DETROIT --Veteran free agent Brett Hull has agreed to a two-year contract with the Detroit Red Wings for between $9 and $10 million, ESPN the Magazine's E.J. Hradek reported Tuesday.

The deal for the Dallas Stars right winger is expected to be announced Wednesday or Thursday, Hradek reported.

Red Wings general manager Ken Holland would not confirm the deal to the Associated Press, but he said an offer had been extended to Hull for two years for roughly $8 million.

The New York Rangers and Montreal Canadiens had also reportedly been talking with the 37-year-old Hull and were said to have offered about $10 million for two years.

Detroit assistant general manager Jim Nill said the Red Wings have been talking to Hull and agent Mike Barnett for "about two or three weeks."

Barnett couldn't be reached by the Associated Press for comment.

Hull had 39 goals last season with the Stars and has 649 in his 15-season career.

Earlier this summer, the Red Wings traded for goalie Dominik Hasek and signed left wing Luc Robitaille. Despite spending $12 million on Hasek and Robitaille and raising the payroll to about $55 million, the Red Wings still wanted Hull.

He scored the series-winning goal in overtime of the 1999 Stanley Cup for the Stars, after signing with them as a free agent in 1998. He also has played with the St. Louis Blues and Calgary Flames.

He and his father, Bobby Hull, hold the record for NHL goals by a father-son combination with 1,259. Bobby Hull had 610 goals in a Hall of Fame career spent mostly with the Chicago Blackhawks.

The Red Wings, who were bounced out of the playoffs last season in the first round, would have to be considered a favorite in the Western Conference after a busy off-season signing or trading for aging stars.

Ahhh yes, Brett signs with the other team that likes to collect big named relics. At this rate I'm not sure which team will actually be eligible for social security first. Oh well Ranger fans fear not my friends...Sather may have let Hull and Jagr slip through his fingers but he managed to successfully sign concussion boy. There still may be hope for them ;)

thanks for the find wpp :)

NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!

This sucks. I have to be optimistic because Lindros is a star, concussion case or not. But, at least if we added Hull, it would be somewhat worth losing 3 studs. Sather will be assassinated before the year ends, the question is how many people will attempt to kill him.

i think Hull coming to the Rangers was the only thing the few Ranger fans who were happy with the Lindros trade were hoping for. at least if Lindros got hurt they can fall back on Hull.

Well i'm an Islander fan anyway...so i'm happy.

Rangers did a great job on the Free Agent Market this offseason.

Dave Karpa and Igor Ulanov will lead the Rangers to the promised land.

Hull definitely would've helped but the real bummer was them letting Jagr get away. He's younger and he's better. I'd love to be optimistic about Lindros but after 8 years of sub par performances and missed games it's really hard. Concussions aside the guy has never played a full season. He's never scored more than 40 goals a season and in general has never lived up to the expectations everyone had. I just don't see this year being any different. I just don't think he's as dedicated too the game as he may say he is. And his parents butting in and messing with his career probably doesn't help much either. But hey maybe it was just him being in Philly with all that pressure on him to bring them the Cup, who knows? He might pull a Kovalev and kick ass :p

Hey FB...do I sense sarcasm in that comment? ;)

thanks for the find wpp :)

I'm happy we didnt get Hull. I dont like going after aging western conference players. As for Lindros I was pissed off about it at first but now I am kinda excited about it. If hes healthy I would rather have him lead the club then Jagr. Lindros is the type of player who could carry a team to the championship and i dont think Jagr is that kind of player no matter how skilled he is offensively. Then again it all depends on his health but theres a tremendous upside and optimism in ranger land now, the kind thats been missing since 97

if lindros is healthy then he is a better leader then jagr. look at what jagr has done. he scores alot of goals but his team never does anything big. when lemieux left he never got pittsburgh anywhere. pitt never won the division or conference even though he put up big numbers on the other hand lindros got his team to the finals he also led them to conference titles and division titles. so that is why if lindros is healthy id rather have him lead the club then jagr based on their track record and dont tell me jagr has two rings bec lemiuex led the team in those days not jagr

Sorry to burt you bubble sweetie but after 8 miserable years of the Flyers ALMOST making it, getting close and failing miserably it I gotta tell you from experience that Lindros is not a leader. He had NO business being captain of the Flyers and he usually wasn't around enough anyway. In 2000 he came back after the Flyers were up on the Devils 3 games to 1, screwed up the team chemistry and The Devils beat them in 7 games. He's not an outspoken guy, he hates talking in public and he was never the leader in the Flyers' locker room. He was expected to carry them to a Stanley Cup and all he carried them to was year after year of disappointments and almosts. Sorry again but I really wouldn't put too much faith in the guy. If they're gonna start winning again it'll be Messier that leads them there. As for Jagr, he may not be a leader either but he's faster, he's stronger and puts up more points than Lindros...but most importantly he's out there on the ice every game.

thanks for the find wpp :)

Sorry to inform some of you, but there's no "C" on the #88 jersey and as far as I know, Mark Messier is still the "leader" in Rangerland.

And Fleury will be returning, hopefully for the entire season, and he'll score more than anyone on the Rangers if he's playing as well as he was last season!!

The worst thing Sather did was to let Graves go!

The reason why the Flyers have gone further than Pittsburgh recently is because they have been just a flat out Better team than the Penguins. They have had more talent and more depth.

It wasnt because of Eric's great Leadership skills.

I completely agree. At first I did see where he was coming from making that trade to get younger but now that he has Lindwuss I don't think he made the right move. He could've really used Graves to protect the big fag.

Very true FB. While the Pens had Jagr and Lemeieux that's all they had. Their defense is weak and the goaltending is shaky. That rookie had a pretty good run last year but other than him they lacked in goaltending. I mean come on, Garth Snow??? If you've got a Flyer reject goalie on your team you know you're in trouble ;)

First Sakic signs back with Detroit(um you ment the Avs) without much noise.....
Then my favorite player in the league (Roenick) signs with my least favortie team.....
The Rangers lose the best player in the world to the Caps for a seemingly worse package of youth....
The they sign a man I hate more than Deion Sanders....who is damaged goods.....
And now they miss out on the last decent free agent in Hull....yeah, who needs a career proven sniper?! Not the Rangers!!
Christ, if they didn't trade away Selanne at the end of last year I would be a fuckin' Ducks fan!
