Many may not like his voice, but looking at this historically, one could argue that Bob Dylan is one of the best to have ever provided the masses with songs. While I'm at it, let's include the staying power of a Lennon/McCartney collaboration, as evidenced by the sale of the "1" collection. The Jagger/Richards duo didn't do a shabby job either. These artists are at the top of the list as having moved, and influenced more people than most...naturally, there are additional artists to include...

I have to agree with you Rommel on the Lennon/McCartney and Jagger/Richards duos. Keeping with your classic rock direction, I think you can add Pete Townshend and Page/Plant to the list as well.

Hands down it goes to Springsteen. But there are other greats like Pete Townshend, Neil Young, Roger Waters, Bob Dylan, etc. But nobody can capture a moment like Bruce.

I agree with everyone else's choices as well...but my vote goes to Alanis Morissette. She may never be considered one of the greatest song writers when her career is over, but I have never listened to any album and been affected by it the way her's do. It sounds weird, but she writes what I wish I could say.......

Yeah, but Alanis didn't write all of her songs....Glen Ballard had a lot to do with her albums...

As far as contemporary artists go, I think that Dream Theater (Mike Portnoy), Tool (Maynard), Ben Harper, Ani DiFranco, Days of the New (Travis Meeks), and Jerry Cantrell are some of the best. I'll think of more later.

I'm not being rude. You're just insignificant.

Townshend is my #2 pick, I don't think that anybody else writes such poetic yet raw lyrics. You can hear that scathing honest tone and his no-bullshit attitude in every song.

Billy Joel is a great writer, but I don't think he ranks up as highly as some of those previously mentioned. I love his music, but I think he generally lacks deep profoundness.

Profoundness or not, everyone can relate to one of his songs, and to me, that's the point of music. He has a way putting to words feelings we've all had at one point or another. For me, Angry Young Man keeps me in check when I start getting on my soapbox (I actually have a copy of the words printed on my wall in my office), while Pressure was my theme song in college. And I feel sorry for anyone who isn't moved by Goodnight Siagon.

These are just a few examples of how his music's been influential to me.

Townshend, both Mike Portnoy and John Petrucci from Dream Theater, and Lennon & McCartney.

He should have seen it coming, but it happened way too fast

Lennon/McCartney, Jagger/Richards, Townshend, Waters/Gilmour, Page/Plant/Jones (I include Jones because who can forget "No Quarter"), Dylan, Morrison, and Cobain. Yeah, I know I'll get tooled on for including Cobain among those previously mentioned, but despite the lack of musicality, all of his songs are pretty damn intense.

Point well taken Spit....I forgot about Glen Ballard's huge influence. The album she has coming out soon, she did on her own so I guess we will see what the difference is.

I also agree with you on Manyard...and have to throw one out there for Marilyn Manson...

Here's another great one that people seem to be overlooking... Eric Clapton

And to go along with EC, an old bandmate of his....Jack Bruce, who is probably the most underrated writer of his day.

Jack Bruce and Pete Brown wrote some of the classic songs of the rock era...Jack doesn't get a fraction of the credit he's due.

I forgot to mention Paul Simon before. He wrote some great tunes as a solo artist and with Art Garfunkel.
