LUXEMBOURG (AP) — Anna Kournikova ended a five-match losing streak Tuesday, beating Jana Kandar of Germany 6-2, 7-5 in the first round of the $170,000 SEAT Open.
This was the Russian's first victory since coming back last month from a stress fracture of her left foot. The injury has sidelined her most of the season and her ranking has dropped to No. 22.

Kournikova, seeded fifth, next plays Daniela Hantuchova, a promising Slovak who defeated German qualifier Andrea Glass 6-4, 6-4.

Jennifer Capriati, last year's winner and the new No. 1, is not playing. Kim Clijsters of Belgium is favored to recapture the title she took in 1999.

Seventh-seeded Anne Kremer of Luxembourg lost 6-3, 6-3 to Meilen Tu, and eighth-seeded Francesca Schiavone of Italy fell 7-6 (4), 6-2 to Lubomira Bacheva of Bulgaria.

Lisa Raymond, seeded sixth, defeated Spain's Marta Marrero 6-2, 2-6, 6-4. Raymond won the doubles title at Wimbledon and the U.S. Open this year with Rennae Stubbs.

Raymond will face another Spanish teen-ager in the second round, Anabel Medina Garrigues. She beat Argentine qualifier Maria Emilia Salerni 7-6 (6), 6-2.

Also, Jennifer Hopkins downed wild card Virginie Razzano of France 6-2, 4-6, 6-4, and Cara Black of Zimbabwe stopped Elena Bovina of Russia 6-4, 6-0.

Anna lost today against Kim Clijsters in 2 sets. Pretty close sets though and Kim is in the Top 5 so not too bad for Anna. And yes, I realize I'm probably the only one who actually follows her tennis but oh well. Women's tennis is still better than the NBA.

you've got a point there, my advice to anna would be drop the tennis, go to full-time playboy :) she's already makin millions
