McGwire Upset at Delay in Canceling Games

St. LOUIS (Reuters) - St. Louis Cardinals home-run king Mark McGwire says he is dismayed that Major League Baseball did not move more quickly to postpone this weekend's games.

``It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that sporting events are absolutely meaningless compared to what's going on in Washington and going on in New York,'' McGwire told Friday's St. Louis Post Dispatch.

McGwire said he thought even plans to re-start the season on Monday should depend on the progress of the rescue and recovery efforts at that point.

``That is the first and foremost thing, trying to find if any more people are alive,'' he said. ``For athletes to even think about going out to play with lives still buried, it's totally wrong...

``I feel ashamed we're even talking about it. We should be talking about what's going on in New York and Washington and what the President and everybody else is trying to do,'' McGwire said.

``No, (the sport) is not a diversion, until those people are found and the families can go on with their mourning. This country has yet to go into mourning. It's still in shock,'' said McGwire.

``When the President says, 'Get back to normal life,' it means get back to normal life. That means to leave your house, to do your shopping, food. Not to play sporting events,'' McGwire said.

I think McGwire is absolutely correct. There is no reason anyone should be worrying about sports at this time.

Just another example why Mark McGwire truly is a class act...Bravo

Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.

McGwire is right...trying to move your life forward is one thing, but how could anyone even think about playing baseball (or any sport for that matter) at a time like this. Not only that, but who at this point would really want to go see them play?

Good question. I have a lot of friends that are season ticket holders for the Yankees and not many of them are too thrilled about going back to the stadium yet. I know I won't be going back for some time. I'm not too sure about the rest of the country but I'll bet attendance for sporting events in the NY/NY area will drop consideraby.

I'm thinking maybe the opposite. I have tickets to the Mets & Braves Friday and I think I'm looking forward to going. To be out with a crowd for the first time, singing the National Anthem... I tend to think attendance may be up as people try and show defiance and rally around something together.
