Cowboys say they're close to signing Leaf

October 12, 2001

IRVING, Texas (AP) -- Quarterback Ryan Leaf is expected to sign with winless Dallas as early as Friday and the Cowboys said he could be in uniform for Monday night's game with the Washington Redskins.

Leaf worked out Thursday for team officials. Last month, a tendon injury in his right wrist caused him to fail his physical and prevented him from signing with Dallas.

``We had him throw today and we felt real good about what we saw,'' Cowboys coach Dave Campo said. ``So there is a possibility that we could have a third quarterback for Monday night.''

Rookie starting quarterback Quincy Carter is out 4-to-6 weeks after tearing his left hamstring Sunday at Oakland. Anthony Wright is the starter Monday, backed up by Clint Stoerner.

``We think he has a chance to revive his career here in Dallas,'' Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said of Leaf. ``We are at a juncture in this franchise that we should pursue every avenue to establish quarterbacking for the future.''

Leaf, the second overall pick in the 1998 draft, was about to join his third team in six months before failing the physical with the Cowboys in September. He had been released in the preseason after a brief stay with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Leaf was released after three disappointing seasons with the San Diego Chargers and agreed to take a pay cut with the Bucs, who claimed him off waivers March 2.

He will likely receive a two-year contract with the Cowboys with the fourth-year veteran minimum of $418,000 and no signing bonus this season, the team said.
