This is really the success story of 2001. She was close to winning the Grand Slam, and just considering where she was (she was ranked as low as #267 in 1998), it just makes #1 so much sweeter. She overtook Martina Hingis, who was pretty impressive herself staying in the #1 spot for 208 weeks total.

well, she certainly deserved it, i still think by now veus williams should be #1, shes won so many grand slams lately, but good for jen-jen what an up-hill climb she over took

Well if that was true then she wouldn't have been ranked 8 to end last year. Just because someone never won a tournament doesn't make them awful or even mediocre. She was as high as 7 before injuries took a toll. Once she's healed she will get up there again.

Well no player gets as much unneeded scrutiny than Anna. I'm just used to defending her nonstop to various ignorant people.
