KING OF THE RING: END OF AN ERA

by Aaron Casey 6/15/2001 11:23:00 AM

The WWF just destroyed yet another legacy with their most recent KOTR announcement.

The final eight competitors who qualified won’t have to win three PPV matches in order to be crowned King.

The quarterfinal matches start this coming Monday on Raw. And with the start of the quarterfinal matches comes the end of an era.

One of the things that made the King Of The Ring tourney so exciting was the fact that the winner would have to win three matches in one night to be declared that year’s King. Well, unless you’re Mabel and can’t work three times so they have HBK go to a time limit draw and kill the entire thing… oh well, I digress.

Now the winner will have to win two matches maximum, and I think it will impact the importance of a tournament that was at one time a hot PPV attraction.

The WWF had a great thing going. They had the ability to really make a statement with this year’s tournament. And they dropped the ball.

In the first formative years of the tournament, the WWF would fill the tournament with bigger names. The tourney was the most important thing on the show and everyone knew it.

Now, guys with one television match like Tajiri somehow make the cut. I’m not saying he will give a bad performance. But it makes the importance of guys trying to win the KOTR seem less as each year progresses.

This year’s tournament should have included the Undertaker. The stalker could’ve debuted at the show and interfered in the match if necessary to push their feud along, but he would have given the tourney some star power even if he was eliminated in the opening round.

In years past, the WWF used to have a ton of qualifying matches, as it gave the feel that everyone on the entire roster wanted to get a piece of the action. While I’m not saying I want to see Funaki versus Brooklyn Brawler in a qualifying match, I do think they were on to something years prior when everyone was scrambling to qualify.

Let us hope that this year’s KOTR tells a better story in the ring than it has on paper thus far.

Teen, I have a theory after reading your update...perhaps they are going to less matches for each on the pay per view based on having Kurt go for the crown in the finals at the ppv. If he were to go to the finals, and fight shane that would be 4 matches in one night for him. Not very likely, but it is food for thought.

My apologies to DEKE, i cant believe i was wrong about this, and I cant believe the WWF is doing this dumb shit. They are just starting to get on a roll, and they go out and destroy the ppv just to get an extra .2 ratings jump on that miserable station TNN. That is bullshit.

Yea i be taking that zoloff, but thaz jus keepin me from killin y'all.
I have come here to kick ass and chew bubblegum, and I'm all out of bubblegum. :)

Skitch, I agree with you. I bet that is why they did it. I totally see Kurt Angle vs Jeff hardy in the Finals and Shane's WCW cosing him the King of the Ring.

-I would say Have Rob Van Dam come out during his King of the Ring match and cost him. Than later in the night when he is facing Shane, Have DDP or Booker come out and cost him that match.

Remember next month's PPV is Invasion, so their has to be a big WCW influence involved in the King of the Ring.

Would also love to see a match with Jeff Hardy and Tajiri at King of the Ring or most likely Raw this week as I do not see Tajiri making the Final 4.

What 4 do you think will not make the PPV? Perry Saturn will definitely be one. Big SHow should get elimanated before that. I also see Edge vs Christian on Raw or Smackdown and one of them being eliminated. The 4th, I have no idea, probably tajiri.

Angle, Rhyno, and Jeff Hardy are most likely defintites and I would say Christian as well.
