Its Playoff Time and here are the matchups.

NATIONAL LEAGUE DIVISION SERIES
ST. LOUIS CARDINALS VS. ARIZONA DIAMONDBACKS
The Cardinals may be spending the offseason kicking themselves after a missed oppurtunity of winning the National League Central. All they needed to do was win 2 out of 3 at home against Houston to win the Division, but they failed to do so Instead of Home Field throughout the playoffs and a matchup against a weaker and Javy Lopezless Braves team, The Cardinals are going on the road to face the Johnson-Schilling combo in Arizona. These are the two best teams in the National League and if a team in the NL is going to beat Arizona, it is going to be St. Louis. But I can't see that happening. Its been proven that the Cards can lose big games at home and even if Arizona drops a game at home, they can get it back in St. Louis. The Cards will put up a fight, but its nearly impossible to beat Arizona in a short series with Johnson and Schilling pitching.
PREDICTION: Diamondbacks in 4

NATIONAL LEAGUE DIVISION SERIES
ATLANTA BRAVES VS. HOUSTON ASTROS
The Braves have had the Astros number in the post season in the past, but this is a different Astros team, and its a different Braves team. The Braves probably would have entered the playoffs as the weakest team even with Javy Lopez. The absence of Lopez in their lineup is going to be crucial. If the Braves are going to pull this series out, they are going to need magnificent starts from their entire staff, especially Maddux and Glavine. Considering the First two games are in the hitter friendly Enron Field, and Maddux has a reputation for coming up short in the post season. Also throw in the fact that the Astros have some momentum after their weekend in St. Louis. The Astros should win this series.
PREDICTION: Astros in 4

AMERICAN LEAGUE DIVISION SERIES
OAKLAND A's VS. NEW YORK YANKEES
By far the best matchup in the First Round, and you may never see a better 1st Round matchup than this one. The A's have been amazing for the second half of the season, and the Yankees have a history of being nothing short than amazing come October. This is going to be a long series and can go either way. The Playoff experience that the A's got last year is going to be big for them as they will not be intimidated as much by the Yankees. Id love to take the A's here and if they had the Home Field here, I think this time they would pull out that Game 5 at home. The Yankees have not been playing their best baseball as of late, but they didn't do that last year either and they won the whole thing. Your probably looking at splits in both ball parks and then a Game 5 at Yankee Stadium, and the Home Field and the mystique has to go the Yankees way. But this one should be a classic series and every game should have you on the edge of your seat.
PREDICTION: Yankees in 5

AMERICAN LEAGUE DIVISION SERIES
CLEVELAND INDIANS VS. SEATTLE MARINERS
The one thing the Cleveland has going for them is that they have absolutely nothing to lose in this series. Nobody expects the Indians to win this thing considering they finished a whopping 25 games behind Seattle. The Indians can matchup with Seattle's hitting but they can't matchup to their pitching. Seattle won 116 games for a reason. because they are a great well balanced unit with not a weakness to be found. Indians may win a game in this series, anything more would be rather surprising.
PREDICTION: Mariners in 4

REST OF PLAYOFFS

NATIONAL LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES
Arizona over Houston in 6

AMERICAN LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES
Seattle over NY Yankees in 6

2001 WORLD SERIES
Arizona over Seattle in 7

2001 WORLD CHAMPIONS
Arizona Diamondbacks

NATIONAL LEAGUE DIVISION SERIES
ST. LOUIS CARDINALS VS. ARIZONA DIAMONDBACKS

Arizona pitching and defense will overcome the cardinal rather young staff.

Arizona in 4

NATIONAL LEAGUE DIVISION SERIES
ATLANTA BRAVES VS. HOUSTON ASTROS

Atlanta looks pretty weak and tired the astros seem fresher and their offense is amazing this year as is their defense. Their only weak spot may be their pitching, Atlanta has the better pitching staff. But atlanta is usually a different team in the post season so..

Houston in 5

AMERICAN LEAGUE DIVISION SERIES
OAKLAND A's VS. NEW YORK YANKEES

The yanks have been the team to beat the last 6 years and Oaklands post season hopes have always been crushed eraly.

Yanks in 4

AMERICAN LEAGUE DIVISION SERIES
CLEVELAND INDIANS VS. SEATTLE MARINERS

No match up at all

Seattle in 3

As far as the rest of the post season.

REST OF PLAYOFFS

NATIONAL LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES

AMERICAN LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES
Seattle over NY Yankees in 7

Here we go... if the playoffs are a third as interesting and historic as the regular season, we're all in for a treat.

ST. LOUIS CARDINALS VS. ARIZONA DIAMONDBACKS
As much as I respect LaRussa, he would seem to be overmatched in a short series. However, this is my upset pick. Arizona doesn't have the offensive firepower they need, and the Cards' starters are only a few notches below the K Brothers. ST. LOUIS in FIVE.

