ISLANDERS CALL "MAJOR" PRESS CONFERENCE BEFORE WEDNESDAY
(September 4) Late Tuesday afternoon, the Islanders' media relations department began sending out invitations to the local and national media for a major press conference at 1:00 PM on Wednesday afternoon. ESPN Radio (1050 AM) is expected to interrupt its local broadcast of the nationally-heard "Dan Patrick Show" for 10-15 minutes to cover the formal, "podium" portion of the press conference. In addition, NEWYORKISLANDERS.COM will archive video footage from the press conference later in the afternoon. In other, unrelated news, we can confirm Alexei Yashin will not be wearing No. 90 and that on Thursday afternoon Yashin will be posing in full uniform on Jones Beach for a future photo essay in ESPN The Magazine.

I love the "unrelated" line - yeah, like anyone's gonna believe that shit. Yashin's in!

Funny how this new ESPNRadio is trying to be top dawg in New York sports talk by hiring some WFAN anchors, and buying the rights to all Islanders media stuff and WFAN still scooped them on this story.

That Jones Bch. thing could be a photo spread? (yuck man-ass)

Yashin Signs 10-year Deal Worth Nearly $90 Million
Wednesday September 05, 2001 1:09 PM

UNIONDALE, N.Y. (AP) - Alexei Yashin agreed to the biggest contract package in NHL history Wednesday, a 10-year deal with the New York Islanders worth nearly $90 million.
The 27-year-old Russian center had given up millions by sitting out an NHL season in Ottawa.

"It's a privilege for me to know that I will be spending the rest of my career on Long Island," he said at a news conference.

The deal eclipses the one the Colorado Avalanche gave Joe Sakic in July - five years, $50.5-million. The Avalanche have an option for a sixth year that would increase the package to $57 million.

Washington's Jaromir Jagr will make $20.7 million over the next two seasons, making him the highest-paid player by annual salary.

Yashin, who earned $3.6 million last season with Ottawa, will report to training camp Tuesday in Lake Placid, N.Y.

"To add a player of Alexei's caliber means great things for this hockey club," general manager Mike Milbury said.

Yashin had 40 goals and 48 assists with the Senators last season. He managed only one assist as Toronto swept Ottawa in the first round of the playoffs.

He sat out the previous year after Ottawa declined to give him a lucrative pay increase. In 1998-99, he scored 44 goals and had 50 points and was a finalist for the league's MVP award.

The 6-foot-3 center has proved durable. He did not miss a game in any of his last four seasons.

The two-time All-Star represented Russia in five world championships, including 1993 when his team won the gold medal. Yashin won an Olympic silver medal in 1998.

Ottawa traded Yashin for the No. 2 entry draft pick and selected teen-ager Jason Spezza. Forward Bill Muckalt and defenseman Zdeno Chara also went to the Senators.

A guy who is barely a Top 20 Forward in the NHL,does not deserve to be the Highest Paid Player in NHL History.

But you cant blame the Islanders for putting that money in front of him, thats their decision. But Alexei Yashin is not Wayne Gretzky, like Islander fans are making him out to be.

Well, I gotta say at least I feel like I have something to look forward to in hockey now. Maybe the Godzilla clips of MSG being blown to smithereens won't be the most exciting thing at the Mausoleum for us anymore! :-)
Go Isles!

Oh hell fucking yeah!!!
Francine, just because your rangers did absolutely dick this offseason except trade three future stars for a vegetable you don't have to go complaining about all the isles moves. Yashin will be on the top of his game this year, and he will help the team A LOT! 6 days till training camp.

oh, and wookie - lmao about the chara video.

Last season, Yashin was 40-48-88 in 82 games. He was tied for 2nd in the league in game-winning goals (10), tenth in goals and 11th in points. The 6-3, 225-pound center has also proven to be very durable; he did not miss a single game in any of his last four seasons. In 504 NHL regular season games, Yashin is 218-273-491.

barely in the top 20, huh?

I know ziggy, I saw it too. "If it weren't for my horse, I wouldn't have spent that year in college." FB is just pissed because the biggest thing to hit the garden this season was Chrictopher Reeve with skates.

I heard them talking about it on ESPN Radio a few days ago on Mike & Mike and they basically made the Isles seem like the anti-Christ and this is the beginning of the end for hockey.

How about blaming the Rangers for bringing the salaries to the point where they were before Yashin was signed.
