M's say Yankees are soaking basepaths

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ESPN.com news services

NEW YORK -- If speed kills, are the New York Yankees intentionally killing the Seattle Mariners vaunted running game?

That's the question on the minds of some of the Mariners. The M's believe the Yankees have intentionally soaked the basepaths at Yankee Stadium.

"Definitely," Seattle's Mark McLemore told the Seattle Post-Intelligencer on Friday. "Definitely."

"They can think what they want," Yankees manager Joe Torre responded. "But I had nothing to do with it."

In the opener of the three-game series on Friday night, the M's running game was definitely held in check by the Yankees. In fact, both McLemore and Ichiro Suzuki were gunned out trying to steal. The M's were limited to six hits and no steals in a 4-0 loss.

"It was pretty muddy," McLemore said. "But really, I don't know if I would have made it if it was dry. (Jorge) Posada made a strong throw. But they're going to keep doing it, and we're going to keep running. It's what we do. I've been thrown out before, and I'll be thrown out again.

"If a home-run hitter goes four at-bats without a homer, he doesn't stop swinging, does he?"

In fact, the Mariners have now failed in their last six attempts to steal bases -- a fact not lost on manager Lou Piniella. "The (wetness) was the case tonight here and that was the case in Boston," Piniella told the Post-Intelligencer. "They're starting to wet these fields down pretty good."

Ironically, the only team with more stolen bases than the M's in the American League is the Yankees, with 128. The Mariners have 126.

teams have been doing stuff like this for a while. there was a good article about it in sports illustrated like a yr or 2 ago. its more of a field crew thing then managerial thing. its crazy all the stuff they can do.

How much stupider can you get?! Why in god's name would a team mess up their own field in order to disadvantage another team? Doing so would give them the disadvantage as well. And if the field was unusually wet, don't you think an umpire would notice? And wouldn't messing with the field put the grounds crew's jobs in jeopardy? Teams need to stop looking for reasons that they lost and just accept that you can't win all the time....

why do I say I'm fine when it's obvious I'm not?
why's it so hard to tell you what I want?
why can't you just read my mind?

I really don't think that Lou Pinella will ever be happy as a manager. His team has the best record in baseball and he still has to fucking bitch and complain about something. I can't wait for the playoffs so he can bitch and cry more when they get fucking eliminated by the Yankees.

Why fucking bother

Pinella fpund out about this yesterday and sent Mike Cameron to the Yankee dugout to get a bat that specializes in hitting during rainy days...thats why he has 8 rbi's today. Now the M's are cheating.

This is fucking ponderous.

Aren't these guys supposed to be professionals? That's like Pete Sampras citing an injury of some kind after every loss he has had in the last eight year.. .uh, wait a minute...

Either way, the Yankees are run by a guy who will do whatever it likes to win. If I lived in Kansas City, Seattle or East Bumblefuck, I too would hate George's World Series-hogging monster.

But I live in New York City and LOVE IT!!!
