ESPN signs deal to broadcast games for another five years.
By Gary Davidson
SoccerTimes
COLUMBUS, Ohio (Saturday, October 20, 2001) -- Major League Soccer and ESPN have entered into an agreement for the Disney-owned network to broadcast the league's games for the next five years.

"The league will be on TV for the next five years," MLS commissioner told a roundtable discussion with the Professional Soccer Reporters Association this afternoon.

ESPN, ESPN2 and ABC, all part of Disney, have broadcast MLS games since the league was born in 1996. The current contract expires tomorrow after MLS Cup 2001 between the Los Angeles Galaxy and San Jose Earthquakes. ABC has aired all six MLS championship games.

Garber said an arrangement to have future games on ABC had not yet been nailed down, but the two side were coming closer to an agreement.

A formal announcement will be made Monday.

The commissioner also said that the new television deal was a sign of stability, a good indication that MLS was secure for the next five years.

Garber also said that MLS viewed expansion has an important component on MLS's future, but 2004 would be the earliest new teams would be added to the 12 existing clubs. "We will not be expanding in 2003," he said. "We believe we need to expand our national footprint, but do not believe this is the appropriate time."

They should get Marv Albert or someone to do MLS play-by-play to give it a ratings boost. Or say someone sent a suspicious letter to them, and watch the ratings go through the roof!
