M.L.S Wraps Up Its Sixth Season
By ALEX YANNIS

n Major League Soccer's sixth season, attendance was up by 9 percent, the caliber of play was higher and the number of young American players continued to grow. But the league still lacked soccer-only stadiums like the one in Columbus, Ohio, where M.L.S. Cup was played Sunday.
There has been a lot of talk about new stadiums, but not a shovel has been lifted since Columbus Crew Stadium was built two years ago by LAMAR HUNT, the team's owner- operator.
Commissioner DON GARBER sounded as optimistic as ever during the weekend at the league's championship match, won by the San Jose Earthquakes, 2-1, in overtime over the Los Angeles Galaxy. Garber said the Galaxy was expected to break ground on a stadium next month and the Dallas Burn was not far behind.
``Los Angeles is a reality,'' Garber said, referring to a stadium for the Galaxy that will also play host to the United States national teams. ``It will be a stadium that will be measured against the best in the world.
``Los Angeles should be done for the 2003 season, and we have reached the point of having a commitment from the McKinney community outside Dallas for a house for the Burn.''
The MetroStars, meanwhile, have focused their attention on Hudson County in New Jersey and they are working toward building a stadium in Harrison, N.J.
Garber said the league's owners had enough money to operate for at least the next five years. M.L.S. will not expand in 2003 as previously planned. ``This is not the appropriate economic climate,'' he said.
The league's announcement of a five-year television package with ESPN and ABC, expected yesterday, will now come later this week.
The league handed out its annual awards for its top executives over the weekend in conjunction with M.L.S. Cup. JIM SMITH of Columbus was named executive of the year. STEVE PASTORINO of Chicago won for marketing, CHRIS BRIENZA of the MetroStars for public relations and ED AUSTIN of Tampa Bay for operations.
