Is there a virus going around? I checked my mail today just as I do every otherday and there were 25 e-mails and I couldn't open any of them up. All from people I know.

Yeah, I think something has been going around. I'm not sure, but I don't think you can get infected via OA.com mail, unless you paid to get POP access (read your mail via Outlook or Outlook Express).

Click here if you're bored enough to email me.

Couldn't open any of them up?

Explain that better. The email itself wouldn't open up, or the attachment wouldn't open?

If you got an attachment, what was the name of the attached file?

Any email from a 'wmccollum'??

I think it all started with the Declaration of Independence -- the idea that we had the inalienable rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. That pursuit is what took America from the revolution to the computer age in 200 years. But the progress has come at a price. The obvious being the people that were exploited to make it possible; the not so obvious being us, the first group of people that were given no obvious frontiers to conquer. We hear stories that about the good old days that don't seem to apply anymore. It's a generation gap that leaves us without role models. But the bright side is that without role models, there are no roles. Maybe that's what the 60s were all about -- getting rid of the roles. But what do we replace them with? Without any guidance, what do we replace them with? Without any guidance, the choices become overwhelming. Sometimes it just makes everything feel hopeless. So we destroy our bodies in the search of an ideal. Try to salvage relationships that don't work. We feel we must do something, instead of doing something that we feel. It is the prison of self-imposed momentum, and the sad part is that we get used to it. It reminds me of a song I heard the other day. It's called "The Going Nowhere Fast." But the people I have met here have shown me another side of Nowhere. They've pointed out the beautiful irony that stagnation makes it easy to stop and smell the roses, if we just let it. What would we be if we had nothing to rebel against? Well we could finally be ourselves, the first group of people who stopped looking for the answers long enough to appreciate the questions. And all we have to do is to make our own Declaration of Independence. We can embrace the right to life and liberty by simply realizing that happiness exists -- not to pursue, but to accept. After that the only challenge would be to make sure with the rest of our lives that we weren't just another fad. I don't know, it's an idea. What do you think?

I got a freaky email from Av8ter, but since he never sends me anything, I thought it was suspect - looks like it was a worm (I also spoke with him, and he didn't send me anything). Also, my email service was totally down yesterday, but it's back on today - and I didn't have any more weird email than usual.

I think something was definitely going around. I was tempted to call my ISP about it, but I didn't feel like dealing with level 1 techies last night. So far tonight I'm fine, nothing weird coming in.

Looks like something was automatically sent.

These viruses also delete the Sent Items and then Deleted Items...

Sounds like that may be the case here -- which means you got something that Norton's didn't pick up.

I don't know how they are with your ISP, but Staten Island RoadRunner level 1 techs have only one answer any problem you have - "unplug the modem, wait 5 minutes, plug it back in, boot the PC". Most times this does not fix the problem you have (it only worked for me once - most times I have had an issue it was an OS setting that I forgot about). Level 1 techies suck ass - and if you are one for SIRR, then accept my apologies and give me your direct line for the next time I have a problem (which isn't very often - my connection has only crapped out 2 or 3 times in the year and a half that I've had it).

I ran a complete virus scan after Av8ter and I spoke about that email and Norton's found nothing. I think what happened was AOL actually proved useful - the email came to my AOL account as a ZIP file, with 2 MIME files within that. Generally, viruses spread through Outlook can execute simply by opeing the mail - but not on AOL (they come as attachments). I did scan the ZIP, but it came up with nothing - but I deleted it just the same.

And before I get the obligatory "why are you still using AOL" comment from Slash - it's because I don't pay for it :-D It's nice to know people in semi-high places...

The beautiful thing about AOL is they're consistent. Even when it's free it still SUCKS. If you have roadrunner you have no need for that shit service. Not bashing ya or anything Goat, I just HATE AOL with a passion.

I agree it's crap, but it's great for one thing - junk email. I sign up for a lot of gimmick-type shit online to get points and stuff for free DVD's, discount coupons, etc. and the price most people pay is getting slammed with spam because these companies sell your personal info. I know, I can just set up any old email with Hotmail or whatever, but I started out with AOL and once I was able to get it for free, I just kept it around for shits & giggles (like a back-up, esp. when I went broadband).

Not to mention I never really had a problem with it from a software POV. The much older versions used to crash my rig to hell but to be honest, the past two years or so I have had no problems with the AOL stuff on my computer. I'm working on getting my mom a computer, next week probably, so I'm just gonna give her the account to use so she can get the feel for the internet - and then I'll convince her to go with either RR or another dial-up ISP.

My girlfriend and I have been getting bombarded with E-Mails with this virus attatched to it. This one seems to be the new "ILOVEYOU." If you think you've been infected, go to the above link to download the removal tool.