ATLANTA BRAVES VS. HOUSTON ASTROS
This is the weakest of the 10 Braves champion teams. The Astros always fold in the playoffs, and their starters are VERY young (if talented). Something's gotta give, it'll be Atlanta. HOUSTON in FOUR, winning their first ever playoff series.

NL CHAMPIONSHIP: I can't pick Houston to go to the Series, so I say La Russa will win the rematch and take the Cardinals to the promised land, where they will be swept by the AL champ. ST. LOUIS in SIX.

***********

OAKLAND A's VS. NEW YORK YANKEES
Of course I'm picking the A's, not only am I rooting for them but they've been the best team in baseball since the break. Last 5 weeks: they won 7 out of every 8 games. Last 4 months: they won 3 out of every 4. These A's are a very streaky team; this series will depend on whether the hot streak continues, or if the two days off kills their buzz, so to speak. ATHLETICS in FOUR.

CLEVELAND INDIANS VS. SEATTLE MARINERS
How I'd love to see Cleveland pull it out, but Seattle will be ready for them. Piniella took another wire-to-wire first-place team all the way to a WS sweep in 1990 (to my dismay). SEATTLE in FOUR.

AL CHAMPIONSHIP: The season series is virtually even. I say, if the A's stay hot enough to beat the Yankees, they can beat the Mariners. OAKLAND in SEVEN.

WORLD SERIES: The last time the World Series was delayed, it was 1989 in San Francisco. (I was just getting on a bus to come home from school when the earthquake hit.) The Series was delayed for a week, leading to jokey speculation over who the first Mr. November would be. Well, the A's completed an easy sweep of the Giants, and before the end of October.
Looking at the schedule this year, with Game 4 on October 31, I can't help but root for history to repeat itself.
OAKLAND over ST. LOUIS (or whoever) in FOUR.

National League Division Series:
Houston Astros vs. Atlanta Braves
The Astros are coming off of a huge win against the Cardinals to give them a matchup, and home field advantage, with the Braves. The Braves have just won their 10th straight division title, which has never been done before. A few weeks ago, i wouldve said Astros in 3, or 4 easily. Now, its going to be interesting. Brian Jordan has proven to get the big hit at the right time, and the Braves still have Maddux and Glavine. That being said, i think being at Enron field and having a better overall team than the Braves will let the Astros win this one.

Prediction: Astros in 3.

NL Division Series:
St Louis Cardinals vs. Arizona Diamondbacks
This could be the closest of all the divisional series. I know Arizona has Randy Johnson and Curt Schilling, but St Louis isnt that bad either. Matt Morris is worthy of a Cy Young award this year, and Darryl Kile isnt that bad of a #2 either. Plus, i believe that the Cards have a better offense than the DBacks do. Here is my upset pick.

Prediction: Cardinals in 4.

American League Divisional Series:
New York Yankees vs Oakland A's
As a loyal member of the Crack Committee, i am rooting very hardly for the A's. To their credit, the Yankees are going for another World Series, and do have a pretty tough team. Clemens has 20 wins, and Mussina and Pettite are great playoff pitchers too. The A's have been the hottest team since the middle of May, even hotter than the Mariners. The acquisition of Jermaine Dye might have been the last piece to the championship puzzle. Here is my prediction.

Prediction: A's in 4.

AL Division Series:
Seattle Mariners vs Cleveland Indians
Same old story for the Indians, great offense, no pitching. They have 1 decent pitcher, and he is an unexperienced rookie, C.C. Sabathia. He has some good stuff, but the playoffs are a whole different ballgame. Sure they have Juan Gonzalez and Jim Thome, but the Mariners are the Mariners. They have pitching, they have a bullpen, and they have enough offense to take advantage of the Indians pitching, especially their bullpen.

Prediction: Mariners in 3.

AL Championship Series: A's vs Mariners
Will be a classic matchup. Should be the World Series matchup, because these are the two best teams in baseball. I believe this will be a back and forth series, with neither team really getting a huge advantage.

Prediction: A's in 7.

NL Championship Series:
Cardinals vs Astros
Unfortunately the NL is pretty weak this year. It is balanced, but it is weak in that there are no Oakland A's or Seattle Mariners. This should be a great matchup as well though, which could come down to the bullpen. I think that the Astros will walk away from this as the NL champions, they certainly have the talent.

Prediction: Astros in 7.

World Series:
Houston Astros vs. Oakland A's
This is where the ride ends for Houston. Both teams should be pretty worn down from their last 2 series. I honestly think that these playoffs will be very grueling and close. Talent for talent, these 2 teams are awesome. The A's probably have a better starting staff, but the Astros have the better bullpen. Izzy isnt as bad as people think though, he gets the job done, ala John Wetteland. Anyway, when it is all said and done, i think that the A's will take this one.

Prediction: A's in 6.

Here are my short but sweet predictions:

Diamondbacks over the Cardinals in 5.

