For those of you doing the math at home, the Canucks raised $85,000 in US funds for the American Red Cross - BRA-Fuckin'-Vo!

My home town boys are doing me proud!

A little disturbing that the millionaire hockey PLAYERS could only pony up $2,000 between them though!

Canucks and Flames raise funds
(Sep 16) VANCOUVER (CP) - The Vancouver Canucks raised over $130,000 Cdn while the Calgary Flames collected over $25,000 for the American Red Cross disaster relief fund on Sunday during pre-season intrasquad scrimmages.

At Vancouver, in addition to donating ticket revenues from the 13,094 fans who attended the annual Blue-Silver game to the families of victims of Tuesday's terrorist attacks, the Canucks collected donations in the concourse, and Vancouver players chipped in another $3,170.

"It's wonderful. It's a great opportunity for people to help those who need the help," Canucks general manager Brian Burke said.

The total could grow once donations and parking revenue are added.

"It's a great response, but I'm not surprised," Burke said. "I think we have great fans."

At Calgary, team White beat team Black 3-1 as fans watched to raise money.

"Calgarians' response to the people affected by this disaster has been overwhelming," said Shirley Diaz, the Red Cross' regional director in southern Alberta. "We are touched by how members of the community like the Calgary Flames have come together in this tragic time to demonstrate their support in their own way."

Thank you to all the brave volunteers who brought us all together as a country,
and thank you to those of you brave soldiers who will fight and have fought for our country.
We are a free people because of your efforts.

There's a lot of great support coming from Canada. I saw a ceremony held in memory of the Twin Towers in Ottawa and there were literally thousands of people crying for their neighbors to the south. Literally, any shot of the crowd showed people as far as the eye could see.

And rehab for Theo ;)

I've always been proud of our neighbors to the North. I have many Canadian friends, both living here and in Canada and the support they have given to the US is overwhelming. I'm sure more NHL teams will contribute as well. I'm sure the LA Kings will, as they lost 2 of their own in one of the planes that crashed.

WooHoo Post # 400 :)

And the rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.
O say, does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

Gone, but not forgotten

The Islanders would donate money, but they are too busy giving an Above Average Player, the richest contract in NHL History.

Maybe when Hong Kong gets terrorized, Wang will dish out some cash.

Bring on the Hockey Season Boyz!!

I don't know if it is Canadians in general, but hockey players seem to be the athletes who give the most. While his on-ice performance was lacking recently, Adam Graves for example, was one who was constanly "doing the right thing".

I can't confirm it, but Eric Lindros supposedly went with Messier to ground zero to give support to the FDNY & NYPD. If this is so, I'll back off on the erica comments this year.

Does it REALLY matter how much anyone gives? I APPRECIATE whatever support (moral & spiritual) we can get - money, supplies, prayers - ALL ARE WELCOME.

It's the people who just sit on their hands that bother me. If you don't have money, volunteer - doesn't cost you anything except your time.

MLB, players union donate $10M to relief fund
Wednesday, September 19
USTA, NHL players also contribute

Associated Press

Major League Baseball and its players' association contributed $5 million each Wednesday to establish a relief fund to aid victims of last week's terrorist attacks.

The MLB-MLBPA Disaster Relief Fund will distribute money after consulting with governmental and charitable relief organizations.

Many baseball teams and players are making separate contributions.

"All of Major League Baseball is deeply saddened by the loss of life and the terrible damage wrought by the terrorist attacks that struck our nation," commissioner Bud Selig said.

"The events of Sept. 11 left all of us horrified, and none of us untouched," said Don Fehr, executive director of the union. "Baseball and America have always gone together, and now, as the country moves forward to relieve the suffering and heal the wounds, everyone in the baseball community wants to go along."

The New York Mets said manager Bobby Valentine, his coaching staff and the 34 players on the team's active roster would contribute their salaries from Friday's game against the Atlanta Braves to the New York Police & Fire Widows' and Children's Benefit Fund. The donation will be about $450,000.

Cincinnati players and coaches are donating $250,000 -- roughly the equivalent of one day's pay -- to the Heroes' Fund, established to help families of the New York firefighters, police officers and Port Authority employees killed in the attacks. Colorado players donated nearly $60,000, which, with matching funds, is expected to total about $144,000.

The NHL Players Association donated $500,000 to aid families of New York City firefighters and police officers.

"The members of the NHLPA wanted to make a donation to support the families of the victims of last week's terrorist attacks in New York City," NHLPA president Trevor Linden said. "This donation is in addition to the various contributions we are making with our teammates and our teams."

NASCAR is pledging its help through a variety of paint schemes and donations. A combined 37 Winston Cup and Busch series drivers informed NASCAR on Wednesday of special patriotic paint schemes they will have on their cars this weekend in Dover, Del.

In addition, 12 drivers have joined Rusty Wallace and Jeremy Mayfield's call to donate money for every lap they complete this weekend. The pledges range from $20 to $25 per lap.

The U.S. Tennis Association announced a $1 million donation to the World Trade Center relief effort.

"New York City is home to the U.S. Open," said Merv Heller, president of the USTA. "We have worked very closely with New York Police, Fire, EMS and other city agencies and over the years have seen their tireless efforts and dedication firsthand."

Wang donated money. He just didn't feel the need to send out press releases about it. And I doubt the organization would be "Busy" with a deal that was finalized weeks ago.

Wang is just as American as you or me. The guy is a Christian who came from a family that escaped Red China in the 50's when he was 5 years old. Although he was naturalized, he is a citizen and Computer Associates is an American-based company that pumps money into the American economy. Nice Analogy. He is from Shanghai. Whole different fucking animal than Hong Kong. Like calling a Scottish guy Irish.
