NEW YORK – The New York Rangers, looking to replace injured goalie Mike Richter, claimed Guy Hebert off waivers Wednesday from the Anaheim Mighty Ducks.

Hebert, a 34-year-old native of Troy, N.Y., became expendable in Anaheim because of the emergence of Jean-Sebastien Giguere and the acquisition of Steve Shields on Monday in the trade that sent leading-scorer Teemu Selanne to San Jose.

Hebert, the Mighty Ducks' career victories leader with 173, lost the top job this season to Giguere, who has made 10 consecutive starts.

The Rangers, the only NHL team without a shutout this season, are 1-6 since Richter sustained a season-ending knee injury in a victory over Chicago on Feb. 19.

The tandem of veteran Kirk McLean and rookie Vitali Yeremeyev allowed 24 goals in those seven games as the Rangers have fallen out of the Eastern Conference playoff race for the fourth straight season.

New York general manager Glen Sather was known to covet restricted free agent Nikolai Khabibulin, but his efforts to acquire the Russian goalie -- out of the NHL since 1997 -- were thwarted when the Phoenix Coyotes traded him Monday to Tampa Bay.

Hebert, who also earned 13 victories and a shutout for St. Louis before joining the expansion Ducks in 1993, is 12-23-4 with two shutouts this season in 41 games.

He holds most of Anaheim's goalie records. Besides victories, Hebert also leads with 441 games played and 27 shutouts.

Hebert was also a backup to Richter on the 1992 U.S. Olympic team at the Nagano Games. He did not play for the medal-less Americans in the first Olympics to feature NHL players.

Richter, who had reconstructive surgery on his left knee last April, will have a similar operation on his right knee Friday. Richter injured both knees on nearly identical moves.

During the skills competition at the 2000 All-Star game, Richter moved left and tore the anterior cruciate ligament, trying to stop New York Islanders forward Mariusz Czerkawski during a breakaway drill.

Against Chicago last month, the 34-year-old Richter slammed his right knee into the goal post, tearing his other ACL, reacting to a shot wide of the net.

Rangers Acquire Left Wing Ryan Tobler from Nashville
3/7/2001
New York Rangers President and General Manager Glen Sather announced today that the club has acquired left wing Ryan Tobler from the Nashville Predators in exchange for defenseman Bert Robertsson.

The 6-3, 222-pounder has spent the last two seasons with the Milwaukee Admirals of the International Hockey League (IHL), registering seven goals and nine assists for 16 points, along with 196 penalty minutes in 49 matches this season. Last season, he ranked first on the Admirals and third in the IHL with 293 penalty minutes, while also ranking third on the team with 47 points (19 goals and 28 assists). Tobler (TOHB-lur), 24, was originally signed by Nashville as a free agent on May 1, 2000.

Robertsson appeared in two matches with New York after being acquired from the Columbus Blue Jackets on November 9, 2000 in exchange for Jean-Francois Labbe. He also spent 27 games with the Hartford Wolf Pack of the American Hockey League (AHL), tallying seven goals and five assists, along with 27 penalty minutes and a plus-10 rating.

Hey he's not breathing. Don't people usually breathe?

OMG! Like this is going to help their cause! The Rangers need to do some serious searching for the right players!

Look at the Devils! What a balanced attack they have, year in and year out! Close to the top in scoring. One of the better defenses in the league.

And, in this dog's opinion, the best goalie in the league!

That is the epitomy of a TEAM!

dog, you're absolutely right. and what's the rangers strategy now? first they went w/ the oilers (ex: mess, low, slats), then the czechs (nedved, hlavac, dvorak), and now the americans (leetch, hebert). who's next, ron wilson as an assistant coach?

The rangers need to get rid of some of these guys and pickup some more young players and take some risks stop being such big pussys.

Getting Hebert makes no sense. Hes old and hes a 2nd rate goaltender anyway. He is no better than Kirk Mclean. just end the season with McLean and Yeremeyev. and you see if Richter can make it back next year or you go out and get a #1 Goalie.
Dont make a move for the sake of making a move and I hope that Glen Sather didnt make this move thinking we can make a Playoff Run. Because the Rangers are 12 points behind 2 teams and they are not going to get more than 10 points the rest of the year. Their remaining 16 games. They will be lucky to win 5 of them.
