In September of 1993 a small show started on FOX Friday night, a show that conceivably should have failed before the midseason. It started with nothing more than small following but became THE dork show of the mid 90s. The show was about a man's quest, one assigned to keep him harnessed to the world of science, a government of nameless men who had no loyalty and was an intelligently done show with real main characters, fascinating supporting characters and intriguing plotlines for standalone and the uniting mythology episode. That show was "The X-Files" and it ended up as a bigger hit than FOX ever expected with great significant episodes were balanced with fine stand alone ones, blending comedy, drama and the supernatural. And it really was one hell of a good show.

It's easy to harp on the bad moments, the awful seasons they churned out over the past five or so years. The show obviously should have been cancelled years ago when it became first apparent that Chris Carter was a nothing but an adequate storyteller who couldn't see for the long term. He kept adding on plotlines without closing others (clones shapeshifters, super soldiers, black oil, etc.) and didn't seem to care. By the end it came to the point where they just thought saying "oh that wasn't real what you saw" as a credible excuse. Hell the sister plotline was resolved with her in an intergalactic game of ring around the rosey- AWFUL!

Yet for a few years (maybe three or four) it was a good show, a cultural phenomenon. It still had a chance of developing successfully and intelligently. The characters and the writers weren't exhausted. And at least the final season proved to us that Robert Patrick is actually a pretty good actor who would definitely get noticed if his cop character were any other cop show.

Starting tonight and continuing for the next four weeks the final four episodes of X-Files will be on FOX Sunday nights in what is called “The X-Files: Endgame” allegedly planning to tie up the loose ends that have been created over the years. Now, X-Files is thankfully being put to rest years after it was due but for a couple of years at least, it was a great sci-fi drama that was better than most any other long running show on TV today.

...and there's always the second feature film coming out in 2003/4

It always was an enjoyable series, but this year I hadn't watched any episodes until now...

The writers had an ability to weave a semi-believable and interesting main storyline (until they backed themselves into a corner), and also to write some side diversion episodes which could range from truly freaky to absurd.
(How many series can truly use the talents of Charles Nelson Reilly :) )
Mulder & Scully became characters who people cared about, and they couldn't make the transition to new focal points.

Once they started focusing on the aliens and whole government cover-up, the show went downhill. The X-files was best when they investigated a new weird thing every week. Too...much...plot..can't...pay...attention... :-D

I always liked the show.

Whatever happened to that "Lone Gunmen" spinoff? I liked it. I may have been the only one, but I liked it.

Yup, I'm interested to see how they take this
thing home. I watched the Lone Gunmen die last
week and when they all were touching hands through
the glass after the biological agent had released
itself, I found myself doing the old lady from the
"Bill is dead" bit..."nooo, oh noooo". I thought
that was good TV (I'm glad they got an Arlington
Cemetary burial:))
Have tonight's on tape, gonna watch now.

ps - I know someone's said this to you before,

I think Moulder leaving the show for some of die hard fans like I use to be just end the series then. I just could not get into Terminator 2 boy, and while attractive new female agent. Fox is suppose to come back for the last episodes.

Actually they goverment cover-up was the main stroy from the beginning, but I know what you mean - those weird stories were the side diversions that I was referring to, along the lines of "Kolchak, the Night Stalker", whom they paid tribut to.

Chris Carter & group usually had a little twist of humor - for example, the episode before the final 3 was called "Jump The Shark".

This is the show, along with The Simpsons, that made Fox into a real network.

I think two shows that stand out for me is the one about the freak show, and the one with the phyic murders.

The final episode airs tomorrow at 8, it's two hours that should rap things up...at least until the next movie. The lead up episodes haven't been great. The death of the Gunmen were disappointing considing they were great characters whose deaths should have been more related to the continuing mythology. Further episodes have worked to ending plotends but nothing to the excitement of earlier episodes. Having Elwes as Luke's killer was lame and the Brady episode also didn't contribute much or have the goodness of prior stand alones.

Tomorrow it's a 2 hour finale and it's against some MAJOR competition (another NBC outtakes special and the Cosbey reunion; Survivor finale) but I am awaiting this, not so anxiously but I am waiting and who knows whether or not it is going to work out but here's hoping.

I will watch tonight. It'll be the first time I've watched the show in about 3 years, but I'm looking forward to it. It will be interesting to see how they wrap up some of the loose ends that have going on for almost a decade now.

I stopped watching when the show switched to Sundays...I never felt like watching Simpsons and then switch totally and watch a serious show...Besides, it was getting to a point where missing one episode meant loosing out on the small puzzle-piece that 2 years later would play an important role.

It ended with Mulder and Scully in a hotel room late at night in a Roswell motel room. Mulder is talking about how he failed because he never got his sister back, etc. and Scully said he succeeded and that the point of everything is to have hope an dthat the dead speak to us to help us survive.

Don't listen to Ikea, what does he know about tv?

He's right on the part about Mulder and Scully going back to a hotel. But as Scully was in the shower, Mulder was visited his dead sister and she told him the truth about himself. Just then his skin started to peel back to reveal his true identity. He was one of those faceless dudes. He then went into the shower and snapped Scully in half. Sad ending.

I enjoyed the flashbacks, but I agree, the ending was a big let down.

It just went to show however, that it didn't matter that I missed the last three seasons, it seemed to be picked right up where they left off back when I stopped watching.

I have to agree with Froy the ending was a big let down. i though the final X-Files was good in some parts, i enjoyed the part the helicopters shooting the missles and blowing up the place.

It was about time the show should have ended last year. I was a fan until the last couple of seasons but the last show wasn't that bad. Who know another movie might be coming soon
