, and those would obviously have to be bought out first. Rumors have been going around the business for weeks that Page not only wants a buyout, but has initiated it with AOL management. As I have said before, at his age, the future is now and he needs to get back in the ring as soon as he can because no matter how good of shape he is in, time is still marching forward on him. The WWF has wanted Booker T from the beginning as well. I have not heard either way as to whether he has had any movement on his contract, but the WWF wants him to be in WCW, for sure.
