Instead of starting an entirely new thread I decided to edit my previous post about wireless networking since it's all related. Here goes: Ok my router(Netgear MR314) tells me in order to use it for my isp(optonline) it says i have to spoof the MAC address by giving the ip assigned(by the router) to the box that was originally hooked up to the cable modem. Now i've had nothing but trouble with disconnects etc. with the router but i realized maybe in order to "spoof" the MAC address of that box correctly the system needs to be on constantly? Am i right or can it spoof it without it being actually on(maybe held in memory in the router or something)? This could solve a lot of my problems but I don't like the idea of this system running 24/7. It's an older system and gets sluggish after a few hours of uptime. If this is true I'll probably return all the networking stuff because to have to keep a PC on constantly for a router to work correctly is horseshit...

I was having the problem with the disconnect, but it didn't have anything to do with the OS. I had to do with the cable modem. The way that I had to go around the problem was to get DSL. Once I had more power going through the line, I had no problem going through 3 PC's (98, 2k, and XP). The problem after that: Paying for the service.

What have you done to troubleshoot? Have you disconnected the XP machine and only run the other machine? How long do you stay connected before you disconnect? How long does it take with the XP machine? Have you tried installing the software to host the router on the XP machine? Let us know.

I've tried anything and everything.I believe it has to be XP related because I have NO problems with the ME machine. It varies on how long it stays connected I've had it go from about 12 or so hours and then other times just a couple. The other machines rarely disconnect if ever...I have on other computer running XP which is wired to the router. The funny thing about that one is,is if I disconnect on the wireless XP that one also does but the ME one keeps on chugging along like nothing happened. There was no "software" to host the router, just a web interface. It's come to the point where I've thought about returning it but I love it when it is working...Lots of people speculate its the firmware of the router but I don't buy into that. I was going to install ME on the wireless XP machine and see if it works but I can't find the CD. :(
