I can't believe it, but the world wildlife fund has won! They are forcing the WWF to change their web address, and other such things...I got this from Wrestline.com

- There are, as you might know, two different "WWFs" operating in the world... the World Wrestling Federation and the World Wildlife Fund. And today, the Wildlife Fund delivered a stiff blow to OUR WWF.

A judge ruled that the World Wrestling Federation's use of the WWF name and logo violates a 1994 agreement between the two parties that allowed the World Wrestling Federation to use the initials in a limited capacity to promote their product. The argument is that wrestling's expansion over the last 7 years has meant heavy marketing of the WWF name by the World Wrestling Federation, which to the Wildlife Fund's way of thinking is creating some sort of confusion in the marketplace.

What kind of moron would confuse a wrestling company and a wildlife fund is beyond me, but for the time being, we've gotta accept the thesis. They did, afterall, win the court case.

The judge ruled that the World Wrestling Federation can still have limited use of the WWF initials in the US. [Overseas operations, I gather, are not affected, because the World Wildlife Fund is known as the "Worldwide Fund for Nature" in every other country in the world.] But most importantly, the judge ruled that the World Wrestling Federation must shut down its wwf.com domain (because of its similarity to the wildlife fund's wwf.org domain).

As of this writing (Friday 4pm), the WWF.com website remains operational, with absolutely no mention of any impending shut-downs or changes.

The World Wrestling Federation is quoted in wire reports as saying they will appeal the decision, although others (also quoted in the column) categorize their arguments as very weak.

I have no idea what constitutes "limited domestic use," or how this will otherwise affect our WWF's operations. From the website side of things, it'd be real easy to pick up another domain (like wwfwrestling.com), but if it's decided that the whole name and logo have got to go, the Fed's in trouble.

Now, maybe I'm just an idiot wrestling fan, but this is one case where I say "Screw the letter of the law"... the spirit of things is not to let one party unjustly take advantage of another. And if the Wildlife Fund people honestly think they're in any way being damaged by the wrestling company's use of the same initials -- if they think the two are in any way capable of being confused with one another -- well, then, let's just say I'd like to see their proof...

In addition to the World Wrestling Federation's promise of an appeal, another court date in October is scheduled to determine what damages WWFE is going to be held accountable for.

This is ridiculous. What about their stock symbol. They were on Nasdaq known as WWFE, and they switched to the NYSE and became WWF? Do they have to take teh symbol off all of their merchandising and their tv shows.

What kind of stupid ass judge is this.

This judge just may have replaced Judge Ito as dumbest judge ever. Who the hell would send the world wrestling federation donations thinking they were the world wildlife fund.

WWF potentially pinned by London court ruling
By Jesse Hiestand and Jim McConville

LOS ANGELES (The Hollywood Reporter) --- World Wrestling Federation Entertainment Inc. would have to abandon the initials WWF and give up its Web address under a London court ruling that found the company behind the Rock breached a 1994 agreement to avoid confusion with the World Wildlife Fund.

Vince McMahon's WWFE plans to appeal Friday's judgment by Justice Robin Jacob, which if upheld could cost the Stamford, Conn., company $50 million by its own estimate to change its logo and www.wwf.com Web site.

"There are limited exceptions, but the agreement prevents the federation from using its Web site address or from selling from its Web site goods marked WWF," Jacob said in his decision. "The agreement very significantly impinges on what the federation (is) doing now."

Jacob said the restrain on WWFE's trade was justified because the wildlife fund could lose out on donations if people wrongly concluded that the respected environmental group had suddenly detoured into the realm of "WWF Smackdown!"

The judgment "means our name and reputation are upheld," wildlife fund spokesman Anita Neville told the Associated Press. She could not be reached for further comment.

WWFE attorney Jerry McDevitt said the company will operate as usual as it prepares to appeal the decision in the High Court of London on Oct. 1. The decision comes as WWFE embarks on a major retail push in the United States and continued international expansion.

The wildlife fund, with operations in more than 100 countries and international headquarters in Gland, Switzerland, originally complained about the wrestlers' use of WWF in 1989, a decade after it was first used by the entertainers. WWFE agreed not to use the initials in a certain typeface unless accompanied by its logo or in the context of its magazine.

The spat grew more heated as WWFE grew more popular in international markets, leading to a 1994 agreement to not use the initials in print, including on magazines, merchandise and home videos, McDevitt said.

McMahon moved to modernize the logo in 1998 with the "Ws" stacked next to the "F" and a "scratched" look. The company argued that its agreement with the wildlife fund did not address use of the initials WWF on the Internet, where the fund's site is located at www.wwf.org.

"There's never been any evidence that there's ever been one misdirected donation," McDevitt said. "We have a couple of million people a month come to our site, and there's no confusion over who we are."

McDevitt said WWFE will argue that the restrain on trade is unreasonable or that this matter deserves a trial where witnesses can be cross-examined.

(Jesse Hiestand reported from Los Angeles; Jim McConville reported from New York.)

They're trying to stop WWF (ours) using the initials in england as well even though the World Wildlife Fund are officially known here as The World Wide Fund For Nature (WWFFN) so it wouldnt even get confused.
