Veteran prog-rock act Jethro Tull is readying for a massive world tour that will get underway on May 22 in Germany. The outing is scheduled to touch down in 16 countries--including a summer run through the U.S.--and dates are planned through early December.

In a letter posted on the group's official website, band co-founder Ian Anderson explained that the group's 2001 touring plans did not originally include a U.S. leg.

"Really, we wanted to stay out of the US this year but were tempted by a few different venues and cities as well as a few old and recent favourites," Anderson wrote. "The choice of the relatively few US shows is based on keeping out of most of the metropolitan centres and concentrating on the suburbs and the outlying areas together with a few festivals in far away places!"

Anderson added that the group will return to North America in 2002 for a tour that will run from "Coast to coast, up and down, diagonally and back to front."

The upcoming tour will support Jethro Tull's forthcoming compilation album, "The Very Best of Jethro Tull" (EMI), which is set for release in Europe on May 14, and in the U.S. "soon after," according Anderson's letter. The album will feature 20 of the band's previously released songs, all digitally remastered in 24-bit resolution.

Jethro Tull's most recent studio album is 1999's "J-Tull Dot Com" (Fuel 2000). The British group's most commercially successful U.S. release is 1971's "Aqualung" (Chrysalis), which has been certified triple-platinum. The album's title track was a Top 10 hit.