Braves over Astros in 4 because the Astros have just sucked lately.

A's over the yankees in 5. I just really hate the Yankees and the A's have dominated them this year.

Mariners over Indians in 4.

NL Championship:
Braves over Diamond backs in 7.

AL Championship:
Mariners over A's in 6.

World Series:
Mariners over Braves in 4. The Mariners have just been too good this year.

Diamondbacks/Cardinals - Facing Schilling twice and Johnson possibly twice is tough for any team. The pitching coupled with some timely hitting from Grace and Gonzalez give the Dbacks the win here. Dbacks in 4.

Astros/Braves - Dave Mlicki facing Tom Glavine in Game 2. What? How weak is that. Despite that, the Braves aren't that great this year and the Astros have the much better offense and bullpen. Astros in 4.

Mariners/Indians - Bartolo Colon. C.C. Sabathia. Chuck Finley. Do you have faith in any of these guys right now if you are a Cleveland fan? Next. Mariners in 3.

A's/Yankees - the short series here hurts the Yanks more than the A's. The A's would have beat them last year easy if they had time to reorder their rotation to give them Hudson and Zito twice. This year they had time to do whatever the fuck they wanted. Couple that with some health concerns from the Yankees such as El Duque's 40 year old body falling apart and the A's should win this. Clemens wins Game 1 but it's downhill from there. Mussina loses Game 3 by a score of like 2-1 or 1-0 to keep the pattern going from the regular season. A's in 4.

Dbacks/Astros - Pretty weak crop in the NL this year. Astros use home field to their advantage and rack Schilling or Johnson at least once. Astros in 6.

A's/Mariners - I GUARANTEE that the Mariners don't make it out of the AL regardless of who they face here. No way it's happening. A's in 5.

A's/Astros - No contest here and the ratings will be abysmal. A's in 5.

I was on the Oakland bandwagon in spring training, then I jumped off, then I jumped back on at the AS-break, so I guess I'll stay on now...

Oakland over Yanks in 5
Seattle over Cleveland in 3

Houston over Atlanta in 4
Arizona over St. Louis in 4

Oakland over Seattle in 6
Arizona over Houston in 6

Oakland over Arizona in 6

You know what's funny, if the Yanks stay in it, there's a chance Joe Torre's contract will expire before the World Series is over. Bizarre.

2001 NATIONAL LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES

ATLANTA BRAVES VS. ARIZONA DIAMONDBACKS
This should be a very interesting and competitive series with a heavy emphasis on Pitching and not much on offense. Dont expect too many high scoring games in this series. The question about the Braves is were they that good in their series, or was Houston just that bad? I go with the latter. The Astros are dogs come playoff time and just dont belong playing Baseball in October. The Diamondbacks beat a very tough Cardinals team and now are ready for their First Trip to the NLCS. To win the series, Arizona must have Randy Johnson turn around his playoff misfortunes and become the dominant force he has been throughout his career. It is imperative for the D-Backs to take the First Game. Curt Schilling proved in the Cardinals series that he is probably the most reliable pitcher in Baseball today. This series can go either way and expect tight low scoring games for the majority of the series. I have to give the slight edge to Arizona for the Home Field and the Johnson-Schilling factor. A Few weeks ago, I probably would have picked Arizona in a romp, now Im picking Arizona to just get by and be tested.
PREDICTION: Diamondbacks in 6

AMERICAN LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES

NEW YORK YANKEES VS. SEATTLE MARINERS
What else can you say about the Yankees. The team is just unbelievable. No matter what the situation may be, and how down they may seem, They always come out on top. This should be a classic series, but how can you go against the Yankees. I originally liked Seattle in this series to finally knock off the Yankees, but after seeing the Yankees comeback over the A's, and seeing the Mariners barely get by the Indians, I have to swing towards the Yankees to get it done again. I do give the Mariners a chance to win this series and will be pulling for them, but they better play a better series against the Yankees than they did against Cleveland. The reason why the Yankees will probably win this series is the Starting Pitching. Seattle's Starters are nowhere near as good as Oakland's and can not compete with Mussina,Clemens, Pettite, and Hernandez. The Yankees will get a game in Seattle, take 2 out of 3 at the Stadium and will manage to get a game in Seattle to win the series.
PREDICTION: Yankees in 6

REST OF PLAYOFFS
Before the season started, I picked Arizona-Yankees in the World Series and Arizona winning in 7. So I am going to stay with that prediction, even though The Yankees will probably win.

It's not a prediction, but I figured this belonged here as much as anywhere else.

So Far, there have been some pretty fucking good baseball in these playoffs. 3 out of 4 series went the distance, and in all of those games five the loser had a chance in the 9th. Yankees made record comeback after losing first 2, Mariners rebounded from that 17-2 shellacking.

On paper, both series should continue that trend.

Voting with my heart and not my head,
Diamondbacks in 7, Mariners in 7.
(and of course, Rangers in 7 :) )
