Jordan Cancels News Conference Next Week

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Michael Jordan has decided not to hold a news conference next week to announce whether he is coming out of retirement because of Tuesday's terror attacks in New York and Washington, the Washington Post reported on Friday.

Citing two sources familiar with the plans, the newspaper said Jordan believed an announcement of whether he would play in the NBA again would be inappropriate and scrubbed a news conference planned for Thursday at Washington's MCI Center.

The Washington Post said Jordan, an executive and part owner of the Washington Wizards, could still make his plans known as he did when he ended his first retirement during the 1994-95 season simply by announcing through a Chicago Bulls news release: ``I'm back!''

The club is awaiting an announcement to know how to proceed with ticket sales, marketing, sponsorships and publication of its programs and media guide, the Post said.

Jordan has been training in Chicago to see if he can get to a fitness level that would allow him to compete again.

Despite two broken ribs and bouts with back spasms and knee tendinitis, Jordan has rated himself as steadily improving and in recent conversations with reporters appeared to be leaning toward returning.

Under NBA rules, Jordan would have to divest his ownership share to return as a player for the Wizards.

I wonder if the past events may have an impact on his decision. He may decide he doesn't want to come back into the spotlight.

Are you serious? This is a guy who isn't sure what sport he wants to play let alone when and how many times he should retire and or comeback.

I dunno, I guess I just like the Wayne Gretzkys of the world who retire and go on to do other things.

As a hockey fan it's nice to see Mario Lemieux come back and be one of the greatest in the game.

I just don't get why Michael Jordan ever retired if he thought he would miss the game so much. He's a great talent, but quite a flaky human being!

That is about the greatest summary of Jordan i have ever heard.

Not only that but even gretzky stayed too long. Nothing is more sad than watching an aged athlete especially one of former majesty and greatness prostitute himself almost to just clinge to a past no longer fathomable to them.

Best example of leaving while on top would be 3 men that i can think of.

1- rocky marciano retired as heavyweight champ and the only undefeated heavyweight champ in history (49-0 with 43 ko's)

2- Jim Brown - played only 9 years with the browns in is probably one of the greatest players in NFL history who holds records unbroken by men who play 15 and 20 years.

3- Michael Jordan - our generations super athelete who won 6 championships, (woulda been 8 in a row if he didnt reire the 1st time). To have the final moment of your career be making the final shot to clinch your 6th championship win in the closing seconds of the game. To retire as someone who in his career never scored anything but double digits in every game and only scored less than 20 points in a game once scoring 18. Plus being the seanson, all-star, and play off MVP in a aingle season.

But those are outweighed by watching people like Muhamed Ali, Kareem Abdul jabbar, Joe Lousi, Evander Holyfield, Wayne Greztky, and on and on.

Don't mess with perfection.

Plus to see Jordan in anything but a Bulls uniform would tarnish his legacy forever alone.
