Does anyone know if NYC Roadrunner supports multiple PCs? If not, are you able to use a router to get around this? I'm going to be setting my brother up with a small network, just wanted to get a heads up before I trek out there.

From their FAQ section:
quote:

11. How many computers can I have connected to one Road Runner modem? I am interested in deploying a Local Area Network (LAN) in my home - where can I get information?
You can have up to six computers (a primary connection plus five additional IP connections) networked to a Road Runner modem with all six users simultaneously and independently accessing the Road Runner service. You will need to install a LAN or Hub in order to inter-connect your computers. LAN kits are available at most major PC retailers or can be purchased directly from PC equipment manufacturers.

Road Runner charges a monthly fee of $4.95 per additional user requiring simultaneous Internet access (an additional IP address). Each modem can support up to 5 additional outlet connections. (Some restrictions apply for commercial customers.)

Road Runner provides customer support and technical assistance for internet connectivity to your Road Runner modem and primary computer connection. Road Runner does not provide customer support or troubleshooting support for Local Area Networks. Should you experience any problems with the functionality of your Hub or LAN please refer those issues to your PC retailer or LAN equipment manufacturer.
Next time try doing a little research on your own, deek...

While it's true you also could get around this with Lynksys cable modem/DSL router, the extra 4.95 a month for a legitimate ip address could be well worth it.

I'm constantly having issues connecting to different net games because of port forwarding.

Just somethign to keep in mind, along with Barch's information.

How many computers are you planning to connect?

This has been discussed here before (I'll go find the thread for ya and add a link... I know how you hate research. :-P Here it is. )and I have suggested a cheaper alternative to the lil' blue router setup that everyone and their brother (ha ha... how appropriate, what with you hooking up your brother and all :-D ) has been using and proclaiming as the ONLY way to share a cable modem.

Anyway, for less than $100 at least three companies offer a phone line setup to connect at least 2 stations over existing wiring. Substantial savings in install time and equipment cost. Only down side I can see is potential speed difference (but, for a home network do you really NEED 100mb? Especially if he's got you setting it up...) and the strictly peer to peer situation which will require the use of... dare I say it? ICS. Which, by the way, I have had great success with currently and in the past.

So I was feeling a little lazy today...Is that a crime? I'm actually surprised you took some time away from your daily digital activities to help me. :-p

I already know what I'm going to do as far as the network aspect is concerned, I just wasn't sure what Roadrunner supported. I looked briefly on their website last night, but I didn't see it.

I got him 2 laptops, so I'm just going to go with a wireless NAP off the modem and he should be all set. Anyway, thanks for your time fuck-stick, I really appreciate it.

***EDIT***
LMAO!! gotta love Goatweed's IE spell check addition...it includes curse words.

Goddammit...

What's it gonna take to get someone to try the phoneline setup with a cable modem and ICS? I really want to know if it works before I get one.

ICS just plain sucks ass. Don't waste your time with it. I wouldn't use phone lines for anything. If anything, get a wireless setup.

I would recommend going with the router.
About ICS, it is a total waste. It makes the connection so slow its unbearable.

Not to mention that when the host computer needs a reboot, all the computers in the daisy chain lose the net.

And you still have problems with legitimate IP addresses.

Did you expect any less? I'm glad I could help...there's nothing worse than misspelling a curse word.

As to the topic, I would go with a router. I'm not very well-versed in the ways of splitting a RR line via a router, but everyone with whom I have spoken to on the subject does swear by it (and yes, Barch, they recommend the blue Lynksys one).

Just wanted to add my thanks to goatweed also. I'm not sure if I mentioned it before. That speller is quite the handy addition to IE. I'll be crossing 2 WOW's off your tab. :-D

Shit, thanks for the reminder! Seriously, I'm glad I could help. I just wish I wrote the damn thing instead of stumbling on it through google one day.

Maybe Froy should add it to the FAQ? Kinda like a "suggested tool for happier and healthier board surfing"? Then again, that would pretty much put Slash out of a job...
