A BADSTREET PERSPECTIVE: REMEMBERING TERRY GORDY

by Dave Whitaker 7/17/2001 11:28:00 AM

It's a dark night here on Badstreet as I write this. And not just because I'm really disgusted with the current "invasion" going on in the WWF. It's a really dark night tonight, because one of the original Fabulous Freebirds, Terry "Bam Bam" Gordy is no longer with us.
I can't say I've watched Terry Gordy through every part of his career. Because when he first wrestled in Georgia with the 'Birds, I was too young to remember him. I also didn't have access to World Class Wrestling and the AWA until the mid to late 80's. And I could only read about some of the things he did in Japan. But I do have many memories of "Bam Bam." Many memories of a man who was the Freebirds enforcer, as well as a charismatic personality in his own right.

Some of my best memories come from the days Terry, Michael, and Buddy were in Bill Watts UWF. That was when Terry got one of his first real pushes as a singles star, being the UWF champion. He won the title in a tournament beating "Hacksaw" Jim Duggan in the final. He was a heel. But he could wrestle. He and "Dr. Death" Steve Williams had some great matches. And Terry could wrestle, or he could brawl. I even saw him take to the air occasionally.

And what was even more amazing was how he and the other Freebirds so easily turned face when they got into a feud with Devastation Incorporated. Terry went from a big man who beat up Ted DiBiase and Steve Williams to a big man who beat up guys like One Man Gang, "Wild" Bill Irwin and The Angel of Death. He didn't change his style, just who he wrestled. But every time "Badstreet USA" or "The boys are back in town" played, the fans went wild.

One of the biggest rivals of the Freebirds during the 80's were the Von Erichs. One of the biggest changes came one year when Michael Hayes was performing a concert at the Sportatorium in Dallas. They did an angle where Hayes asked Kerry to come on stage, then Buddy Roberts wound up hitting Michael by mistake. Kerry Von Erich and Michael Hayes were feuding with "The New Freebirds" of Buddy Roberts, Angel of Death, and Iceman King Parsons.

You may be asking what this has to do with Terry Gordy. Well, Terry came to World Class. He at first joined up with Buddy Roberts, even costing Kerry the belt in an infamous match where they had the lights go out. But that didn't last. Because in a later cage match, something like tower of doom, Angel and Terry Gordy had a falling out. I'm sorry, I don't remember the details. But I remember Angel (who remember had been a rival of the 'Birds) and Terry fighting, and Buddy Roberts and Iceman attacking Terry. Kerry Von Erich rescued Terry, and those two guys shook hands. Now at this time, that was something special. Because it meant Michael Hayes AND Terry Gordy, the man who had been sent to kick the crap out of the Von Erichs so many times, was making peace with a Von Erich.

I could go on about memories of Terry in WCW, but I want to talk about one of Terry's matches in ECW. You remember it, it was the battle of the Bam Bam's. He against Bam Bam Bigelow. You could tell Terry wasn't in the best of shape then. But I remember seeing a man giving it his best, and even though he was there for a specific purpose, not being too proud to job cleanly to the younger Bigelow. But I'm not going to sit here and say I liked seeing Terry back because of the match. I liked seeing him back because one of the Freebirds had returned.

I'll always remember Terry Gordy. As a man who went into the ring and kicked butt. He wasn't the best talker in the world, but in his day, he could beat you with wrestling, make you submit, or beat you with brawling. He was the Freebirds enforcer. And he will be missed by me, and anyone who was ever a fan of the Fabulous Freebirds

This is really sad news. Terry wasn't always the most athletic, but just the memories of him being the enforcer of the first real wrestling crew makes a life long wrestling fan like me pause for a moment. I think the Freebirds predated the Original horsemen. I've seen Terry in ECW and on a few independent shows a few years ago, and even though they probably weren't his best performances, I appreciate what memories he has left me.

I just remember the Freebirds vs. The Von Erichs from the 80's. I used to read about that fued all the time when I was a kid. Bam Bam was a good talent who was great at putting people over all the time. It is just a shame thst he died at such a young age and that he was never really given a chance to shine in a major organization in the North east for the Freebirds always could put on a great show.

And Thats The Bottom Line.....

This is really a damn shame. I will try not to remember the rundown and beaten Gordy from the past few years and the one I read about in "Have a Nice Day" but instead the Gordy that kicked ass and really scared the crap out of me when I was 6 years old. He just had that way about him that he would kick the shit out of you if you looked at him the wrong way. The Freebirds of World Class were one of the best teams ever. I still get pumped up hearing "Freebird". I always thought that the JD swilling Buddy Roberts would be the first one to go. Just a sad day.

But there's also this: there are over 5,000 men in this city, who know that being a policeman is an endless, glamourless, thankless job that's gotta be done.

I know it, too, and I'm damn glad to be one of them."
