I just saw on 1wrestling.com that MECW's first show on Saturday, August 11 at the ECW Arena in Philly will be free! Logistics made selling tickets nearly impossible and they don't want fans to have to wait outside in the heat for a long time to get in

"For sure" names on the card include: Curt Hennig (MECW champ), Sandman, Buff Bagwell, Public Enemy (MECW tag champs), Jasmin St Clair and Blue Meanie, Chris Chetti, Danny Doring, Joey Matthews and Christian York, Steve Corino, Sabu, Francine, and Simon Diamond & Dawn Marie.

Looks like I may take a trip to Philly to see what's up this weekend.

Finally some real competition to the WWF, hopeflly some of these guys will make the WWF sorry that they werent signed. I like the idea of a free show for the first one, although it should only be a 1 time thing.

Gah...somehow I doubt Buff will be one of those guys. What does the ME in MECW stand for anyway?

Anyone notice that when Banger double posts, no one complains? ;)

Main Event...i dont know what the fans will chant when someone does a sick move. chanting "MECW" doesnt sound right. I guess sticking to the "Holy Shit" saying is good enough.

I think the Me is fitting for some of the guys they are signing because that's all those guys are about themselves. Look Bagwell, Hennig. Sign Hogan, Nash and Goldberg and you would have the biggest bunch of egos in the history of wrestling.

Just wanted to share some thoughts & observations.

Arriving at the show, I was given one of those raffle type ticket things. A couple hours later, a guy comes along and tells everyone that we must line up in single file (ha!) in our tickets' numerical order (triple HA! especially when dealing with some of the not-so-swift members of the audience, who were under the mistaken assumption that 149 comes before 50 and other similar mix-ups). Whatever happened to "Hell, it's a free show, line up & sit wherever the hell you want?" Thanks to this arrangement, I ended up in the front row next to my least favorite kind of wrestling fan: the forty-something filthy, grossly overweight, smelly white male who believes wrestling is not predetermined, and will loudly make idiotic comments to me throughout the show, despite my pleas of "That's nice, sir, but I'm trying to watch this," "Sir, please quiet down," and "Asshole, shut the fuck up!"

The show kicks off with WCW's Dave Penzer introducing longtime ECW ring announcers Bob Artese and Steve "Horshack" De Angelis. He then introduces Joel Gertner, who has lost a lot of weight and looks pretty damn good. Joel goes into his shtick, but is interrupted by a much thinner Lou E. Dangerously (did EVERYONE in wrestling go on the Blue Meanie weight loss plan?) and his Rocky Maivia clone bodyguard. In some roundabout way that I can't recall right now, this leads up to New Jack vs Tony DeVito, with blood aplenty, smashing, guitar, staples, yada yada yada. Didn't do much for me until New Jack almost hit me with a chair. New Jack wins, then proclaims that someone's getting killed tonight.

Next match saw Danny Doring & Chris Chetti (still with the bleach blonde hair, but reverting back somewhat to his Ricky Martin gimmick) go over Christian York & Joey Matthews. Doring in hot pants = happy Peach. Doring with hot pants pulled down to his knees = blissfully ecstatic Peach. :) Lots of good (but not really great) wrestling in this one.

Steve Corino and Jack Victory come out to a huge ovation. Corino thanks the fans, but wonders if his life is really going so badly that he has to return to the ECW Arena. At that point, music hits, and Buff Bagwell comes to the ring. Buff received X-Pac heat, as in "Die, bitch, die." The fans immediately start chanting "You got fired!" and "Where's your mom?" God, I've missed ECW fans. After some back & forth trash talking, Corino & Victory jump Bagwell, and beat him down. This turns into a match between Victory & Bagwell, which thankfully ended quickly when Corino mistakenly threw baby powder in Victory's eyes. During this match, Francine came to ringside and made notes; she would do this most of the evening. I'm somewhat miffed she ignored my challenge to a "Queen of Tic Tac Toe" match.

Hot Commodity (Julio Dinero & Chris Hamerick) over Prince Justice & Rob Williams, who looked like a Scotty Flamingo clone and the Big Show with man-boobs. Great stuff from Dinero & Hamerick, as usual.

Curt Hennig (billed as MECW champion) over Wildcat Chris Harris in less than 3 minutes. Crowd goes wild for the pre-match chewing gum swat and the Perfect Plex. Francine's notes on this one included "Harris-nice abs." I wholeheartedly agreed.

Public Enemy (why the FUCK are these guys MECW champs?) over the FBI sans Big Sal (boo!) after they powerbomb Tony Marmaluke through double tables...well, actually one table collapsed right after they laid him on it, so half the work was already basically done. Johnny Grunge looked like a competitor in the Mark Madden lookalike contest.

Simon Diamond (w/Dawn Marie) over The Blue Meanie (w/Jasmin St. Claire) in a match that featured Dawn Marie's ass cheeks and the obligatory cat fight, which saw Jasmin dominate. Simon was surprisingly treated as the face in this match; fans just don't seem to be into the slimmer, mat wrestling Meanie, which is a shame. He did successfully pull off a Meaniesault for old times sake.

Crowbar over Roadkill (WTF?) and Billy Reil in a triple threat match. In the beginning the crowd seemed pro-Roadkill, but as the match went on the cheers seemed to sway more in favor of Reil. Other than Roadkill not really being able to keep up with the two smaller, quicker participants, not too much to complain about in this one. Reil received a standing ovation for his efforts.

Mike Rotundo (in full IRS mode, which I popped hugely for) and Rockin' Rebel (reportedly subbing for a protesting Barry Windham) over Johnny Hot Body & Gary Wolfe in another three minute squash. Body & Wolfe were doing a horrific gladiators gimmick. They spent the entire match wrestling in what were essentially pleated miniskirts; I can't confirm this, but I've heard reports that a local high school had reported some of their larger cheerleader outfits were missing. This match provoked the question of the night from a friend of mine: "So, does this mean that Rebel's now part of the Varsity Club?"

Finally, in a Stairway to Hell (AKA ladder) match for the Alternative Pro Wrestling championship, Sabu (w/ Bill Alfonso) defeats the Sandman, who lost after his surprise cornerman, Tod Gordon, shoved him off the ladder through a table sitting outside the ring. Gordon tells Sandman that he will never be Gordon's boss. Not a mat classic, of course, but pretty good for what it was.

All in all, the evening wasn't too bad, but I hope in the future the guys running the company organize their shit a little better. If I was Dave Meltzer (perish the thought!) I'd give this evening 3 out of five stars; good for what it was, but could have been much, much better.

Peach....

Thanks for the great rundown on the evening, seems like a pretty damn good first (& free) show. Can't wait to catch these guys (hopefully) at a later show.

My only question at this point would be.....will we EVER see Shane Douglas again? He would work so well in the present Invasion angle (they could use another headliner-name guy, Booker is not pulling it off), but I know he has real heat with Vinny Mac and probably dozens of others backstage. But when he can't even get (or is too proud to take) a gig in an upstart promotion, what the hell is he up to instead?

Last I heard, (and this was a while ago) Shane was in negotiations with XPW, the hardcore fed out in CA. I wouldn't count on him coming to the WWF anytime soon, given the fact that two former bosses that he's trashed in the past aren't likely to welcome him with open arms. He's always said that if he couldn't get a job wrestling, he'd just go back to teaching instead.

I would love to see Dean Douglas back in the WWF. He would be monster heel for the ECW Alliance. Could be huge especially when they break away from the WWF and try to run separately. You can't have ECW without the Franchise.
