Well, I am about to finally (3 mos later) build my new system - a MSI kt3ultra aru board with a Athlon XP 1800, 512MB DDR, 40gig IDE HD, 80gigIDE HD, lan/cable modem, zip250, cdrw & LS-120 drive.

Since I'm going through the trouble, should I continue to use Win 98SE, or switch to Win XP Pro (or even home)?

I'll be networking at home through router to a win98 machine.

have most of the XP drivers come out? I'm thinking about also upgrading old video card to ATI AIW8500DV, but I seem to remember ATI having driver issues.

Suggestions?

DO NOT EVEN GO NEAR XP HOME EDITION!!

There, that should just about do it. :-D

Go with XP Pro. Far more stable than 98SE, and there are Win2K/XP-compliant drivers for just about everything out there by this time.

Are you pondering what I'm pondering?

I think so, Brain...

I've been tearing my hair out trying to get an XP station to connect to a network of mostly 95 an 98 machines. I by no means prefer 98 to XP but, unless you plan to change the other comp to XP also, you might consider dual boot at the very least.

Totally agree with ya Barch. I've got two 'puters about four feet apart connected with a crossover cable, but the other one's running WinME and it just won't talk to mine running XP Pro.

Only other problem I've got with XP is my CD Burner refuses to cooperate. I'm sure Microsoft will get around to telling me how I screwed up one of these days...

I had the same problem once. Have you tried installing Net Beui on the 95's and 98's??

Yeah, actually I think that that is the problem. XP doesn't like Netbuei. They don't even include it in the standard install. Gotta dig through the CD to find it. And, all the documentation insists that Netbuei isn't required to do anything.

I had been using tcp/ip strictly for internet connection sharing and Netbuei for file and printer sharing. Everything worked fantastically until I connected the first XP station. ICS works fine but, I get completely random results with drive & printer sharing. But, I can consistently NEVER connect to the station I use as a central file storage location (also the ICS server. So, it obviously connects it just doesn't show any shared devices). And, no other station can see shared devices on the XP station.

I gave up and went to a dual boot situation. Whenever I need to print anything remotely or move files around, I start up Me otherwise XP. It sucks but, it gets the job done.

I had the same problem with a win98 network when I added a win2k box. I killed myself with this for about 2 weeks. Then, one day out of the blue I decided to rename the workgroup on all the machines and bingo, they all see each other fine now. Actually, I think it was something win98 added when I had to reboot after the workgroup name change. Gotta love win98, slightest config change and it wants you to reboot. I was walking by one and I farted, I swear it prompted me to reboot the machine. :-D

NTI cd-maker Pro whatever is the latest release works like coke on sluts.

As for the Net bouiuiouoe connetion...

Net bouysouieori Net SuCKs azS...

TCP/IP all day.

I can't wait for the new TCP/IP protocols to get written to adapt to illegitimate ip's to kill the port forwarding problem.

Yeah, I gues XP pro is the way to go.
I had been hearing the networking & driver horror stories PC Mag -The Good, the Bad, and Microsoft, Part One
PC Mag-Teaching Windows XP to Share

but no guts, no glory.

I guess no one there has had problems with the "Corp" version?

Usually I just create a local user account on the 2000 (or in this case XP, essentially the same for sharing) machine that matches the username logging on to the 98 PC. If you think 98 doesn't have a logon, it does, you just don't see it. Hit Start, and you'll see "Log off ..." - that's it. Make that username as a local account on XP and give it the appropriate rights to the shared folder.

But yeah, go with 2000 or XP Pro, don't touch Home, it's fucking worthless.

And yes, i wouldn't be surprised if NetBEUI disagrees with XP. Microsoft is moving away from anything NetBIOS (like WINS) and moving it all toward DNS. So make sure in the TCP/IP settings on the 98 machines, you have DNS enabled.

See, I think it really depends on what you want to use it for. If you want it for hosting, I would go with 2k. If you want it for graphics and shit, XP. If you want to play games, 98 seems to be the best... for me at least. If you are going to go with XP, stay away from HOME. Sounds like you have options, so try them all out. If you don't like it, F-disk, F-disk, F-disk!!!

Go with 2000 pro (personal fav) or XP pro. I have xp home edition on my new labtop, and i allready have had some major problems with it. I'm a CS student, so while programming i can make mistakes (run on loops and a ton of other shit), so on my pc (with 2000 pro) iv'e never had any of crashes or other problems with it. With xp home iv'e allready had one weird crash and i had to reinstall my hole system. So you definatly want something NT based.
If you do get XP home, check and see if all your software is up to date. I've even had problems with an older Microsoft Office with it.

Psst.... little "trade secret".... XP Home IS NT-based. They just threw in the personal firewall bullshit and removed advanced networking components, like the ability to join a domain.

Yeah i did'nt hit enter after talking bout my problems with xp.
It was a thought i put in there while i was evaluating his options...
If i did'nt know XP WAS NT BASED I WOULD'NT BE USING IT. So thanks for your trade secret, but i don't really need it. I guess i'll have to edit before leaving a post for you nitpicky motherfuckers.... :-p

I meant i had to install my OS, my software that i got with my labtop, my mess of other software, my drivers i got pre installed, my outside drive, and all my little extras. I should'nt have used the word "system", but i just did'nt feel like typing out all the other shit in the previous statement. So i'm lazy :)

Oh between the 3 choices, i like XP PRO the best from what iv'e seen and read of it. 98 SE is a nice OS but i would rather take XP Pro.

  4. SlangYour loose, smelly asshole. (okay, I added that one)

Whole, adj. -
