Some of my favorite albums have been overlooked the time they first came out. Here are my 3 favorite underrated albums:

1. Nine Inch Nails - The Fragile
2. Pearl Jam - No Code
3. Weezer - Pinkerton

I'm sure there are more people who know what I'm talking about.

Ummmmm BUZZZZZZT. Wrong, try again dumbass. It didnt get airplay, but it certainly wasnt overlooked when it came out. Many industry people said that it was one of, if not the best album of the year.

Born Again Savage by Little Steven.

This CD got great reviews from everyone who's heard it, yet very few people know about it.

Maynard, the thread title is Underrated / Overlooked Albums. If it didn't get much radio airplay then... thus then in-byfacto it was "Overlooked" if only in that way and not by Fans/critics.

My top 3 will be a combination of spitfire (Obscure) and njsawn (all 1 band)...

Matthew Ryan - Mayday(1997) Mayday Review

Matthew Ryan - East Autumn Grin(2000) East Autumn Grin Review

Matthew Ryan - Concussion(2001) Concussion Review This cd is being hailed as the next "Nebraska" and I am sure Froy can attest to "Nebraska" being underrated and/or overlooked in one form or another.

Thanks for the links Slash, I dl'd a few clips (see, if you recommend something I'll actually listen to it ;) ) ...really nice!

But as performers like Dylan, Petty and Mellencamp drift -- loudly -- into maturity, they leave the changing tradition of American rock music to songwriters like Ryan.

Definitely sounds like it!

Adding to my list: anything done by Ben Harper is completely underrated. He has the soul that Lenny Kravitz only wishes he could find.

Sure...but no one will check out my favorite band :(

Here's what allmusic.com has to say about them:
quote:

After creating a classic with their second album, Blues for the Red Sun, desert metal gods Kyuss faced the unenviable task of delivering the goods once again for a new label, Elektra Records. And they almost pulled it off with 1994's stellar, Sky Valley. The album's 13 songs are divided into three "suites" which fully display the band's impressive creative range, from furious metal to psychedelic grooves, and anything in between. The first and most consistent of these suites starts with the huge guitar riff of "Gardenia" (which resembles molten lava flowing down the side a volcano), continues into the moody space jam instrumental "Asteroid," and culminates in the strangely titled yet superbly diverse "Supa Scoopa and Mighty Scoop." Other highlights include the solid thrashing of "100 Degrees," the prog-rock instrumental "Whitewater," and the rather mellow (for Kyuss standards) "Demon Cleaner." But no song exemplefies the Kyuss sound as well as the aptly-titled "Odyssey," which opens suite number three and provides a veritable blue-print of the band's unique combination of ingredients. The track begins wirh a cryptic melody, explodes into a ferocious riff, glides into a psychedelic bridge, then returns to full-throttle for its conclusion.

Spit, I promised I would check them out "Kyuss" so I am actually going to buy the cd that you recommended "Kyuss (Welcome to Sky Valley)" as I hope you may support Ryan.

Everyone else, thank you for allowing me hi-jack this thread, not like you had a say anyway ;)

Nebraska is the most under-appreciated album of the last 25 years. It's one of the truest albums ever written. It's absolute humanity in its rawest form. Whether you are a Springsteen fan or not, this album ranks as one of the masterpieces of American song-writing. If you could put the Grapes of Wrath on CD, it would be Nebraska.
