Former NFL star John Elway approved for Arena Football League expansion team in Denver

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (August 18, 2001) - The Arena Football League’s Board of Directors unanimously approved former Denver Broncos quarterback John Elway’s application for an Arena Football League expansion team, the league announced today from ArenaBowl XV in Grand Rapids, Mich. The team is expected to begin play in the Pepsi Center during the 2003 Arena Football League season.

Elway’s ownership group consists of Denver Broncos owner Pat Bowlen and Pepsi Center owner Stan Kroenke, who also owns the NHL’s Colorado Avalanche, the NBA’s Denver Nuggets and a percentage of the NFL’s St. Louis Rams.

“This is the best ownership group for the city of Denver,” said AFL Commissioner David Baker. “We are thrilled to have a team back in the city that the first ArenaBowl champions were crowned, and there is not a better group to put together than Pat Bowlen, owner of the Broncos, Stan Kroenke, owner of the Nuggets, Avalanche, and the Pepsi Center, and John Elway, future Hall of Fame quarterback. It is an honor to have them as part of our Arena Football family.”

“We are very pleased to have been accepted by the Board of the Arena Football League,” said Elway. “We are continuing our due diligence and expect an announcement in the future as we progress through the process. We are thrilled to have the opportunity to bring to the fans in Denver an exciting and affordable professional football experience. The Arena Football League has withstood the test of time and has proven it will be around for a long time.”

Currently, the AFL consists of 19 teams and is expected to expand to as many as 24 teams in the 2003 season.

The Denver Dynamite, a charter member of the AFL, played in Denver from 1987 to 1991 and defeated the Pittsburgh Gladiators 45-16 on August 1, 1987 to win the first-ever ArenaBowl.

Elway retired in May 1999 as the winningest quarterback in NFL history with a career record of 148-82-1. He was a nine-time Pro Bowler, a regular season MVP (1987) and a Super Bowl MVP (1999). He finished his 16-year career ranked second in NFL history in passing yards (51,475) and third in touchdown passes (300). A future Hall of Famer, Elway appeared with the Broncos in five Super Bowls, including back-to-back victories in 1998 and 1999 to cap his career.

Elway is perhaps best known for his uncanny ability to guide his team to come-from-behind victories in the fourth quarter. In his career, Elway engineered 47 Broncos game-winning or game-tying drives, the most famous of which, a 99-yard fourth quarter drive in the 1986 AFC Championship game against the Cleveland Browns, is simply known as “The Drive.”

Elway is just one of many notable former NFL players or current NFL owners involved with the Arena Football League and its developmental league, arenafootball2 (af2). Former Eagles quarterback Ron Jaworski is part of an ownership group in Philadelphia. Last month, a group including legendary quarterback Johnny Unitas announced it would operate an arenafootball2 team in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., beginning in April 2002. Former Oakland Raiders quarterback Kenny Stabler joined the af2’s Mobile (Ala.) Wizards as chief operator.

The late Walter Payton helped bring an expansion AFL club to Chicago this past season and current NFL owners such as Dallas’ Jerry Jones, Washington’s Daniel Snyder and Fred Drasner, William Clay Ford Jr., in Detroit, New Orleans’ Tom Benson own AFL teams. Several other NFL owners have applied for and been granted franchises in the past few months, including the ownership of the Jacksonville Jaguars, and San Francisco 49ers.

The Arena Football League culminates its 15th season tomorrow, Sunday, August 19, with the live ABC broadcast of the ArenaBowl XV World Championship game between the Grand Rapids Rampage and Nashville Kats. The team of Brent Musburger, Gary Danielson, and Lynn Swann will call the action.

I'm so glad you can speak for the rest of the board. When a former player who many consider to be when of the best of all-time buys a team, that's news.

Do us all a favor, make one thread, call it the Arena Football News Thread, and post every story you get in that one fucking thread, because quite frankly, not many people care about seeing you post all these stories in different threads, SO JUST CREATE ONE THREAD, and put all your cute little stories in that thread, thank you

the HLJC president making a valid point to a Socialist C-Bloc member, making him look like an ass. Makes me ponder, even though i am italian, if i should join the HLJC or just stay on my own ship...anyway to the topic, yeah John Elway is a big name, but you have posted so much in different threads with no replies, just make 1 thread next time.

It is kinda sad for golf when this gets more replies than the PGA championship thread i started yesterday lol.

I can't stand John Elway. Does anyone remember reading that this pompous ass wanted to take the big horse statue from the top of Mile High after he retired. I've been to Denver and every fuckin corner theres a John Elway Used Car Lot, or a John Elway Grocery store blah blah blah

Guy is so overrated anyway. Marino was 100 times better. Big yellow horsed toothed bastard.

You can say Marino was better. You may be right.

But he certainly wasnt far and away better. Elway was nothing short of great and as clutch a performer as their was in Pro Sports.

And his 2 Superbowl rings go nice in retirement as opposed to the 0 for Mr. Marino.

1993- AFC CHampionship Game. Dolphins host Bills and lose. One thing is for sure. A John Elway team does not lose a Conference Championship Game at Home. Although I wish to God they did in 1998 season.

Im not saying Elway was better than Marino. Because the better QB probably was Marino. Fact is they are both 2 of the all time greats. And John Elway CERTAINLY is in Dan Marino's league.

FB... I agree, Elway was definitely in Marino's league, but I still can't help but think the guy was overrated.

During the time of his retirement, I couldn't help but get digsusted every time the media would say that the best of three sports are retiring together... MJ, Gretzky, Elway

To me it was a case of "Which name doesn't fit in the group"

Some people may consider him the best QB of all time which to me is a joke, since in my book I would rank em this way...

(Not all time - just during Elways career)
- Montana
- Marino
- Favre
- Young
- Elway

(I know Favre and Young don't have the overall numbers, but I attribute that to service years, not talent)

Sidenote: I can not believe I made it to 1000 posts... congrats to me :)

You have yet to state why you think Elway is so overrated? Is it being the biggest Clutch performer in NFL History? Is it his 2 SuperBowl rings, and 4 Super Bowl Apperanances?

It's kind of a moot point. Elway obviously had more success, but Marino was the leader of a team that was a constant contender. Can Elway say that? They are certainly in the same league, but we'll never know who is better because Marino rarely had the supporting cast that Elway did when he won his championships.
