Save Yankee Stadium
The fix is in to raze the great ballpark
Daily News

They will begin the process soon of taking a wrecking ball to Yankee Stadium, a landmark of the city and of sports, the most famous sports facility since the Roman Colosseum, where only the lions had a better record than the New York Yankees. It will only be like losing a piece of Central Park, or one of the great museums of the city, or a cathedral. And nobody in town does anything to stop this.

Yankee Stadium
There will be a big announcement, from Gov. Pataki and Mayor Giuliani and the owners of the Yankees and Mets, that they have overcome the last political hurdles and that domed stadiums will be built for both teams, at a projected cost of $2 billion, a cost to be shared by the teams and by you.

Ballpark Hoopla

The Yankees' new stadium will go up in Macombs Dam Park. The Mets' new stadium, a modern-day Ebbets Field, will be built in the parking lot at Shea Stadium. You will hear that this is some kind of major triumph for the Bronx especially, because the Yankees are only moving across the street, instead of out of the borough or out of the state.

You will hear that the long-term financing plan the city comes up with to pay for all this is the best thing city government has done since dropping the crime rate as low as the Mets' team batting average.

You will hear that all this isn't just good for the ballclubs, it is good for you, even though these new designer ballparks have never benefited a single taxpayer anywhere. The idea that they do is just another lie told by politicians like Giuliani, and owners.

And lost in all this will be the loss, sometime in the next five years, of Yankee Stadium.

George Steinbrenner and Rudy Giuliani talk things over.
And not once, throughout a process that has gone on for years behind closed doors in City Hall, has a single voter or baseball fan, for that matter had anything to say about this. There have really been only three fans who mattered here:

Giuliani, Yankees owner George Steinbrenner, Mets owner Fred Wilpon. Who in the end are tremendous fans of themselves. Pataki is the one who did the most to keep the Yankees from getting their new park on the West Side, saying the land belonged to the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, and he wasn't giving it up. The rest of his contributions involve parking structures, a new MetroNorth station in the Bronx, improvements to the Major Deegan Expressway.

The stadium deals have really been brokered by the mayor and two owners. In the whole City of New York, in what is usually a loud, splendid democracy, these are the only votes that matter.

Mets Need New Home

You can make a much better case for the Mets getting a new facility than the Yankees, provided Wilpon wants to pay for it himself. Shea Stadium was built for football and baseball nearly 40 years ago and has been slowly falling apart ever since. At least no city park will be razed in the name of baseball progress.

"And let's face it," one of the mayor's sidemen said yesterday, "the Mets don't have anything close to the history the Yankees do."

The history doesn't matter now. Only luxury boxes for Steinbrenner matter. You want to know why the Mets are in play with this particular mayor? Because even Giuliani isn't a slick enough talker to explain why the Yankees, who don't need a new stadium, get one and the Mets do not. So he gets ready to throw money around like a drunken college kid on spring break, producing this two-fer, two ballparks that will eventually cost far more than $2 billion.

Giuliani, the lame duck who nearly faints when he puts on his Yankee warmup jacket, treats the Yankees like the company in a company town.

Someday, there will be a new shopping-mall version of Yankee Stadium, one that will be an instant monument, to both greed and hypocrisy. At least the Mets never insulted their own borough. When Steinbrenner first started talking about moving, he said it was about the Bronx neighborhood in which he played. You listened to enough whispers from Yankee executives and started to wonder if they were talking about the Beirut Bombers and not the Bronx Bombers. But apparently, over time, the South Bronx has turned into Scarsdale, because now the Yankees basically will stay right where they are.

The Yankees don't need a new home because they never did. It is hilarious reading and listening as people suddenly come to this conclusion. Maybe they have noticed something: Not only do the Yankees win the World Series every year, they have also become the greatest box-office success in the history of the franchise. Somehow they have done this playing in that neighborhood Steinbrenner used to worry so much about. Along the way, they have become the centerpiece, maybe the only significant piece in Steinbrenner's own television network.

And guess what? It isn't enough. You know why? You want to know why we have to destroy a ballpark that people feel is the White House of baseball? Because Steinbrenner has only a handful of luxury boxes and wants hundreds instead. They are the real goodies of modern professional sports, like luxury high-rises with prime views of the action on the field. And Steinbrenner wants you, who will never set foot inside one of them, to pay for half.

As always, owning your own sports team is nice work if you can get it. Especially in the Giuliani administration. I keep waiting for him to announce he wants to build a park for the Rolando Paulino All-Stars when they get back from the Little League World Series.

Boss Ain't Broke

This mayor, who has screamed so much about welfare, will come up loving it when it is corporate welfare for someone like Steinbrenner, one of the last people in town, when he is in town, who needs a handout from anybody.

You never got a vote. No one did. In this city, it is only an outrage. The mayor will say he has the money to hold up his end, and that will be that.

You will someday be asked to sit in one of these new baseball palaces and cheer your heads off. But when it comes to financing them, you're just supposed to shut up.

I can't say that i'm to thrilled to hear about this. Yankee Staduim is a piece of history that should never be taken down. I think that they should refurb it. And the Dome Idea is really bad.

What you gonna do though? In business sense, You have any idea how much money George will make off just the luxury boxes that will be in the new Stadium?

Yankee stadium being tore down? Ouch that one hurts. Yankee stadium is baseball. Thats the only reason why the bronx hasn't been condemed. I'm very disturbed at hearing this. Along with they will be playing in a dome. The Bronx Bombers Playing in a dome, thats not yankee baseball. Thats just sad....

as much as i would love to see the yanks in a cool new stadium, the original is just too full of history to get rid of. i'm glad that they are staying in the bronx though, it would suck if they moved out of the area. hopefully the new stadium will do the team justice.

Change is always gonna happen, whether we like it or not. 24 Stanley Cup championships didn't save the Montreal Forum (RIP) so unfortunatley 26 won't be able to save The House That Ruth Built. Soon all that will be left of this grand piece of history will be the memories of the players and the fans.I wish it didn't have to be this way but what can we do? I guess all we can do now is enjoy it while it's still here .

I say the damn place should be made a museum or somthing u cant jus tear it down. ITS YANKEE STADIUM FOR CHRIST SAKES!! The House that Ruth built, i mean theres so many great stories or events and games that happened there. I mean the tradition and pride of the who orginization jus flows through that place every single day. I say the new stadium should look somewhat like the original at least. With a monument park and ya know the top of the back wall of the stadium where all the flags are. theyve won 26 World Series while having a home field there on that field. I think its good luck if ya ask me. Now if the teams sucked throughout the teams existence then id say tear the fucking thing down and get rid of the bad memories but u cant do that with this stadium.

I agree JJ. I wish they would do that. Seeing them tear down Yankee Stadium will be like hearing about the deaths of Joe Dimaggio, Mickey Mantle and Babe Ruth all over again. Or hearing Lou Gherig give his "Luckiest man" speech again when he had to retire due to illness. Sad, just sad. No other way to explain it.

Tearing down Yankee Stadium shouldn't even be a question....the cathedral must stand. The Clubhouses should become a baseball museum, the upper deck should be closed for safety, and use the field. If the new Yankee Stadium is built on the ground that is now the parks across the street, lots of kids will be out of ballfields. Imagine the pride in the borough's youth if they got to play on the grass at Yankee Stadium? You would never have to open the even the Loge section. Move the fences in to expand Monument Park for more & bigger tours. Re-do the field to Little League depth (would only take a couple of weeks) and let the kids play....but Thee Stadium MUST STAND, I don't care if the team move to f'n Jupiter, the Stadium must stand.

How would you feel about life...if Death was your sister?
