my cable modem keeps on going on and off. The longest i could have it on was for 24 hours yesterday. I listened to cablevison's advice on how to fix it. It might be a messed up splitter from the tv cable and the internet cable. Every know and then i have to plug and unplug the modem. After a few mins it works, but eventually it will go down again. Esp. when i d/l a lot of music and video files.

Has anyone else expereienced this???

I've burnt out 2 or 3 of those. Sometimes you just have to replace them. Did you call and talk to a tech? Most times they can walk you through. If that doesn't work, they'll send someone to your house.

But is it ART

I used to have Comcast. At random, my connection would go out. And it would be out for like 5 mintes.. i tried everything. Comcast even installed a new line just for the cable modem! but nothing worked. So i just reformated my drive and it seemed to work. It never cut out again.
Moral of the story: maybe it's not Optimum, but your PC.

Try The O&A EZPass Lane. IT'S FUN!

That happens to me sometimes too. Usually when i'm doing alot of downloading and have my feed maxed out. I think it has something to to with bandwith caps. When i'm using the pc 'normal' it never happens.

If the last few days were worse, remember the weather we've been having. There are plenty of places outside that could be causing a drop of signal.

Also, your modem should be on the first split into your house.

Most "techs" that answer the phone there are idiots - it can take 4 or 5 calls to get someone with a clue; when they actually send someone he/she usually is competent.

I just upgraded my cable boxes to digital, and the guy was there for hours, changing all of my splitters (for free) and climbing the pole until all was fine; of course the problem was back in their office and they wouldn't give him the proper support.

And if it's not, a powered line booster can help (Radio Shack).

Have you tried defragging your drive, cleaning out all the shit, etc.? That might cause you some headaches. I don't know about Optimum, but TW is pretty good (for me anyway). I've only been down twice in the past year or so, and not for more than a few hours. Unplugging and replugging in the modem only serves to reset it internally. Ask them to give you a new modem, and see if the problem persists - if it does, then it's either thir signal or your PC. You could then backup all your shit, format/reinstall everything, and see how that works, but that's a pain in the ass (I've done it too many times, might be doing it yet again in the very near future).

Also, see if you can bypass the level 1 techies you get when you call customer service - most of these guys are just there to answer the phone and tell you to unplug the modem. Ask for level 3, those guys are usually on the ball.

The line between fantasy and reality is the same as that between sanity and insanity...which side of the line are you on?

You can reach me through AIM or email. Feel free to contact me if you have any board questions, techie (PC) questions, or even if you just wanna say hi.

What do you think should be in the black box?

God-damned mother fuckers! I'm at work now so I can post this. Fucking Optimum Online goes down yesterday RIGHT AS I GOT HOME FROM WORK!?!?! I'm on the fucking computer for 3 minutes and it goes OFFLINE. Call them up for 4 hours and talk to 5 morons that couldn't tell me shit. After the first call, I would preface all of my personal info with what I had done. (removed and re-installed software, shutdown machine, unplugged machine for 30 seconds and booted, unplugged the modem for 30 seconds, unplugged both for 30 seconds, unplugged cable from primary feed for 30 seconds) After 10 minutes of explaining what I did, this ONE DUMB MOTHERFUCKER says, "ok, I'm now going to ask you to shut down your computer" HOLY FUCK!!!! I'm seeing red. There is a fucking message on their phone system about Piscataway (the next town over) being offline and these "techs" DIDN'T FUCKING HAVE A CLUE!

Now I have to leave work early for another DUMB FUCK tech to come to my house and say "problem's not here" must be in the office. God-Damn people, I do this shit for a living, I KNOW HOW TO WIRE MY FUCKING HOUSE FOR A CABLE MODEM!!! When I'm sitting there using it and it shuts down for no reason, DON"T FUCKING PING MY MODEM, IT AIN'T FUCKING WORKING!!! MORONS I TELL YOU... MORONS!

What he said.

The key to tech support is remember most intelligent guys get promoted quickly - so you wind up with phone idiots. Go right to supervisor.
