EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J., Oct. 28 — The men's and women's professional soccer teams from the New York area and Washington got together for a doubleheader at Giants Stadium this evening that meant a great deal more than soccer. The Power and the MetroStars, and the Freedom and D.C. United played to raise money for the victims and families of last month's terrorist attacks.

"New York and Washington are our communities," said the Freedom's Mia Hamm, who scored the first goal in the women's game, in which the Power edged the Freedom, 3-2. "This is the least we can do to help the victims and families of victims."

The men played to a 2-2 tie. Rodrigo Faria and Miles Joseph scored for the MetroStars, while Chris Albright and Carlos Llamosa scored for United.

All the men and women who participated got together for a photograph between games. This doubleheader and the one next Saturday in Washington are called the Unity Games.

"The wonderful thing about this is that it has unified everyone," Hamm said. "People have been finding ways to donate money and this is our way of contributing."

Hamm is one of the best-known players in the Women's United Soccer Association, which has completed its first year. She was visited by members of several families of victims before the game in the dressing room.

Members of the New York City Police and Fire Departments were honored between the games and cheered loudly by the crowd of 29,417. The proceeds will go to the relief and recovery effort from the attacks.

Tiffeny Milbrett, the most valuable player and leading scorer in the W.U.S.A., led the Power with two goals. The first was a blast from the center circle and came only seconds after Hamm had given the Freedom the lead.

"Considering what people went through since Sept. 11, it makes you feel you want to do so much and this is the least we can do," Milbrett said.

Emily Janss scored the winning goal, and Roseli of Brazil scored the other goal for the Freedom. Power Coach Pat Farmer said the game was important to the women because they knew they were under evaluation for jobs next season. That was why the women did not have guest players, as the men did.

Among the guests for the MetroStars were Tony Meola of Kansas City, and Diego Serna and Alex Pineda Chacon of Miami.

"It's hard to describe what it means to play in a game like this," said Meola, who took a photograph with about 20 police officers lined up inside one of the goals.
