NEW YORK (Ticker) -- New York Yankees righthander Mike Mussina, who came within one strike of a perfect game Sunday night, was named American League Player of the Week on Tuesday.

Mussina won both his starts last week, capped by a brilliant performance in Boston. In front of a national television audience, he pitched 8 2/3 perfect innings before Carl Everett singled on a 1-2 pitch.

The game was Mussina's fourth career one-hitter and marked the second time he took a perfect game into the ninth inning.

For the week, Mussina went 17 scoreless innings, giving up only seven hits and two walks to along with a league-high 19 strikeouts.

This is Mussina's second Player of the Week Award this season and the Yankees' third in five weeks.

Also considered for the honor were Oakland teammates Eric Chavez and Mark Mulder, Kansas City's Carlos Febles, Texas' Rafael Palmeiro and Chicago teammates Royce Clayton and Chris Singleton

Watching replays of that Everett single to left still stings though. One strike away from immortality -- GONE -- in one felt swoop :(
